I just started thinking about all the elder dragons in GW2 and all of them represent an element. That got me thinking of the Bijuu in Naruto, Sage of the six paths scattered the original Bijuu into 9 bijuus to reduce the power of it. What if the gods already fought the elder dragons once and scattered them around the world to reduce its power. Maybe this dragon was the creator of the world? an organism that created all, kinda like the aftereffects of a big bang.

The dragons are actually as strong as the gods if not stronger in some of the dragons case. Also the god’s actually weren’t aware of the dragons when they first step foot here(their intention in coming here was to bring humanity to saftey which if they were aware of the dragons is counter productive). when they split the bloodstones they drew power from an unknown source(zhaitan) to do the act and they showed no visible sign of even knowing the dragons were there.

Take into account that human gods are not the sort of “world creators” gods. They’re powerful entities with huge loads of power, but not everything happened because of them. Dragons in fact were there before the arrival of the gods so that theory wouldn’t be possible. They’re described as forces of nature, and they aren’t friendly to each other so I doubt they’re part of the same original dragon.

My personal theory is that they’re a bit like FF7 weapons (the name of a type of powerful creature), the world response to a threat. They are forces of nature that consume magic, and it’s very possible that they’re Tyria’s way to balance the amount of magic in the world before it becomes too dangerous. If the bloodstones didn’t exist I would even say that killing them might be dangerous to the world in the very long term.

Well, from what we can tell the Bloodstones do not pull in more magic, they just contain the magic from back when they were created. I say this because of the fact that we have Ritualists who were around before Abaddon released magic. So I do not believe the bloodstones would help balance the magic in the world, it was just a one time thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if your theory holds some truth, though, and the races have to find some way to slow the growth of magic in Tyria. At the same time though, the rate at which magic grows in Tyria means that there really isn’t much worry for perhaps another few hundred years. It comes in more like a trickle than anything else.

Magic naturally returning to the world and the Elder Dragons being a natural means of using it up has been my theory on them for a while. And an extension of my theory is that the Elder Dragons are made from magic too – mainly from Glint’s description of Kralkatorrik which is “more magical than physical” as well as Kralkatorrik turning into a living sandstorm at will as if his physical body is merely a representation… and Jormag may be the same, as he’s described as a living blizzard though this may be more metaphorical given Zhaitan’s lack of turning into something (kind of disappointing he didn’t turn into an altered version of the Plague skill, but with thousands of tiny dragons instead of insects). Under such theorycrafting, I believe that the Elder Dragons are specifically formed from large amounts of condensed magic that gains sentience through infecting living beings and they eventually make these draconic-looking bodies (if you really look at Zhaitan and the champions on a whole, it really seems to me that them being dragons is a coincidental (in lore) thing).

So, in full, my theory is this:

Given other various facts, I suspect that the previous Elder Dragon rises were in approx. 10,000 BE, 6,000 BE, and 2,000 BE (this is mostly based off of a line from Seiran saying the oldest dwarven ruins are "over 2,000 years old – an odd number if the last rise was 10,000 BE as otherwise told – as well as the timeline date for Forgotten to have arrived on Tyria being 1,768 BE – there’s more, such as jotun seemingly survived multiple rises which seems unlikely if its every 11,000 years). Because of the Bloodstones, the Elder Dragons, who always previously devoured all/almost all magic in the world, starved without consuming all magic and went into hibernation. Thanks to the Six Gods unleashing magic, the Elder Dragons woke up early (having an approx. 2,000 year sleep rather than 4,000 year sleep) because there’s more magic in the world sooner. Now, if the Elder Dragons are killed off, there will be no reduction means of magic. And I suspect that high magical concentration is a bad thing – even if just natural magic, as such things tend to be at places like Ring of Fire and the like. So as magic increases, so will natural phenomena that causes problems… until new Elder Dragons are born. And the cycle repeats itself once more.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
