I know this sounds like a stupid question, but this evening I argued for 1 hour and an half with my guildmates about flying boxes… Let me explain you. Some weeks ago me and a guildmate of mine started to build a jumping puzzle to reach the top of Gilded Hollow. At a certain point I left the game and the following morning I found a lot of flying boxes in the last part of the JP. I removed them, because boxes can’t fly, and then I built a new path adjacent to a rock wall.

Then this evening the topic was touched again. My guildmates think that GW2 is a fantasy game so anything can happen. For example in their opinion those boxes could be full of magical stuff or Maguma’s magnetic rock, ecc. I think that that’s not true neither possible, because I’ve bought that boxes from a vendor and I know that they are not magical, so they can’t fly.

What do you think about this?

Another point is what magic is in this game. I see GW2 magic as an extension of science (and Asura’s approach to it confirms this), something more like alchemy, so everything have to be extremly contextualized (also flying boxes, that for this reason cannot exist).

I think anything can be made to levitate in tyria with enuff magic skill.(or even naturally as seen in GW1/GW2 tarnished coast!)

Interestingly enough, anything can be kept afloat in the air through diamagnetic levitation (a google search for this term or its “advocate”, a certain A.Geim will lead to videos of floating frogs). Problem is, most experimental setups for it require superconductivity, which is hard to maintain at high temperature, and naturally it is much harder to keep things flying around as they get heavier.
For all we know, the Asura can keep some pretty bulky stuff floating around, and if you are into hard sci-fi, you might justify it by going with “well, these guys are masters of superconductivity! In fact, even these harmless boxes are built with awesome floating metamaterials!”.

Needless to say, most of the magic here is very hard to give proper context to – but I also enjoy thinking it’s just some pretty amazing natural effects the Tyrians discard as “magic” because they cant rationalize it.

Wait, is this an actual debate over the decoration tool in guild halls and stuff ‘floating’ because whatever was under it was removed? <_<.

The asura can levitate an entire city, I don’t think a few boxes are a problem.

In the Wintersday jp the snowflakes fly too!
(and those are snowflakes big enough to stand on them)

I have 1 jp with pumpkins that goes all long rocks around the whole GH
And then i have this jp with flying snowpiles that just leads to the ceiling of the map

I think you should just do itit offers just sooooo much more room for the jp if you use the air (see my pictures)

unfortunately i hit the 1000 decorations limit while building this “stairway to heaven” … had to remove as many pumpkins as i could to finish it …
i really really hope Anet increases the number of decorations that can be placed in the GH to 2000 if that is possible

Well, if you really want to get in to it.

Guild hall decorations aren’t exactly considered canon.

The plot recognizes guilds and guild halls, but the specifics of your decorations will never factor in to the plot or lore of the world.

It’s just aesthetic preference really. If you think floating boxes look dumb, don’t use them!

Rata Sum is a giant stone cube which is balanced on one point (which is floating in water). And the Council Chamber section at the top is floating above the main city.

If that can happen then it wouldn’t surprise me if anything in Tyria can be made to float. There are numerous other objects including rocks (outside Beetletun Manor) and crystals which float.

So it’s hardly surprising that a box can float.

Rata Sum is pretty much built from huge floating cubes. There’s that floating castle on the south cost of Kessex hills. And some rocks in Maguma float. And there was Scarlet’s big drill. And the Zephrite ships.

So I’d say yes, stuff floats in Tyria, stuff floats a lot.
