Does lore matter?
In order:
- The writer(s) don’t care about continuity.
- Yes, it does matter. Each continuity has its own rules, and the rules of the continuity is as the writer makes it, but if the writer goes back on their own rules, then what is the point of making rules in the first place?
- Sometimes. It requires either lampshading, fridge logic, and general plot twists to work in most cases.
- I think the entirety of the audience who pays attention to the story cares.
- Bad. They need to improve her, not perform retroactive continuity (aka “retcon”) on her.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
it is absolutely possible for stories to recover and thrive. Look at how much the warhammer universe has changed and evolved throughout the years.
On a side note, for any story to stay alive without stagnating, it is going to need to change and evolve in some way shape or form. Some won’t be happy by how much it does while others will but there is no concrete answer about how much change is “okay”. The only real “arbitrary” indicator will be whether or not the general public accepts the story and the business continues to make money.
I just can’t believe they did it again…I know these things are in the works for months…but they’ve known the hatred of Scarlett for way longer…how could they do this to us….AGAIN!?! :‘( Another golden opportunity to give the community something its been begging for, for the better part of a year now….a good lore story. I doubt I’ll ever get my hopes up again.

So are you implying she would have been seen in the Abbadon fractal?
Listen, I actually like Scarlet, but Christ enough is enough Bobby. Either give us a bit of a break from her, or hurry and finish her arch.
I stand corrected. And I’m sorry for my outburst, its just frustrating.

That makes sense…I suppose the story is among the first things to be developed and once it gets underway, ít’s basically too late to change things.
I’m curious though…has the player feedback regarding Scarlet affected your upcoming lore?
Listen, I actually like Scarlet, but Christ enough is enough Bobby. Either give us a bit of a break from her, or hurry and finish her arch.
No. No break from her. Just make her plot more believable and less tied to everything that happens. We had a break from her, it was September. And it was a terrible time for a break from her because we just got introduced to her and had no time to gain any good points to counter-act all her negatives.
What we need is an update which gives us those good points. And sadly, this update just feels like shoehorning Scarlet in and leads players to wonder if Scarlet would have somehow been shoehorned into the Fall of Abaddon fractal.
Honestly, there was no reason to add Scarlet to Thaumanova from the start. Though at least that’s a bit more believable since she had history with Inquest.
And, again honestly, I don’t think people would have nearly half as much of an issue with her if she wasn’t made out to be so smart. If she had no ties to Biegarth or Asagari (or w/e the charr sniper’s name was) and if she didn’t graduate from all three colleges but instead just had ties to the hylek and Inquest, I bet folks would love her far more. Her insanity caused by Inquest experimentation which she unwittingly volunteered for while working with the Inquest. That would have been far more interesting. And the second thing that could have been done better is explaining why her alliances work out so well – perhaps she was using Inquest contacts or the Grizzwhirl to get them to work for her.
What we get instead is “she can do anything,” no explanation for why her alliances work so well, gets put into being responsible for the biggest Inquest disaster of all time, and perhaps worse of all, is both obviously crazy to the point where people must wonder how she gets anything done, yet somehow is so loved that everyone can’t help but work for/with her. It’s almost like she has split personalities, and one is shown to us only offscreen.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

That must have been some kind of private hell, sitting through the entire CDI-Living Story thread knowing – knowing for 4 months now – that Scarlet’s next trick would be to reduce the players themselves into her next band of mindless minions.
I’d say the debacle of the Leafy-Messiah of Chaos is now complete… except is its not. We’re still not into any sort of endgame/resolution, are we?

We look at as much feedback as we’re able and take it under consideration when planning our updates. Understand that what you’re seeing on live was under way four months prior.
I think ANet needs to fire Bobby and everyone else on the lore team right now and rethink everything they’re doing, because Bobby and his buddies only know one way to advance the “plot” at this point:
SCARLET DID IT.Everyone is tired of it. The few who aren’t never give any good reasons they like Scarlet beyond “lol shes crazy crazy is kewl”
Hey, Dott. I get that you’re passionate about the game and that you’re not a fan of Scarlet but you’re not living up to the collaborative spirit of the forums. I’d take your feedback a lot more seriously if you weren’t so hostile and personal with your comments. Let’s keep things civil here.

not to offend… but if it just started then you had enough time to look for a plan b.
You know it was a risky undertaking and then you could see how it all grew even more over the last few months… How about pulling the emergency break on something like that?
I know it is a tight shedule. A lot of pressure, but something like this?
Hey, i start to get Scarlet (even though i am totally frustrated by the pesentation of her and the stroy progression etc… ) so i can be a bit linient, but…
Do you really, really have no Plan B? Nothing?
We just came out of the Tower of Nightmare totally baffled by the payoff. The CDI got us a clear indication that Scarlet didn`t work as intended and even the Lore Forum went as far as to vent their anger in a dedicated Thread (as well as a more cooperational thread, but nonetheless).
Giving us Scarlet again in something that we the player have chosen based on the mystery behind it. Because we were genuinly interested in what the connection here was with the elder dragons and then she appears again?
I am sorry, i know it is hard. it is your work, you want it to succeed, so you push it, but if you (and the other developers) have seen the signs, why don`t you act?
She does not have to be everywhere…
I actually love scarlet, i’m trully curious about what all of this will lead too, now we know that she was present in the world waaay before the molten alliance and with he talking about dragon energies i can say this will lead to a grand finalle related to actual dragon lore, which imo will be cool! Also the eternal alchemy fascinates me and i kinda wanna know how it ends. Just don’t overextended it much from this points.
Spoilers
Also, Dessa is related to the inquest? didn’t know that, and what questions does Ellen has to ask her, and what about the letter we got from Rox?
And to finalise what the hell was that thing at the end of the fractal, 6 eyes, 1 core and cosmic energy?
collaborative spirit of the forums
Hahahaha. But seriously. The quicker you kill off scarlet the better. I’m sure you’ve gotten enough feedback to do a less awful job next time.
It’s cool that Bobby responded to this thread a few times, I appreciate that. At this point I’ve stopped getting frustrated with Scarlet and I’m just embracing her and all her flaws now.
I’m really curious though, if we had gotten the Abaddon fractal, would Scarlet still be involved? I’m starting to think the elections really were rigged, I just don’t see how Scarlet could have anything to do with Abaddon.
Bobby, if you are able to clarify what the Abaddon fractal contained, that would be pretty cool. Thanks.
Fractal work started back in August, which is when players first encountered Scarlet and around when the votes were tallied.
The devs have explained more than once that they plan the living story updates months ahead, so any changes they make based on our feedback take a few months to be brought live.
To be honest, I think we’re just going to have some very awkward months ahead of us. The whole long-term Scarlet plot has been planned out long before she first appeared and before the playerbase began to manifest their overwhelming distaste for her – myself included.
Now the devs are fully aware not only of how disliked Scarlet is, but also of how poor of a character she appears to be. I’d wager they’re not awfully happy with her either. However, at this point, it’s simply too late to change course and give another direction to the living story. So let’s just brace ourselves and endure Scarlet for the next few updates and hope it will all be somewhat wrapped up together at the end.
This would give a lot of people peace of mind, Bobby, I hope you respond: is the end of Scarlet’s arch already on its way? It’s been a year almost. No offensse, but honestly no one cares anymore about her, we just want to end it and move on with more interesting things. We’re frustrated and kittened off. A lot, myself included, don’t even care about playing anymore.
Those are not signs of a happy community, nor of an interesting and compelling story.

I mentioned this elsewhere on the forums, but I’ll say it here again. There is an end to the Scarlet story that has been planned out. I’m not at liberty to discuss release dates or the timeline, though.

You do not speak for the community. And you certainly don’t speak for me. So please stop spouting the same, tired complaints. They have been said many times before. The team is constantly on the forums, evaluating the feedback.
Further, the way that the story is told is partly a design issue as well. The writers can come up with a captivating story, but if it’s paced incorrectly throughout the updates (based on how the designers want to implement it), then we have hiccups or unnecessary stalls.
So much unanswered questions were left in GW1, I hoped GW2 would tie up the loose ends, but, unfortunately that isn’t happening.
Feedback? Go check the thread of people asking for Cantha with 1700 posts. So many amazing ideas.

Just make sure she’s vaporized and her soul tossed into the sun, so there’s no possible way she can be resurrected.
Just a small tip – After the death of Zhaitain we got Dragon Bash.
I think that once Scarlet is dealt with we should get an EVEN BIGGER event than Dragon Bash. Because I am pretty sure everyone wants to take a whack at that pinata..

Feel free to not include yourself in what I bolded. I am part of the community and see how the majority of it feels towards this every day, so I will say what I think and I will voice out my opinion if I want to. Never said I spoke for it, nor that I spoke for you.

Out of curiosity do you feel the scarlet story is progressing as you intended? For example do you feel happy with the content so far? Should we be holding our breath for something with a little more meaning?
Hi Bobby.
To even show up in a thread like this, where people are openly hostile to you and your team, man you have guts. For that, I commend you, in that you’re not afraid to read and converse with your most passionate critics, head on.
My only disdain with lore in this update, is that discussion of the lore is being stifled because of the Scarlet Hate. There are IMO much more interesting reveals this update that are just utterly buried by the never-ending stream of scarlet vitriol.
I don’t know what is more sad, if the votations of Cutthroat Politics were rigged to implement Taumanova with this salad, aka Scarlet, or if they had a plan to include her anyway in the Abaddon fractal…
I think the majority of the playerbase really want to DESTROY her right now, at this very moment.
Now, my personal opinion as a GW1 veteran, why not use the fantastic lore you guys created on that game? I know you want this to be another game, not just more of the same but:
- Why not fight the other dragons? Have they been sleeping this whole year or what?
- Why not include Cantha? With Zhaitan’s death the sea block his army made should be broken so we can travel to Kaineng again.
- Why not include Crystal Dessert/Elona? Let’s go fight Kralkatorrik now since he killed Snaff and Destiny’s Edge are together again. Why not ask Palawa Joko for help (again) and play with his tricky nature?
- Why not expand the story of the Far North? Again, we got our teleport stone to Hall of Monuments, but we didn’t get any explanation about its origins.
- Why not play around with the story of remaining Mursaat and Scepter of Orr?
Instead of all those things we, the Dragonslayers, get to fight a crazy sylvari for a whole year meanwhile dragons are destroying everything everywhere…. seems legit.

I have to agree, the Thaumanova Story especially was really interesting. Ellen’s conversation with Dessa was great (both before and after). I really enjoyed a lot of the small hints about Dessa and it’s really cool to see that she’s quite possibly been in the mists for a while. Also the final boss in that particular fractal was just really interesting and I look forward to being to find out anything about what exactly it is! Yes Scarlet was in the Fractal, but even if she has had some sort of influence on what took place at Thaumanova I think it’s still important to recognise that the advancements and knowledge to be gained from it are purely Asuran (maybe?).
I think that Scarlet has a lot of potential. She is a fun, interesting villain and definitely different from anyone else in the game. I feel like the flaw isn’t with Scarlet as a character but more with the very long arch and lack of meaningful story.
What is Scarlet ultimately trying to do?
What drives her to do this?
I like Scarlet, but she’s been around a long time and I feel like I still don’t know who she is or why she’s doing what she is.
Most importantly to me is that Scarlet has taken the light of the entire game. Zhaitan was a pushover fight and I desperately hope he is getting reworked, but regardless there are still at least four elder dragons out there who should still feel like a threat. For a game where the story is supposed to be about these races banding together to take down dragons I feel like there is zero dragon threat, and that’s something that I’d like to see explored more before we worry about some crazy sylvari who is mad for reasons that no one really knows.
Hey now, it was not Bobby who hyped the Thaumanova Reactor it was our good friend Anthony Ordon.
I wonder what kinds of things would happen if you mixed the Mists with chaos energy…
It matters, but we all pretty much know exactly what happened at the Mouth of Torment.
Nobody knows what happened at Thaumanova…yet.
To shed some light on my bias, our team brainstormed up a bunch of fractals for you guys to pick from and then we settled on the best two. I got pretty excited about Thaumanova, given what we intend for it to entail so I’m Kiel supporter all the way.
Abbadon will also be great if Evon wins though.
He also admitted that Arena Net had retcon out the idea that there was once a Cantha District in Divinities Reach post launch of GW2.
So, I’m not going to spoil anything but I’d like to take this opportunity to remind you guys that according to game lore, there was never a Canthan district. If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that the great collapse was formally an arts district.
Just a final quick note, I’m certainly not denying that at one point a Canthan district was planned and partially implemented. But the actual lore of the district that the game shipped doesn’t support it very well right now.
I think it’s great that you guys are fans of Cantha and I would personally like to see it in the game as well. But what you’ll be finding under that tent (very soon) is not Canthan. I’m just making assumptions here, but if we did return to Cantha I suspect it would be a really big deal, way too big to fit under the even largest of tents, or even in an existing city at all.
Though in Anthony’s defense he probably did not how much people would end up loathing Scarlet in the near future.
(edited by Sindex.9520)
I personally, can’t understand why is Arena Net is not listening to their community.
The feedback is there, the suggestions are there.
That feedback ranges from “kill her off and leave a giant lore hole” to “Scrap everything you had planned with her being a major player and make her a minor villain”. Who’s idea should they listen to? And after they decide who’s to listen to, how many months should we wait for them to make the new content concerning her? And how much longer should we wait for a new living story plot?

I don’t know which idea they should follow, but there is one thing that is really clear: the majority of people don’t want her, being for one reason or for another totally different.

There’s a couple problems here:
1. Mostly only unhappy people voice their opinions so we don’t really know if there is a majority of unhappy people.
2. Any other change that isn’t backed by the majority (who already can’t agree on what they want) is going to have the same problem of the majority of people not being happy.
So picking anything else is pointless unless we know that it’s what the majority does want.

Not really. I don’t want even more events dedicated to her. I’d rather see her to be completely forgotten. She doesn’t deserve anything more.

For that simple reason, they should scrap out all the feedback because they will never know if it comes from the majority….
I think that there are some hints that let them know that we are a majority: metrics on forums (# of topics and posts on them about getting rid of Scarlet for example), logging into the game and ask on LA, you will get a really low number of people who likes her…)

Again. Complaint posts aren’t an indicator becaue it preselects the opinions. Businesses learned this back when Coke-a-cola had to go back to Coke Classic. The only real indicator here is whether or not they are continuing to make money. if so, there is no problem until there is a problem.

So you’ve identified a potential problem. What is your solution for a fix? Otherwise it’s “out of the frying pan, into the fire”.

Release a new LS each month.
I think the Scarlet story with what we know this far would be fine as a side story. I’m in the camp of GW1 players that is getting tired of “new” lore. We’ve had almost a year with this story, but so far it has not tied into any established lore. Why spend so much time and effort on a story where you have to keep coming up with new Lore? There is so much lore established in GW1 and introduced in the GW2 personal story that is just sitting there…basically rotting away. I can almost guarantee that if you Devs would make new content based on established lore, you would have much more positive responses and you would keep those who have been Guild Wars faithful much longer.
GW1 ended with the awakening of the Elder Dragons. Everything leading up to the release of GW2 was about the Elder Dragons. Many of us bought this game to continue that story. Yet, here we are, over a year later, and all the living story content has had zero direct correlation with the Elder Dragons. Please, go back to your roots. There’s no reason to try and reinvent the wheel. If it ain’t broke, don’t mess with it. Improve it, but don’t change it into something else completely different.
Please, I beg of you, go back to the established lore. If Scarlet is supposed to, speed it up. Give us something.

+1
I think they can stick to the 2 weeks release schedule, but they need to stop attaching to every release a piece of LS. Just release whatever new feature is planned every 2 weeks and release a new LS content every month.
Regardless of how tired “some” of you are with Scarlet, there is no way that she is going to be leaving before her pre-planned story arc is set to be completed. It has already been made clear to us that there are story segments set to be released with planned content releases. Content, that more than likely has already been started. Just let her story arc play out and relax.
Also, it is not that “Scarlet did it”, the actual ongoing question is “What is Scarlet doing?”. Because really, we have no clue! So each content release we WILL get information about something Scarlet is doing. Should be no surprise whatsoever that she is involved with something in the story, she is the story!
I do agree with recent assessments about story depth per release. I hope that the next major story arc for the Living World will feature a bigger story segment with each content release. Something that I doubt is possible for this story-arc, given that it has been planned out and divided up into content releases already.
I also really like how content releases have had a little bit of overlap in terms of changes in game that we are given no information about, that then tie directly into upcoming releases.
Are these strange energy devices tapping into dragon energy? If so, how does Scarlet plan on manipulating said energy. Better yet, what will the consequences be for doing so.
Quality over quantity.
Release a new LS each month.
Sounds good. let’s here some content ideas. because that’s all that the devs can actually use from these forums. But I would caution you, the breaks in the current LS arch have only brought up cries of “GW is becoming a funhouse”. And when content disappears too soon for eveyones liking, there is more cries of “We want to revisit the content”.

You didn’t really. Yes, abandoning and/or retconning the story at this point would cause problems, that’s true, but it’s not like continuing with it would be any less problematic. That is however only in the short term. Abandonment of the storyline at this moment offers some chance to salvage what they can in order for the story to eventually get better again. Leaving Scarlet as she is, however, creates a minefiels all future storylines will have to walk on. And if they are unwilling to correct situation now, they will be even less likely to manage to do it later.

Scarlet could have been just removed from the Fractal with minimal cost, as her presence there is pretty much an “added value” to the main content of the dungeon. And there was enough time to do that – devs should have been aware that using her would be a bad choice no later than halfway through the design process. At the worst case, fast-pulling of her avatar and scripts could have been done in days, without the need to modify anything else. It certainly would not have introduced any bugs more visible than those that are already there.

Bolded describes how I did. All you’ve just said now is that a-net should come up with something that everyone can get behind (….great idea). But we already know from forum posts that there is currently no idea that the majority of fans have rallied behind.

I would like to start off by saying i LOVED finally getting to get into the reactor and see what happened! I’m absolutely ecstatic by how it went down (granted i felt scarlet was rather forced into it), and i’m also loving you being in the lore forums!! This is probably the forum i read the most so i’m excited to finally start seeing some red in here =D!
That being said, I’m extremely intrigued about Dessa and her inability to leave the mistlock labs, I really wanna see that expanded on, and what is even more curious to me is the Anomaly at the end of the Reactor, very curious…
