Well, they showed us that picture, and that’s pretty much the extent of the explanation they gave all the other classes. I guess we’ll never know. Be sure not to read tomorrow’s blog post or friday’s livestream, they definitely won’t explain things further there.

Do you think people can’t rob you if they have a staff? Large sticks have been a favored weapon of bandits and muggers for thousands of years.

Gotta go with the times why would a their that has a pistol on them intentionally throw it away and rob someone with a stick?? Are they stupid??

Google is failing me, but I remember back when they first announced the Thief profession in 2011 they commented that it was more than a sneaky backstab rogue. That they wanted to roll in all the archetypes — acrobats, conmen, swashbucklers, etc. I relied on that in designing the RP persona of my dashing ladies man conman nobleman master of disguise, who much prefers being in the limelight in whatever role he’s taken on (literally, he’s been in theater) to effacing himself in the dark.

I am psyched for him to learn stick fighting. He’s never ICly liked guns, as he prefers not to take lives without great need and he can control the damage blades do far more easily than tossing bullets through people, assuming he has to fight at all instead of charming his way out of the situation.

idk about you guys but im super excited for staff as a melee weapon. personally i see thief as a mostly in your face close quarter fighter and only uses range when necessary.

… Why would the thief use a dagger over a pistol? Why would a warrior use a greatsword or hammer rather than a rifle?

Why do we even have magic? It’s a lot faster to just pull a trigger than speak an incantation to throw a fireball. Let’s just remove all fantasy elements from the game and turn it into Call of Duty: Tyria!

I’m sorry sir, but it seems your suspension of disbelief is broken. Maybe you should consider avoiding fantasy games from now on.

To JUN YANG: Thief = someone who steals from someone else. Mugger = someone who steals from someone else. I really can’t make this any easier for you. Hit the guy over the head with your staff when he’s not looking then STEAL his money before he wakes up. Thief with staff is perfectly thematic.

There is a whole topic about this allready.

First of all, who has said that it’s an Assasin? Most say that the specialization name is “Daredevil”, now that doesn’t say much but I would just say it could be a Martial Artist and Bo is a Martial Arts weapon, I would be suprised if this specialization would be centered around Stealth. I think this Specialization is more about fast hitting mobile knockback, stun and raw damage up front. As I have said in other posts Thief is the best class suited for this Specialization.

Then you say Assasins do not use Bo, well tell me an Assasin who would wield a Rifle, Greatsword, Hammer, Shield, Warhorn and Torch. I can actually see a Mythical Shinobi use Scepter and Focus. But hey, nothing is impossible in Fantasies.

Well, you forgot the stealth, and I don’t think one can shoot with a gun or throw fireballs for some time, when they had been smacked on the head with a pole-arm…

But I’m hoping for “Pole-vault” type of skill, kick most preferably, dunno if there’s gonna be other skills that works like extended jump tho.

Thief is not an assassin. Thief is a rogue.

Some rogues are assassins, some are skilled gunslingers, some are mobile and evasive brawlers, some are brutes that favor dirty fighting.

Elite specs are about adding specificity to an archetype, not pigeonholing the archetype in to a single role. They’ve also said they’d like to eventually add every weapon to every class with elite specs, giving many more build and style choices to all professions.

Expect to one day in the far future to see rifle elementalists, scepter thieves, dagger engineers, focus warriors, and pistol guardians despite how “off theme” those choices might be. Elite specs are supposed to be “off theme” as they represent a shift away from the base class in to something else.

They explained as much when they game was released.

Thief has two ranged and two melee MH weapons. One of the ranged MH weapons is a 2H weapon. There is no melee 2H weapon on thief. Rifle would have been stupid, too many ranged weapons and 2 of them cannot even be used with an Offhand.

^ Same as your logic. Only, yknow, that both current melees are 1H.

So?

This is the same company that gave great swords to mesmers and necros. Giving thieves the staff seems totally reasonable compared to weapon choices for other classes.

Little John - Legendary outlaw/brigand/thief (depending on you point of view). Fought with a staff.

Robin Hood also used a staff in some stories. Both are considered thieves by certain people (namely the people they were robbing).

2 “ranged” weapons. Short bow is mid-range utility weapon and pistols are mid-range “dps” while dagger and sword are real hard hitting melee weapons. But whatever. Melee thief hype.

I think this is pretty much it. From the datamined utility skills, the ‘Daredevil’ is pretty much ArenaNet’s response to the demand for a “monk” type character (the martial artist monk, not the GW1 monk). Using a staff is a way to get around the mechanical problems of using no weapon at all when a lot of stats are based on your weapon (especially in PvE) while using one of the few weapons that are associated with the archetype.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Ninjas are NO assassins: ninjas are infiltrators, information gatherers. Primarily used to get in, grab/learn what you need and get out, all while remaining undetected.

They were also trained in combat, but killing someone was their ABSOLUTE last resort if there were no other options left. They would often use martial arts (the physical skills the thief is getting in the Spec) or non-lethal weapons to just incapacitate enemies instead of killing them.

They are more like acrobats than killers, and a staff providing utility skills like the Dust Sweep that was datamined fits perfectly for this theme. The rapid flurry of fist attacks that was datamined in the physical skills could be a refference to rapidly hitting enemies in their pressure points to incapacitate them.
