So, I’m just now installing GW2 on a new PC after a pretty long break, and for some reason, I’m really into the idea of playing a Charr, specifically. I’m kinda leaning towards Engineer, but not totally sure on that part.

Anyways, I’m terrible when it comes to making up names, but I’d really like something that sounds “Lore-friendly”. That is, something that sounds like it could be an actual character’s name, but isn’t. I don’t role-play or anything, but I just like the thought of having a character who just really “fits” into the world, ya know?

Also; what do you think about the Engineer? Does it actually fit the Charr, or not so much? And, without spoiling anything, any preferences on the character-creation choices?

Engineer fits very well for Charr – in fact the origins of the Engineer are heavily rooted in Charr technology.

As for a name…Charr surnames are always a combination of two words, one of which denotes the Charr’ s warband. For instance, Gearblade could be in the Gear warband, or Sharpclaw from the Claw warband. Just pick two words that sound appropriate and put them together.

First names don’t have as specific conventions, but I tend to like harsh-sounding sounds. My Charr thief, for instance, is Kirok Emberclaw. Most Charr male names end in consonants, while female names can end in vowels.

The ending-in-vowel for female name is more of an asura thing.

Male charr names are indeed rather sharp, while female are more fluid. Both feature a lot of consonants in the name.

For character creation… my personal favorite storylines were Gladium father and Ash Legion. But Blood and Shaman father were good too.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

The only thing about creation I can say is DONT go for small/thin. It look ridiculus on Charr medium armor, you’re like a walking X. Story choices doesnt really matter.

Charr have a pretty wide variety of names, from Greco-Roman (Euryale, Elexus, Seneca) to very modern (Clawspur, Dinky, Maverick). So you almost can’t go wrong. My personal preference is for something that sounds somewhat harsh/growly for those Greco-Roman names that go well with all the Latin military terms the charr use (Legion, manipel, centurion, etc.).

A charr engineer from the Iron Legion is one of the most archetypical characters in the game, so don’t worry about engineer not fitting the species! They’re best for it, theme-wise.

As much as I love the charr, here’s a word of warning: many armors look like garbage on them, sadly, because they were designed exclusively for humans. Not only does a fancy, frilly design look patently weird on a charr, but there’s mane-, horn- and especially tail-clipping everywhere, even on some racial armors. Pauldrons are more likely to noticeably hover above your body than to actually touch your shoulders — again, even on racial armors, and especially on female characters. And because of the hunched posture, many textures look visibly stretched or distorted.

My suggestion: make a charr, pop into the Heart of the Mists and play with the PvP armor locker. If you can find some outfits there that look sweet to you and are not a complete PITA to acquire (check the wiki or a gallery site like http://argos-soft.net/GW2ArmorGallery/ for info of how to get the skin you want in PvE), you’re set. If not, you may be happier with another species.

At least you won’t have to deal with BS gendered armor when you play a female character, since both genders use the same armor model.

Charr are awesome. For the Legions!

There are numerous examples though – Arda, Torga, Reeva, Eurayle, Wroda, and Fulvia, to name a few. Not that it’s necessarily a set convention but it definitely seems relatively common, more so than with males, at least.

Ash was definitely my favorite Legion storyline. I have not had the chance to try Gladium, but I did enjoy Shaman. Overall I think Charr have some of the best early personal storyline so you can’t go too far wrong.

If you’re for the warband themed names I s’pose you can always go with something that’s quaintly if not directly related to w/e legion you’re gonna join…like,Exodus Battleborn for Blood,Exodus Duskblade for Ash or Exodus Steelclaw for Iron. These are random examples I just came up with but if you think on it for a while you can come up with something unique and kitten Personally I found the generic warband names too mainstream and use a different themed name on my charr…cus everyone including the npc charr use creative warband names and I prefer being different, but taste differs.CHARRRRR RAWWWRRRRR!

I named my Charr Engineer Flashtail for no particular reason (probably because the first 20 names I wanted were taken). Half way through the personal story I was introduced to my father, Clement Forktail. That’s a coincidence I wasn’t expecting!

Charr names are fun. Short, simple, and fun to play around with. Me and some others all decided to be in the same warband, so we got sort of a theme going. Slash Redmaw, Axle Redfang, Duff Redclaw…yeah I think you get where this is going XD

My charr’s name is pretty simple. Brea Bloodflame. She’s in the blood warband and she’s hotblooded often enough to get her the name Bloodflame. Since the game started though, and she lost her warband, becoming the Legionnaire she has stopped being as brutish and has leveled it with a bit of diplomacy becoming more militant

My female charr mesmer is Crux Mindwrack. I like the warband surname – it makes it a lot easier to find a name for a character that isn’t taken and provides flavor at the same time.

Most charr have a personal name with the specifications stated in the comments before and have the name of their war-band as half their surname.
When a charr loses his warband due to the death of their comrades or because he/she gets spelled from the group. They become gladium. Some of them keep their surname, some others get a new one, and the rest go on only with their name.
So if you see a charr with no surname, you can be sure he’s a Gladium. Ergo, there’s a funky story behind.
If you’re going to get your charr a surname, be sure it’s no for one of his/her attributes. It should be the name of his/her whole warband.
If your charr has a surname that is too personal, it would look like a gladium.

Here are some gladium names:
Almorra Soulkeeper (she kept the soul of her dead warband)
Fyon the Wraith (no real surname)
Rox (no surname)
Soure Doomsday
Tybalt Leftpaw (he only has one his left paw)

And some regular charr names:
Rytlock Brimstone (stone warband)(blood legion)
Scylla Rustcloud (rust warband)(iron legion)
Bathea Havocbringer(I guess havoc warband)(blood legion)
Hierophant Burntsoul(I guess burn warband)(flame legion)

Terin, I advise you to take a look on that link.
Even though I have to say that the name of the warband is not always at the beginning of the surname. Rytlock Brimstone is from the stone warband, as you can see in the last short story published by A.Net.

and some charrs keep their old warband surnames even when they change warbands.

i mean, rytlock was always “brimstone” as far as we know, but he spent a good chunk of EoD without an actual warband.

Anything in latin would be appropriate. Or a latin title or suffix would work as well. Think of them as roman soldiers.

Rytlock didn’t change or leave his warband, he acted detached from it, in a similar way the player charr do when they join an order.

i was pretty sure his warband had died in the logan/rytlock/ogre three way fight early in the book, but it’s been a while since i’ve read it, so i could be wrong.

I just read that part and it wasn’t his warbands. They just started following him because he slew their leader because he lead them into a trap. Plus, if I remember properly, he was already a tribune, so he had quite an authority.

tribune? no, i think he was legionaire. grabs book centurion. centurion rytlock brimstone, as quoted from the page 1 preview.

i don’t think the black citadel would enjoy seeing their tribune play gladiator alongside a human in lion’s arch.
