In Game of Thrones, there’s a very large character named the Mountain. He is painted as a villain and people are intimidated by his size. He’s very physically powerful and near unstoppable.

In World of Warcraft, there’s a very large character named Garrosh Hellscream. He is also a villain and towers over everyone (though they never acknowledge his size, really). He’s also very physically powerful.

In both of these universes, these characters are exceptionally large. No other characters in their universes (save mythical races that are meant to be large) are the same size as them. They are fearsome, influential, and renowned.

I recently had a thought that such a character might be interesting in GW2, but for all I know something similar exists.

Does GW2 have any characters that are physically unique from the rest of their race? Characters that stand out from the pack by their appearance?

The racial leaders are a bit taller than average for their race, but none as tall (or muscular) as Garrosh. Also, boss-fight characters were taller in WoW than they were in WC3, but that’s because Blizz wanted them to be easy to see during the fights. I personally didn’t play past MoP though, so if all of the major orcs are super-huge now, I can’t defend that. lol

Maybe you also remember they were all parodies of bodybuilders

Anyway… aside from dragons the most powerful/evil/great character I can think of here is Caudecus. Considering his estate, he has a huge ego issue. I realise he’s more like the old Lannister than what you’re talking about. I can’t think of anyone especiallly huge. Aside dragons.

Sorry if that doesn’t reply to your post :/

That applies to all of Destiny’s Edge and the majority of major characters. Faces aren’t what I’d consider a “unique physical appearance.” My OP had examples of what I meant: The Mountain and Garrosh Hellscream.

Are there any abnormally tall characters? Unusually short? Extremely muscular? Fat?

That was actually a mechanical change, in raids it’s kinda hard to see a regular sized character. In fact ANet is doing the same with the new Hylek races in HoT.

Yeah, a good example is Scarlet, Molten firestorm, and molten berserker.

All three got ‘raid boss sized’. No Charr is THAT huge, nor any Dredge would be the same size to fit into that suit. Meanwhile in the Aetherblade path, we see an Asura in the firestorm suit and she is normal size for an asura.

I recall Scarlet being bumped up in size, but I forget how much of that was the hologram.

Veteran, Champion, and Legendary NPCs have a size increase to them – you see large NPCs in every dungeon path more often than not. Go do the Barrowstead meta chain in Frostgorge and compare the normal and elite (same size) to veterans and champions.

It’s not a lore thing.

The hylek races in HoT being much bigger is a lore thing though, not mechanics – and not one I quite understand, truth be told.

Well they said they made them bigger so that players can see their animations better, which is purely a mechanic thing. How is that a lore thing?

Turai is one I’d grant, though I’d love to hear why and if anything mentions him being so huge.

But yeah, he appears pretty darn big (but not Norn big) in almost every appearance we see of him, including when we play as him in GW1.

Because they tied the size into the hylek’s lore for their ferocity – particularly in the case of the Nuhoch.

And I just rechecked the blog posts Anet released on the new hylek tribes. Nowhere did I see it mentioned that their increased size is so players can see their animations.

It’s a model used about 5 times or fewer throughout the game for a really old, and sometimes creepy, woman. There’s a hero challenge in Brisban – in the bog – where you get a soup made from imp meat from an old woman with that model.

I remember hearing that too… it was the PoI livestream, I think, either number 18 or 19.

But regardless, even if the original reason was to emphasize animations, they have worked it into the lore. It is canon that the Nuhoch are massive. By comparison, it should be pointed out that there’s no indication that, say, the Aetherblade admiral in the battle for Lion’s Arch, or the keep lords in WvW, are from an in-universe perspective as large as we see them in game.

R.I.P., Old Man of Auld Red Wharf. Gone but never forgotten.

Yeah I’m sure they said it on the PoI livestream. I don’t watch them that often, that’s why I’m pretty certain about it.
I think they even said that, while the Nuhoch where always supposed to be massive, they upscaled them too, to compromise for enlarging the Itzel. So I would say that yes, the Nuhoch being large is anchored in the lore, it’s still has a mechanical reason behind it too.

There aren’t any abnormally large baddies, but Rytlock has a unique face that cannot be duplicated nor appears on any other NPC. Although not a “bad guy” (yet), Rytlock has a lot of similarities to Garrosh, honestly, and I think those similarities are only going to increase as the living world progresses.

Not really. Rytlock can be quite rational, and stand within the same room as somebody he hates without instantly leaping into combat. Garrosh, in one scene I remember seeing and hearing about, literally leapt axe drawn at a human the second the human entered the room. Garrosh was quite stupid (Sending all his escorts to attack an Alliance fleet, causing his own air fleet to be completely destroyed by dragons), irrational, and very prone to rage and angry.

Rytock I would never compare to Garrosh. I honestly don’t even see how you see them being alike.

I didn’t say they were identical, just have similar qualities. Or rather will have similar qualities; it seems that Rytlock is going to be heading up some kind of xenophobic crusade against the sylvari cause they “can’t be trusted.” I would bet money that Rytlock becomes the new Kahn-ur either by the end of this x-pac or the beginning of the next, and when that happens he is going to get more aggressive. But yes, Rytlock is far calmer and more intelligent that Garrosh.

Eh, we’ve seen him say stuff in anger, but later change his mind (unlike Garrosh, from what I’ve heard :P)

The one line really can’t be used to imply he’ll head some anti-sylvari campaign without context of scene at hand. I also wouldn’t see him becoming Khan-Ur either honestly. ATM, Smodur is the most likely to get that job. (At least until we have an idea of what the Blood and Ash legion heads are like).

To become Khan-Ur, one must be descended from the original Khan-Ur. All such descendants are in the prime warband of the legions – in other words, in Smodur’s, Bangar’s, and Malice’s warbands.

Unless, of course, that’s yet another thing they’ve decided to retcon/will retcon.

We know nothing about Rytlock’s past, he could very well be a descendant of the Original Khan-Ur. We do know that his relationship with both his warband, and his people (the blood legion) is strained. Which is why he seems much closer to the Iron Legion. He was, after all, a part of an Iron Legion warband when we first met him in the book, and when Logan asked about it, he didn’t want to talk about it. It’s entirely plausible that Rytlock is the brother of Bangar Ruinbringer, and that they don’t exactly see eye to eye, which could open up a story involving a struggle for power, and ultimately Rytlock gaining control of the Blood Legion, and eventually all three Legions.

The Stone Warband isn’t the prime warband of the Blood Legion. Traditionally, it should be the Blood Warband – but that piece seems to have been retcon given Swordshadow and Ruinbringer, so given Ruinbringer’s name, it’s either Ruin Warband or Bringer Warband that’s the Blood Legion’s prime warband.

And Edge of Destiny implied that Rytlock (at that time, which is only a few years before GW2 story) was actually very, very low on the totem pole of Charr ranking.

I’m sure a member of the prime warbands would not be that low of a status.

I don’t think Gaheron has three eyes, just a splot of lava on his face in the middle of his forehead that makes it look like he has a third, molten, eye.
