It seems that not all elder dragons have the same M.O. Some corrupt living beings, others create their own from the materials around them. It seems to be possible (and I’m stretching a little here) that there may be two different types of Elder dragon. Creators, and corruptors.

Primordus, Mordremoth and (unsubstatiated) Bubbles may be creators.
Primordus’ minions are MADE of rock and lava, and given life. Mordemoth grows his minions from plants. Bubbles has no information here.

Kralkatorrik, Zhaitan and Jormag act more like corruptors.
Branded were once living areas. Areas once full of life are now swallowed by the ice. and zhaitan’s undead clearly corrupted Orr.

All of them clearly are involved with the acquisition of territory.

A Zephyrite NPC was explaining to some children (when the Sanctum was still around) that the dragons are very much like the tides. They’re disinterested in the people they displace and destroy as they search for magical sustenance. Given the terrifying level of their power, this gives them an almost Lovecraftian quality.

At the same time, we know from the PS that Zhaitan at least was aware of the Pact rising against him, and moved to destroy it. So at times they do take an interest in the races of Tyria, if self-preservation becomes a factor.

I’m not completely clear on Mordemoth, however. Didn’t That Shaman post a datamined pic of a corrupted wolf/hound of some sort?

GuildMag (Thalador): Similarly in the Volcanic Fractal, it presents us an interesting setting: an abandoned mine, human captives, lava-infused with mystic powers, with bats and a crazed shaman turning into something a bit destroyer-like. Could it be a hint that Primordus can actually corrupt living beings since so far we’ve only been told that he can twist fire and stone.

ArenaNet (Jeff Grubb) : We’ve shown that from the early Eye of the North, and when we designed the Elder Dragons we were looking at them having specialties where they could corrupt more than just one type of substance. Some of them could affect life, some of them could affect inanimate objects, some of them could affect the elements, vegetation, water, you know they all had their some specialty but they also have some overlap and I believe Primordus, ‘cause we had the troll, the Destroyer Trolls who basically were very molten but also very humanoid as well. So I do believe that Primordus can affect the living.

ArenaNet (Ree Soesbee) : But probably not easily.

ArenaNet (Jeff Grubb) : But not with the same animating force you see from Zhaitan, reanimating the dead of Orr.

ArenaNet (Ree Soesbee) : I think that it’s, perspective wise, it’s more like the troll or the grawl has a layer of rock over them. They turn a little bit elemental in –

ArenaNet (Jeff Grubb and Scott McGough) : Sort of like Jormag and the Sons of Svanir

ArenaNet (Scott McGough) : The icier the Sons of Svanir, the more corrupted they are. I would say that Primordus can-

ArenaNet (Ree Soesbee) : The rockier they are…

ArenaNet (Scott McGough) : Yeah.

ArenaNet (Jeff Grubb) : There are rules for the Elder Dragons but they’re not the same rules for every Elder Dragon.

ArenaNet (Ree Soesbee) : It’s kind of like he’s converting those living creatures into stone.

Primordus can indeed corrupt living beings.

Similarly, Jormag and Kralkatorrik create minions out of the landscape too (Dragonspawn and Claw of Jormag seems to be made out of ice and bone and mist; The Shatterer and the GoA crystal giant seems made out of the Dragonbrand itself).

@Tanith: That’s just the Tyrian view of the Elder Dragons – that they’re forces of nature, mindless and uncaring in their destruction. Doesn’t make it true – in fact, given what we’ve seen stated and shown through the dragon minions’ actions and words, the Elder Dragons are actively working to rule Tyria. Especially with Edge of Destiny showing us the thought processes of Kralkatorrik – which can be dumbed down to “wants to obtain everything, and anything he cannot obtain he will destroy.”

And for a “corrupted wolf/hound” – the only thing I recall datamined is an alternative Fern Hound model which is more blue-green rather than yellow-green.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

That hound model actually is in the game, but it has nothing to do with dragon corruption.

If I see a line of ants trying to raid my pantry, I move to destroy it as well, and possibly their nest. That doesn’t mean that I regard ants as an actual enemy. Just an inconvenience.

There are overgrown wolves in the new living story. Along with overgrown husks. “Overgrown” might signify minion status, in the same way as “Branded” and “Risen”.

Yeah we really don’t know how Mordy corrupts, other than his numerous tentacles. The speculation up until now was that he’s some sort of plant ED, which likely leads to him being a plant-corrupting sort.
As for the types of minions the EDs have, yeah they can have all sorts but have a clear preference.
Although if one looks at it pragmatically they could also just use what’s available. In the case of zhaitan he had all those dead bodies lying around, so why would be conjure something up when he could just reanimate? Primordus was underground so there was a lot of rocks and lava around for him to use.
