Dessa and the Uncategorized Fractal
The story behind that fractal is supposedly a doomsday scenario. Rata Sum plunges into chaos and the only intelligent creature remaining is the raving Asura, who eventually goes mad. (Hence all the cat golems.)
I thought the Uncategorized fractal looked like Rata Sum… Mind you I was busy doing jumping puzzles while avoiding arrows.
Praise the Sun!
Desolation.
I really have my doubts if it is actually Rata Sum. In the fractal one of the sides of the triangle-shaped area (where you fight the 4 golems + raving asura) is facing the outside of the building, where as in Rata Sum they face the inside of Rata Sum.
Also not that for some reason, we don’t actually fight the asura himself.
It could be Rata Sum or it could be another city cube that met with a sticky fate. The flavour text for the Luminates plant event states that the Krewe are working on new city cubes so maybe this is more related to that than Rata Sum proper.
Correct me if I’m wrong here, but I’m fairly confident that “The Mists” themselves are memories of persons, places, and events of the past and never visions of the future.
“[The Mists] is where we find afterlives, the homes of the various gods, and other powerful entities. The Mists also resonate from the worlds around them, such that they form bits of their own reality – islands of existence that reflect the histories of their worlds.” … Jeff Grubb
I like this idea of The Mists being reflections of history, personally. I always, because of this, assumed that the fractal in question was a memory of an event which occurred during the construction of Rata Sum.

Well, Aneirin, that’s not entirely true; the Mists connect to everything, not just the past. They draw from past, present, and even future… which I think is where the Uncategorized Fractal comes from, since it seems to be a post-apocalyptic Rata Sum. Some minor changes in architecture, sure, but the overall layout is entirely Rata Sum.
In regards to the Mist drawing on all time periods:
“Before there were humans or dwarves, before there were even worlds or the stars that light the night sky, there was but one thing in the universe—the Mists. The Mists touch all things. They are what binds the universe together, past, present, and future. They are the source of all good and evil, of all matter and knowledge. It is said that all forms of life, no matter how simple or complex, can trace their origins back to this one place.”
From the Guild Wars Manuscripts. Emphasis mine.
This is just a random thought, but perhaps the locations within the mists are the creations of it’s denizens, the spirits of those that have died. I mean it would make sense that the last battle of your lifetime would be one that you would relive over and over again (Battle of Khylo, etc…), and should this occur the spirits would eternally wage the war trying to tip it in their favor. Now perhaps it isn’t something any individual in the mists could do, but perhaps with the large numbers of people that die in things like the Battle of Khylo, their collective memories and essence is what brings these places into being. Just a theory.
