Q:
Creating Risen (spoilers)
I think that it may be easier to make undead out of “fresh resources”, after all, necros can use the reanimator trait to make a minion from a dead enemy without a thought, (whether they like it or not :P), but it takes time to raise other minions from assorted bits and pieces in the ground and scattered about.
makes sense really, a fresh corpse has mostly working parts, especially if they died of causes other than “massive stab/crushing wounds”, it’s like getting a jigsaw puzzle in a box versus a random mishmash of pieces from lots of jigsaw puzzles, some of which are broken(decayed) or damaged.
it’s possible that zhaitan has the same limitation.
there was another theory a while back that zhaitan rips the original souls out of the mists to give his minions autonomy (wheras, like trahearne says about necro minions “mine have never been alive, so they can’t be controlled by zhaitan’s power”), and that was the purpose of the ritual, in which case, the soul is still IN the body when it dies, and so the ritual is unnessecary
The way I see it, Zhaitan is not actually willing every body on the mainland to Rise— they Rise chaotically, as a result of his taint, as I think creatures in the Brand become Branded without much rhyme or reason (though stay for long, and you haven’t much hope).
In Orr, however, Zhaitan’s will is far stronger. He has corpses shipped to Orr to create large numbers at once, and to marshal an ‘organised’ army.
So I assumed the following: further away from Zhaitan’s will, the dead rise more chaotically, as a result of his taint. The bodies he has shipped to Orr for the ritual are his conscious effort to marshal an army, large numbers at a time.
I think there’s a difference, too, in the kinds of minions Zhaitan has in his arsenal. In the quest that you’re talking about, it’s kind of implied that only the more horrific creations of Zhaitan’s are made at this ossuary, particulary at the beginning of the quest when you have to slay the surgeons on the ritual platform so that Trahearne can begin his own ritual thing.
I think for the most part the regular minions— like what you see roaming around Orr usually— are created through Zhaitan’s corruption, not by patchwork at the ossuary.
In Edge of Destiny, and in a lot of personal story steps, its an instantaneous corruption (and rotting), but all of these are nearby large forces of risen and/or powerful risen.
Minions are made by being saturated in Zhaitan’s magic – if they die in the vicinity of powerful minions, e.g., a champion or in Orr, they’d turn immediately. If not, then their bodies would be commandeered and taken to one of the minion factories. That’s how it seems to be at least.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Thanks for all the answers guys, I don’t know which Anet has chosen so hopefully they shed some light on the subject

I agree with you Bander but it seems a waste of time to be attacking the ossuary instead of the the ark ship. By destorying the ark ship you also take down the crew and prevent Zhaitan shipping in reniforcments back to Orr.
Well, if I remember right, in the story both things get done. All you are doing is choosing which mission you wish to be a part of.

Well judging from everything else the would fail as no one can do anything without you being present, espceially in Guild Wars 2.
No, things occur and succeed without you, there’s just more casualties.
Well, unless you were the only one that would go there (e.g., if you don’t protect Quinn, he dies cuz no one goes to help him; if you go protect Quinn, Logan stops the poisoning but some still fell in whereas if you joined Logan no poison got in).
