Hi!
I’m wondering about the Dolyak Express (10th January) about the lore. When locked, devs says that the answers will come the next week. Did I miss them ?

We did ask a whole lotta questions, some of which they probably haven’t thought of themselves, and some of which they’ll have to pass up the ladder to find out what they can share. I’m willing to give them some leeway when it comes to self-inflicted deadlines, so long as the result is worth the wait.

They’re many questions about Charrs (between others), they answers only one, one that we already know the answers…
Me and my guild mates are truly disgusted.

Maybe GW2 isnt a MMORPG but a MMOG with powder of RP for the shining…

The thing with Lore questions is that sometimes they touch on stuff the devs don’t want to reveal yet or that they haven’t made a call on yet. Making up lore to answer questions on the fly can be risky as it tends to lead to issues later on with consistency. Blizz was just the same with their old lore Q&A.

Having said that I think we got some interesting answers. The info on the map in the Order of Whispers base is curious, particularly if we can figure out what we are looking at on the map.

I liked the Ogre and Centaur answers too.

One thing you will have to note is that questions were collected from four communities on the English, German, French, and Spanish forums. There were so many more questions than we could possibly answer. If we had our team answer all of them, they would not have time to work on the game and create the very lore that you’re currently playing. We tried to get a good spread of questions from each community.

I liked the Ogre and Centaur answers too.

By the Six yes! It has always bothered me that they discontinued the old lore blogs before they got to ogres. (Or centaurs, or dredge, or tengu, or harpies… but in retrospect mostly ogres.) That ogre religion question had been eating at me for well nigh a year.

You’re probably right, but why don’t say "questions about _______ cannot receive aswers currently". There, it’s seems more like "we don’t care" :/ No matter if it’s real or not, but it feel like this to us. My friends and me were waiting for the answers about Charrs to make our roleplay more consistent.

We’ll stand in the same case where a 5 years old fully grown adult with five brothers and sisters of the same litter live near a 15 year old teenager with no idea how to consider it.
Where Ascalonian players says that Charrs are not allow in Ebonhawk and chase them (other Humans fled long time ago).
Where players assume that Charrs are plague rats carrying many fleas or as clean as a home cat.
Where players think that gladium childs are not allowed in Fahrars and others play gladium child who just leave the Fahrar.
Some players think that Charrs are dumb beefy monsters with a few exceptions when other consider them as the second most intelligent race after Asura.

It’s a disturbing bitter feeling. What is false ? What is the general case and the exceptions ? How do we have to consider things ?

They can hardly list all the questions they couldn’t answer yet. That would take up far to much space. You need to consider for a moment exactly how many questions they would have actually gotten.

This was supposed to be a quick Q&A thing.

As for most of the things you raise about char we know most of the answers.

Charr ageing seems to be consistent with human aging.

Charr are allowed in Ebonhawk by virtue of the treaty.

There is nothing suggesting Charr have any more issue with parasites or personal hygiene than humans do.

We have also seen nothing to suggest that Gladium children aren’t raised in Fahrars. Most not raised in Fahrars are like the ones in LA who are being raised away from Charr lands.

I am a bit disappointed. The answers on the asura, centaur, and ogre were the only ones worthwhile, IMHO. And the ones on development, in the “behind the scenes” feel. But… that wasn’t lore.

No question about it, but honestly half of the questions answered felt like they weren’t really answers – and the two answered by Bobby were more about design and less about the lore itself.

It feels like they went out of their way to avoid the juicy questions! Only one truly juicy one (in response) was given. Unless we count the development one(s – kinda) answered by Bobby.

Though the others are nice to have, they’re not as nice to have as others would have been. Like the question on the Six Gods? We had known that question’s answered since 2009. It feels like a wasted answer completely, even if we received a bit more exposition into the answer (Abaddon’s fall and replacement being something that kept the gods responding to Tyria). And though I listed it as nice, since i hadn’t seen it before, the asura one was outright said to be a repeated answer. :/

I hope at he very least this questionnaire has shown the story writers what topics we, the community, want to find out about more.

Regina, should you – or any other dev for that matter – return to this thread, I have a request:

Please use the questions for a future news or forum post when the respective folks have some free/slowed down time in the future. That way, we can get a bit more out of what felt an overall lackluster Q&A.

Dear ANet writers,

Can’t say I’m not disappointed and confused.

Most questions from the other language forums (hooray for being multilingual!) actually were about juicy Lore-facts (Lord Odran, more about the Largos, the strange shaped tree-faces we asked about as well, Livia, new Khan-Ur, fate of the old GW1 cast, the Mursaats/Lazarus’ fate, Dhuum, White mantle, etc)

So it really /does/ feel like you avoided the interesting parts.

Beside some more info on the Ogres and more details about the Centaurs and confirmation on the Whispers-globe, it feels like the rest of the answers were uhm …foreseeable? Kinda obvious? Definitely not what most people were hoping to hear?

Also I haven’t seen anyone in the Spanish, French or German forum ask the LS-development-questions…(?)

Sooo, with that feeling of disappointment lingering, I second Konig’s suggestion of revisiting the questions in the thread if another Lore Q&A comes up.

Or maybe just note them dully somewhere for any possible future blog-posts about Lore or so.

Kinda disappointing, but we also kinda knew it was coming. Anything that even has the possibility of being future content probably can’t be discussed in-depth, because there is always the possibility they might want to change their minds on it later.

Worse comes to worse, and we still want some answers on some things, we can always try and get Angel to the forums again, and ask her what she can discuss. She was nice and helpful the last time she was here, and I’m sure we were all grateful for her taking the time to answer our questions. Though, I’m not sure what would be the best way to get her attention. Simply asking her, or an elaborate dark ritual requiring a stone alter, blood of a virgin, a full moon, and a pint of her favorite brand of premium ice cream?

It’s hard to resist the pull of free Ben and Jerry’s or Haagen-Dazs.

For what it’s worth, I still enjoyed getting to know more about the culture and customs of the various races. (So, there has never been an Asura marriage in history? Ever? Wow.)

I’m rather surprised that the Ogres have no interest (maybe even a concept?) in the spiritual world or an afterlife. That raises further questions of what happens when an Ogre dies? Do the other Ogres simply leave the body where it fell and speak no more of the dead individual? Or are they morbidly pragmatic and ritually consume the dead/feed them to their pets? (I’m more inclined to believe the latter.)

So, there has never been an Asura marriage in history? Ever? Wow.

Er… you should re-read the answer. He was explaining what a marriage for asura is. That is, that there are such. Though it’s just treated a bit differently than humans.

Jeff made asura marriages to sound more like a contract to be honest… But there’s supposedly emotions such as the mysterious one called “love” involved.

I think Edge of Destiny features a chief having a funeral for his son.

Mmm, true. I interpreted his answer to mean that no two Asura have ever been in a lifelong committed relationship to each other. I suppose it could have happened; it’s just that Asura do not have “weddings” as such. More than likely there’s some Asuran couples who simply have a "committed interpersonal union with <X> with an automatic renewal period at 5 year intervals, unless the “Divorce” clause is activated".

Asura do have weddings:

“A Norn wedding is all fine and well, but if you want to see a real party, you should see an Asuran wedding! No one is allowed to leave until a precise calculation is made for how much love is in the air. Nothing says ‘I love you’ like complex algorithms!”

Just checked. Nothing there about funeral rites, just that ogres don’t burn their dead, and that the chief took taking vengeance for his son so seriously he attempted to storm Ebonhawke… though rather that’s a common cultural response or simply the reaction of a given individual isn’t addressed.

Most of the interview was lame. The only good stuff in there was about the centaurs, the OoW’s globe, the Six Gods (although we knew it more or less, there was still a little bit more elaboration in Jeff’s answer), and the one about the wizard towers…

C’mon, it’s the very first time since maybe GW1 that they mentioned the Ascalonian tower! I really hope it escaped the charr (even if a bit damaged by the Searing) and now it’s somewhere safe and secret.

I’m honored that they picked my question on the Six…but it was really a half answer. Yes, it was nice to know that Abbadon was the last thing keeping the Gods here. But I suppose my real question was: “If they stepped back themselves, why did they willingly leave their power bound to the world where the dragons could corrupt it?” And as a follow up: “Does their power being corrupted by the dragons have any effect on them?”

Seems to me that they could have taken their power to the mists with them and prevented Zhaitan from twisting all the statues and priests. So why didn’t they? What control do they have over the bits of their power that was twisted. Could they have pulled that power away from the statues and priests once Zhaitan had it?

I made my question less specific in hopes of getting an answer. It worked…but now I wish I’d gone into more detail.
