“Seriously, just dodge.”
So I decided to stroll over to my good ol’ friend Canach in the Vigil Keep.
He seems to be handling his imprisonment well, especially since he’s been cooperative enough to be a Billet offer for some noble.
Essentially I just got done talking with him and Officer Siriam, apparently LA has a means of trading off prisoners to serve their sentence under another individual, who will take the blame if the prisoner does something bad again. Kind of like an indentured slave until the prisoner finishes his time served then goes free.
Who bought him? “Some human. Had a noble demeanor, so I’m guessing Canach would be some sort of domestic if she bought him…” – Officer Siriam
You can get more details from the Outer Vigil Keep Wall, on the west side. I got a couple of images for proof…
…Who bought him?
Oh, one of the hints for S2 it would seem!
Good find.
Female human noble immediately brings to mind Kasmeer, though it could also possibly be a new character.
Aye, I actually really like Canach as a person and a character. I am hopeful my own ‘suspicions’ about his role in the future are right.
But we will see.
People who come to mind:
- Mai Trin (They were “close” for a while)
- Kiel (though she is no noble, but would make sense)
- Anise (She always has a need for experienced people)
- Someone else we do not know…
Could be Marjory/Kasmeer, Marjory funding the billet while Kasmeer is the public face (since her family’s in ruins, so she couldn’t outright buy out Canach herself).
The billet thing is no new info. It was first mentioned with Edge of Destiny, though Canach is the first in-game mention of such. What’s new is them auctioning the billets off.
But let’s see known female humans with noble demeanors:
I can’t see it being Mai Trin, as LA would recongize her and she hardly seems like someone who’d have a noble demeanor. Same goes for Kiel – she’d be recognized and hardly someone who has noble demeanor.
My bet is on Anise, Lady Wi, or someone we don’t know.
It’s Livia.
:)
I wish…
Konig you are right. Kiel seems out of the question under these circumstances.
However even if we talk about a diminished human race, not everyone would know every noble out there.
So it could be someone new, we do not know.
However under these circumstances we cannot rule out Mai Trin, getting him under a disguise.
She is a pirate, she would know how to forge a new identity and some documents to get something she could “use”.
No, but a Sheriff Siriam of the Lionguard would certainly know about a former prisoner (Mai Trin) and a member of the Captain’s Council and former Lionguard member (Ellen Kiel). Sheriff Siriam would be above anyone else the one who knows Kiel and Mai Trin, having met both of them recently (Mai Trin while she was imprisoned, and Kiel multiple times most recently during Escape from LA).
I thought Kasmeer wasn’t a noble anymore.
The nobility doesn’t really seem to have titles anymore, at least not in the city, so it wouldn’t be something her family could be stripped of. In any event, the person had a “noble demeanor”, so simply growing up in that crowd would satisfy the condition.
Noble demeanor doesn’t necessarily mean that she is still noble. It could be basically every female human which knows how to behave, has the dresses (also not mentioned) and the money.
There is no “M”. There is only E.
Which, given we don’t know E’s gender, it could be E who bought Canach’s billet. But my guess is still Countess Anise or Lady Wi.
E, I think, will be the Master of Peace. Why? “Master of” feels very reminiscent of Master of Whispers (and Zephyrites hold a strong Elonian tie along with Canthan tie), and he’d be interested in the politics of the world (balancing peace and whatnot), and there’s hints of the Zephyrites holding something of interest for Season 2 – and we’re told we’ll know who E is by the end of Season 2. Faren’s still my second guess for E, just because it’d be a fun plot twist and Faren does tend to stick his nose… oh, just about everywhere political.
One suggestion that I read and liked the potential of was Belinda Delaqua, Marjory’s Sister.
Probably a great way to tie Canach together with the Brisban investigation…
If Canach was going into domestic service, which he won’t of course, the guard must be thinking that this lady has an impressive house or estate. She would of course need to have cash on hand for this sort of deal. It also suggests the lady isn’t known to run an organization that takes recruits, such as the orders. It would be very interesting if the lady was a separatist who was hiring Canach as a terrorist to disrupt the peace treaty but I’m guessing that won’t happen.
I don’t think big business would touch Canach with a barge pole after Southsun. Anyone who does hire him will probably need to share similar goals as Canach will rebel somehow if he hates his job. Even so, Canach will probably be left to carry the can if anything goes wrong as nobody will put their own reputation on the line for him. His skills might be of interest to anyone dealing with Scarlet’s nightmare stuff.
If we boldly suppose that Canach will appear in Brisban wildlands area, then we might be looking for a human lady who has an interest up there. No nobles seem to have land there, nobody seems interested in any druids or skritt, but there are plenty of bandits around and a dragon. The Seraph are sending regular troops there, so my guess would be the Shining Blade hiring Canach to investigate a new threat in Brisban and find out what’s behind it.

Yes sir i forgot the letter ;P
I think E is a better bet as we`ll likely get to know who is she on S2 and this Festival is pretty much a prelude for S2 it would be a good way to put her on the current story
Since when was slavery OK in Tyria?
It’s not slavery, it’s community service. Canach will have a set amount of hours/days to serve and then be free to go. In theory, it’s supposed to be for the good of the community he harmed, but since LA is desperate they’ve apparently relaxed standards. He’ll be like any other employee (excepting wages), and similarly protected against gross mistreatment, inhumane conditions, etc.
(edited by Aaron Ansari.1604)
I’m not trying to be argumentative (I’m also refering to the other thread with that comment) but that sounds a lot like slavery to me.
From Wikipedia: Slavery is a system under which people are treated as property to be bought and sold, and are forced to work.
Technically whoever purchases the billet does not own Canache, they own his billet, but in practice it’s not that different. I don’t know how long his sentence is (what does someone get for attempted mass murder, terrorism, inciting riots, destruction of property etc in Tyria these days?) but it sounds like for the duration of his sentence, Canach will be a slave for whoever buys his billet.
Some slaves were given wages (and in Rome they were able to save up and buy their own freedom) and perform the roles of a normal employee (maids, cotton pickers, butlers etc). Not all slaves were mistreated either, so you can still perform those roles and still qualify as a slave. At the very least I would argue this is a form of debt bondage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debt_bondage) a contemporary form of slavery.
I guess slavery is legal in Tyria then, because lets face it, that’s exactly what it is.
Slavery’s illegal in KRYTA, but Lion’s Arch is an independent city-state founded by pirates.
Anyway, did this mystery noblewoman actually buy Canach’s billet? Because the impression I got (I may be misremembering) was that Canach’s gotten some interested buyers, but no one’s actually bought his billet yet.
It isn’t really slavery because there’s something being paid off – it’s far closer to indentured servitude, but for prisoners (which basically makes it community service).
I suppose it depends on your definition of slavery, but slavery is against someone’s freedom, and prisoners… don’t have that freedom in the first place – lawfully speaking at least.
Slavery – that is, taking free people and enslaving them – is not legal in Tyria. Lion’s Arch has the billet system as a means of making use of prisoners – no free person can be bought. The billets is basically no different from bail, except that it gives responsibility of the prisoner to the buyer of the billet. Standard practice is that the prisoner would pay to the buyer of the billet the cost of the billet – as done with Logan, Rytlock, and Caithe (and other prisoners who’s billets were bought by Magnus to fight in the Zaishen arena at Fort Marriner).
One suggestion that I read and liked the potential of was Belinda Delaqua, Marjory’s Sister.

Hmm. I didn’t think of that. Let’s cross our fingers and hope.
Since when was slavery OK in Tyria?
Billets, as explained by Canach ingame (I think during edge of the mists at first?) sounded like it’s more of you pay for the bail/money worth of remaining jailtime, and then you select what he does for community service. One of the major sources of billet buying was the arena where they’d do a set amount of matches before being freed, but IIRC, Canach actually implied that prisoners can refuse a billet (He said something along the lines about how he wouldn’t do the arena fighting) and simply spend their time in jail.
“Lion’s Arch justice is…flexible. My sentence can be reduced for good behavior, or someone could buy my billet and I’d be released early to work for them.”
Buy your billet? What is that?
“It’s essentially a work-release program that allows me to earn my freedom early. Most prisoners are billeted to fight in the arena, but that doesn’t appeal to me…even if I could find a buyer.”
Yeah, EoD explicitly spells out that serving out the sentence is an option, and the choice is entirely in the prisoner’s hands.
My impression from Edge of Destiny, actually, was that the billet was essentially a fine, which could be paid off by working for the billet-holder in lieu of an up-front payment. It’s a form of indentured servitude, but it’s indentured servitude instead of jail, which is what happens in most Western nations if you don’t pay a fine. If you can afford the fine, you just pay the fine and go free (essentially, you can buy your own billet). Under normal circumstances I expect the Lionguard would keep an eye on the billet to make sure it isn’t abusive, but if LA is relaxing standards because they need money, Canach might not be so lucky. Given his history, though, I suspect he’d refuse to work for an outright villain, although he could end up in another hairy situation if he doesn’t initially realise what his billet-holder was up to.
My gut feeling is that it’s not Kasmeer, Marjory, Anise or Jennah, since any of those would probably be recognised (unless in disguise). Anise is probably the one most likely not to be recognised without a disguise out of that group, however.
Note about E: deep voice (probable male gender), at least the same height as Marjory (maybe bigger), probably thief profession
I don’t think we have enough to guess his profession. Yes, he was sneaky, but sneaky doesn’t automatically entail stealth magic, and even if it did, stealth magic isn’t exclusive to the thief.
“There! A black-cloaked figure slid through the shadows on the far side of the street.”
(okay a thief wouldn’t be visible at all, but she hunted Kraig the Bleak, maybe he was it)
…
“I stood slowly, and as I reached my full height, a body came up gently behind me. Arms wrapped so intimately around me that my fight or flight instincts never kicked in. Then, a knife appeared at my throat.”
(Not many professions use them)
…
“A deep voice whispered next to my ear, “Calm.” I sensed no necromantic power radiating from my captor. This was someone different.”
(excludes one dagger profession)
…
“Before I knew it, I was released, throat intact. I spun around, but no one was there. My captor—E—had left me standing, alone …”
(very thiefy skills, mesmer are louder, engineer don’t use dagger, ranger is possible but unexpected, warrior/guardian/elementalist not known for stealth)
No confirmation is done, that’s why I wrote probably a thief.

Keep in mind, Horst, that NPCs aren’t limited to the mechanics players are – especially in stories. Anyone can use a dagger lore-wise, just like Guardians and Warriors aren’t forced to wear heavy metallic armor (see Logan in Edge of Destiny).
I think the ability to feel so peaceful while bringing a dagger up to someone’s throat hints further at the Master of Peace – whom else, but the master of a group who upholds balance and peace in their teachings, can give off a lack of threatening feeling?
The major point was that E is more probable male and is not a good candidate for being Canach’s owner. (Sorry for the thief argument, it doesn’t belong in this thread)

In a world where people can change their appearance (and that of others) at will it isn’t really that farfetched to assume they can also alter their voice though.
Mr E is hidden anyway, so there’s little point creating a fake identity for a fake identity. Maybe there’s a Mrs E?
I’m guessing Mr. E bought Canach off and is also Ela Makkay, the Priory Scholar that’s been around the whole time. She’s human, appeared and documented all of the happenings in the Living Story, and is also a part of the Priory, which Marjory Delaqua is a part of. In fact, as Mr. E, Ela Makkay may have convinced Marjory to join in order to indirectly give her evidence, hints, and other information.
That surprisingly sounds plausible. Although I’m not sure how long she’s been around (I know at least since Tower of Nightmares), she has been a very investigative person.

She’s been around since the Molten Alliance, recording stories from the refugees.
Yeah, though she’s appeared as “Ela Makkay”, “Scholar Ela Makkay”, and “Scholar Makkay”. So it could have gotten them thought to be separate individuals.

Think of the writing team you’re talking about, they love writing female characters. The deep voice was so obviously meant to make you think E is male. Just like all that nonsense Marjory said last year positioning the audience into thinking Kasmeer was vulnerable in some way was a set up to make us impressed by her defiant stance on the breachmaker, the deep voice is more than likely the same thing. Honestly I think the most likely gender for E is not male.
But we’ve been down this road before, E is a waste of a discussion because we aren’t supposed to know who he/she is. There isn’t enough information to go any which way, prove or disprove any theory. E could be a one eyed one horned flying purple people eater and it would still fit everything we’ve been given.
(edited by Shiren.9532)
I would be inclined to think that given how the description of how Marjory is held implies that R’s body is pressed up behind hers, she’d probably have more to go on than voice in judging E’s gender. And so far, Marjory seems to either think E is male, or has been deliberately spreading that misinformation.
I think it’s Marjory’s sister. Because if she’s going to die in Brisban Wildlands, Canach must run away to tell us the story and avenge her.
Furthermore, there is a large interest in Canach because he partially understood Scarlet’s motivates, and the new Elder Dragon awoke near Brisban Wildlands.
Belinda doesn’t really have a noble demeanor though.
I suspect it is Kasmeer so that Canach will fill the Sylvari role for the biconics that Scarlet was denied.
I don’t see it being Kasmeer. She’s been with Marjory the whole time and, more importantly, in Labyrinthine Cliffs for most of that time. If it were Kasmeer it’d be before the instance and would likely have been hinted at by one of those two, or a mention of multiples rather than the one.
Do we know who the battlemaster of the gaunlet is? I mean those fighter seem to have billets too and we buy the entrance to the fight (more or less), so they can buy themselfes free. A buyer with a noble demeanor could also be the queens battlemaster (which is surely female and human, because pattern). The only thing that denies this answer is the seemingly common red herring.
The Gauntlet is an arena for fighters, not a prison fight. I don’t see where you get that they have billets.
We do not see where the fighter take their rest. The Arena in LA got closed not very long before the game started and it was long enough to set up the former gate hub onto the position. There are some smaller arenas, but nothing that we can access or we see any fight Tyrian vs Tyrian (not beast, summon or whatever/just playable or cultivated races).
My first assumption was that those arenas just don’t exist anymore, but since Canach got bought, there must be at least one. We never meet one of the queen’s gaunlet in the open world and the informations of them are well choosen to make them interesting for fights while leaving out any background. We (the player) buy the tickets for the fight and an invisible audience (you can hear them from time to time) gets entertained. The raw description of the fighter additional gives a feeling that they are not very welcome (for example Doobroosh which is aggressive until provoked, then plain aggressive).
At all it looks like an adapted version of the LA arena plus an additional entertaining slaughterhouse.
The billet thing is no new info. It was first mentioned with Edge of Destiny, though Canach is the first in-game mention of such. What’s new is them auctioning the billets off.

- Minister Ailoda
- Minister Rachel
I can’t see it being Mai Trin, as LA would recongize her and she hardly seems like someone who’d have a noble demeanor. Same goes for Kiel – she’d be recognized and hardly someone who has noble demeanor.

Konig, I can’t believe you forgot about Demmi Beetlestone (also OoW).

Not really that close. He awoke in the Magus Falls, at the far left edge of the map.
Also, the pavilion fights are in two groups.
Group A(The lower areas, themed) are all watchknights with illusions on them
Group B(The upper rings, the gauntlet) are all likely contracted/paid arena fighters.
