Q:

I apologize if this has been asked before, but the wonderful search feature brought up nothing. Is the Scarlet LS before or after the personal story?

The search feature on this site doesn’t really work. At least I’ve never seen it work and always get “no results found” even when I search for a thread that’s on the first page. So yeah, it’s broken.

But how can the Living World be after the Personal Story according to this dev post in the lesbian relationship thread of the lore and story portion of the board?

Rox, Braham, Marjory, Kasmeer, and Taimi are referred to internally as “B-Iconics” (or Biconics) as opposed to our “A-Iconics” or main iconic characters, Caithe, Rytlock, Eir, Zojja, and Logan. They are not a “replacement” for Destiny’s Edge; these characters fulfill a different role in the story. Because members of Destiny’s Edge are so entwined with your Personal Story as well as the over-arching story with Zhaitan, and because the Living World plot lines are taking place at the same time all those other story threads, we couldn’t have the members of Destiny’s Edge splitting themselves between these other areas and what was going on with Living World. This is partly why we introduced these new characters.

This dev states that they take place…. at the same time.

Which is very weird, because other devs have explicitly stated that LW follows PS. If anything, that means they aren’t all on the same page, which is really quite a bad thing.

They’re trying to make the LS and Personal Story occur in a way where they don’t directly clash with one another.

I mean keep in mind they did say that Lost Shores took place POST Zhaitan, and that was sorta the first living story patch and nothing else would make sense chronologically if it wasn’t so….

I wish that ANet would just come out and say, “Hey, we can’t really get these top notch voice actors that we got to voice Destiny’s Edge back to do voice acting for every Living World update.”

That would be the best answer they can give, instead of these, as Aaron said, mixed messages.

That or ANet needs to release an official timeline, like what they did for what happened in between GW1 and GW2.

Well Logan seems to be a common reoccurring character…. Everyone else (especially Rytlock) seems to be pretty rare, I mean one of the lines Rytlock said last patch didn’t even sound like Rytlock lol

Uh, they actually have said that they can’t get the voice actors regularly – especially Felicia Day – and that is why they created the “biconics” in the first place. But that’s irrelevant to the timeline.

What ArenaNet’s “official stance” is about the Living World ever since Flame and Frost is that it happens “when players experience it” which is a real clusterkitten explanation as it basically means, for person A, Zhaitan lives; for person B, Zhaitan’s defeated – at the same time.

And the fact of the matter is that they’re doing it this way to avoid spoilers – another moot point, honestly, given the fact that since Dragon Bash, the existence of the Pact was more or less mandatory because the behind-the-scenes lore on the Aetherblade’s airships is that they were (originally) stolen from the Pact and modified by the Inquest (after the first few, though, they’ve been making their own in places like Twilight Arbor). Tequatl Rising outright mentions the Pact to everyone even if they didn’t reach Retribution or Forging the Pact yet.

And honestly (again), nowadays only those who either don’t feel like doing the personal story or are new players who don’t even know wtf is going on with the living story have not beaten Zhaitan (or those who cannot get four other places to beat him once reaching Victory or Death).

Back during The Lost Shores, however, Matthew Medina has stated that it happened post-Zhaitan’s defeat. Flame and Frost as well as Tequatl Rising (and obviously Secret of Southsun/Last Stand at Southsun and the follow ups of Dragon Bash, Sky Pirates, Bazaar of the Four Winds, Cutthroat Politics, and now Edge of the Mists) are all stated to be post-Southsun’s discovery. Which would mean that, at least before Flame and Frost, it was intended for the updates to be post-Zhaitan. Why they changed it, I don’t know. Likely, again, for spoiler reasons which just makes a nice big ol’ clusterkitten of the timeline. Especially with Twilight Assault which should, outside of ArenaNet’s “it happens when the players experience it” line, happen after the original Twilight Arbor explorable.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I don’t think that’s the issue – they have the cash to pay for Tara Strong (Scarlet) so yeah, I definitely don’t think that’s it. It’s more that people didn’t respond overly strongly to Destiny’s Edge and they wanted to create characters that have grown alongside the player – rather than ones we’ve simply watched act like children.

FlamingFoxx, during the livestream recap of the Living World, Angel McCoy first let the nickname “biconics” slip. After that, she explained the internal nickname we were never meant to hear – and how they came to be, stating that the voice actors used for Destiny’s Edge are hard to schedule.

Tis not a money issue, but a time and availability issue.

Just wanted to point out that the line where Rytlock doesn’t sound like himself was likely them forgetting the voice filter they use to deepen/distort Rytlock’s voice. Steve Blum is Rytlock’s V.O. and that line without the filter is unmistakably Blum’s normal voice.

This problem happens a great deal in the Romke’s Final Voyage PS step. Anytime the player isn’t in one of the cutscenes and just walking around, Romke’s lines no longer have the filter distorting his voice to sound “ghostly.”

Well in regards to the voices: A) get the actors in to record a years worth of Living Story dialog (which compared to the last year worth of content probably wouldn’t be all that much) B) get other actors. I guess option B would cause a bit of grumbling, option A) would require ANet to create content a year ahead of time and that’s simply impracticable and hap-hazardous.
But hey I don’t really have much issue with the biconics, it’s a big world and a lot of stuff can happen and I’m sure destiny’s edge is busy.

I hope you folks are seriously not considering the LS is happening at the same time as the Personal Story, and this is just a slip up on the post. I also would hope that everyone on the team can get this stuff straight so that this confusion doesn’t happen.

What Regina means is that for players who are currently going through their Personal Story, the LW timeline will seem to be happening at the same time. Technically, they happen at different times in Tyrian history. Personal Story predates the current Living World season by approximately one year.

So when you’re playing your Personal Story and are in an instance with Rytlock, etc. the assumption is that this is happening “in the past” whereas LW events are happening now.

Our hope is to provide better distinction of these timelines within the game, but that would come with the release of a planned feature that we’re not ready to discuss in depth just yet.

The LW is post-Zhaitan, Bobby Stein has confirmed as much. Even better, they are working on tools to make the timeline clearer ingame.

The LS starts after the PS, but I can’t help but think there must be some overlapped taking place.
Mainly because it doesn’t really seem possible that within the space of only a year, you’d go from being a complete unknown, to a local hero, then get recruited to one of the orders, rise through the ranks of said order, form the pact, then lead an army across half the continent before defeating an elder dragon. I find that highly unlikely.

Also Tequatl made an appearance within the LS, would he really be going around causing a ruckus when his master had been killed? Would it not be more likely that he’d skulk off and hide so as not to become another victim?

Also with the interaction with the LS hero npcs, I can’t say I feel that my character is the Commander of the Pact that brought down an elder dragon. You’d imagine I’d be kind of a big deal, but I get the feeling that Braham and crew don’t recognise you for the adorned war hero that you are, but instead as some common adventurer that just walked in off the street.

Where was this said? Can you link?

I find that highly unlikely.

Occam, the sylvari blacksmith, stated in The Source of Orr (when you return to Fort Trinity) that the time since he joined the Pact (read: Forging the Pact) was only “several weeks” – that means the entire campaign from creating the pact to just before killing Zhaitan was “several weeks” – most likely fewer than 4 months, because otherwise he’d have said “several months.”

Given that timespan, saying the rest of the personal story takes place all within 1325 is not that hard to believe. Especially when you take into consideration that the norn tutorial is supposedly during the winter (or just after), placing it at the end of 1324 or the veyr beginning of 1325 AE (after the tutorial would be in 1325 AE throughout though). Given Wayfarer’s defrosted state, the beginning stuff being in spring makes pretty good sense.

And since The Lost Shores is post Zhaitan, then Thorn’s return likely was as well. So the whole of the personal story basically covers all of Spring and summer, and half of Fall of 1325 AE. Roughly.

Also Tequatl made an appearance within the LS, would he really be going around causing a ruckus when his master had been killed? Would it not be more likely that he’d skulk off and hide so as not to become another victim?

To your first question: Yes. To your second question: No.

See: Arah explorable.

And it is because they “don’t recognize you” that from the very beginning, Kiel, Marjory, Braham, and Rox all rely upon you – a total stranger. Makes sense.

Side note: Rytlock and Smodur – among others – had made mention of knowing you during Flame and Frost. I believe Logan did to during the Opening Ceremony of Queen’s Jubilee for Pact Commanders (read: completed Forging the Pact), though I know he did for sure with humans. But those dialogue lines were very buggy that update.

The link is in the quote. Click on Bobby’s username to get taken to the post in the thread (it’s in the lesbian thread for some reason, I guess they read that one more than most given how much red is posted in there).

I though Scott McGough was clear during the Wartower interview that the Personal Story is history at this point in time. People argued about it so I left it alone. It’s been said again in clear terms. Living Story takes place after the end of the Personal Story but it’s written so as not to touch any of the Personal Story plots whenever possible (to avoid spoilers for people who haven’t yet finished the Personal Story). Given how confused people have been over this issue, I don’t understand why they didn’t clear the time line up until a few weeks before the finale.
