I will come strait to the point, I do not like how The Pale Tree has been portray – with an Avatar.

if you look back at the concept art and the tree in Guild Wars 1. you do not need and Avatar.

I’m not a real big fan of the avatar either. The whole saccharin sweet thing was overdone. It would have been better to just have the tree with a disembodied voice.

Yes the Avatar is/was needed.

The Pale Tree, also known as the Mother Tree to the sylvari, is a massive, magical, sentient tree which is the mother of all playable sylvari. She is aware of activity around her and can manifest as an avatar of herself and will converse with those who seek her wisdom.

All is normal as this shows.
The Avatar of the Tree is the spiritual representation of the Pale Tree, used in order to communicate openly with other beings, primarily her children, the sylvari.

An avatar isn’t necessary for communication. It’s merely a design choice and it could have been done less overtly.

Now you can move along.

You quote lore from the wiki, but who wrote that lore. That lore isn’t fact. It’s lore. It could have changed if it made the game better. In fact, there’s no reason that a tree that shares a dream with it’s children can’t communicate with them telepathically.

At any rate, it’s not just that it has an avatar, it’s the form the avatar took and the way the avatar spoke. I didn’t buy into it. And that’s a problem for me.

Guild Wars 2 has a lot of good things about it, I really am a fan, but they lean to much to the stereo-typical and they don’t have to.

I’m not a fan either. I felt it humanised the Pale Tree, and removed the mystery surrounding it. They should have just made something like a bright glowing orb instead.

Yep, I agree. And a bright glowing orb that didn’t speak in a voice that sounded like someone’s doting grand mother.

Since the Sylvari draw a lot of inspiration from Irish and Celtic folklore, I never really hard a problem with the Pale Tree’s avatar. She easily fits into the role of the ‘Queen of the (Seelie)Fae’ for me. That also works, since the Sylvari was probably heavily influenced by the cancelled Sidhe race from Guild Wars: Utopia.

I have no problem with the Pale Tree having an avatar. It makes the cutscenes between my Sylvari, Caithe, Traehearne, and Mother Tree better, if you ask me.

Even if the Sylvari themselves did not need an avatar for the Pale Tree, the avatar goes a long way in communicating with the other races of Tyria, who might not be as comfortable in addressing a disembodied voice. Instead of thinking of it as an avatar, why not instead think of it as a diplomat for the Sylvari race. Consider some of the other races histories with gods or disembodied voices posing as gods.

Though written by the fan-base, it’s still lore and fact. He should have quoted the source though, but the interview stating that seems to have been lost in wiki re-editing.

Communication with NON-SYLVARI. As Dream and Nightmare shows, the Pale Tree can and does talk directly to its children as a disembodied voice, but she cannot to non-sylvari. Because it doesn’t have a mouth.

Just got the game, never played the first one; so all the lore is new to me. I personally found it (avatar) a nice touch, to be honest. It stands out from the rest of the Sylvari by being shimmering and golden, so why not? Again, without prior experience or “taste” of how this game’s lore should unfold. Though it would be the last thing I would complain about after zombies displaying karate moves and robots with robotic voices out of Fallout 3. lol. Joking aside, I like what this game does in terms of lore. You can tell they make an effort and I think it works really well from what I’ve seen so far. So thumbs up for the avatar from me.

I LOLed. Additionally, it’s rather difficult to move a vey large tree to another location, but the avatar can move freely. Assuming there was a meeting to discuss the alliance between the races in Lion’s Arch or somesuch, it’d be logistically… problematic. Now, she can literally just sit at the table like all the other representatives.

I don’t think the Avatar o the Tree leaves the grove. Heck, we never see it leave that Omphalos (sp?) Chamber. But it is still what’s used to communicate to those that go to her physically.

Ya. I remember an interview that said the pale tree uses diplomats to other kingdoms to set policy or make treaty or what not. but diplomats from other kingdoms to the grove would still need her avatar to communicate with her.
