Halloween Gargoyles are related to Nightmares
Erm, There are no Coldfire Nights in GW2, so we can’t be certain what they would look like on this platform. As to Griffons, yes they look the same, but that is more likely to be related to sharing the same model than anything else, and it doesn’t mean that they are related to Nightmares. What I want to know is whether the Halloween Gargoyles in GW2 are related to the Gargoyles seen throughout Ascalon in GW1, and why/how they went into the Mad Realm.
Maybe they were emmisarys of the Mad King and whatever stopped the Mad King from showing up on Halloween sent them back to the Mad Realm where they belonged(though it seems they absorbed either Balthazar energies or Destroyer corruption in the process).
You are in the lore section, so I will give you a lore answer cause I believe the looks are decieving and a re-used model when the name is more important.
The mad king has many servants among them long lost creatures brought back to life.
There was a time that gargoyles roamed the lands of Tyria, both in kryta and in ascalon. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Gargoyles
The origin was unknown but more surprising is the way they left. according to legend in 1185 AE they all dissapeared without a trace. So the looks are not susprising, but what are they doing as mad king thorns servants while they have dissappeared???!!!!
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Thorn could have created them.
Yes, but in GW1 there was absolutely nothing connecting them to Thorn. In GW1 we only visited one part of the Mad Realm, but this quests most others and such had to do with either Candy Corn elementals or Undead (either fighting Joko’s Undead or dealing with his undead servants). It wasn’t until GW2 that there was any connection, but that connection is only in name, because of the fact that the models used for Gargoyles in GW1 vs those used in GW2 are DRASTICALLY different, which leads many to believe that it is just a similar name, and nothing more.

Also, the model used in GW2 for the other type of Gargoyle is more like a Rock dog model than a Coldfire Night which had more of a reptilian look.

The Gargoyle dog model is a Branded Rock Dog recolored. They just changed the purple to orange/red.
I don’t think there’s any similarity with the Tyrian gargolyes – creatures of stone that liked to climb things – and the Nightmares – which are, as best as I can figure out, evil spirits of sorts. Now, whether or not there’s a connection between the Halloween gargoyles and either of the above is another matter. It could be that they’re the creatures of stone and simply got a major redesign, no different than the kraken (aka Jade Maw in GW2) did. Or it could be that Nightmares are no longer solely black and makes a “whish” sound when struck with physical weapons.
I’m doubting that last bit, personally.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Well the differentiation in the Kraken (Jade Maw) could just be a flawed creation of the mists rather than a representation of Krakens in Tyria. Of course the same could be said of the Gargoyles in the Mad Realm being replicas of the Gargoyles of Tyria created within the mists, which is why their form is different from those that we knew. Of course none of this explains the mysterious disappearance, but it’s a possibility.
Honestly I just thing the change of appearance = new design, no lore reason at all, lets be honest original gargoyles were not fun to look at. I will say that im having a hard time coming up with any other creature than changed appearance of the same magnitude as the gargoyles though.
^— It’s much more likely to be that they had to re-use models because they couldn’t justify creating a brand new model just for one creature for halloween (believe it or not there is actually a lot of effort and human resources that goes into modelling, animating and texturing a creature). If/When Gargoyles are reintroduced in a more substantial way I am sure they will develop a more fitting model.
Wouldn’t be the first time they’ve done such, I believe – certainly not where they’ve went and retroactively upgraded old models (the Losaru centaurs in GW1 originally looked akin to the Maguuma or Shiverpeak centaurs (forget which, may have been unique models with same design), but with Nightfall they were “updated” to have the commonplace Elonian centaur models.

Is it just me or do Rock Dogs look like beefed up Gargoyles?

How did I not notice that their design was changed
I <3’d the Losaru the first time I saw them. My memory is quite possibly entirely wrong but I feel like I remember them having a unique texture and they were sort of Zebra patterned or something. That’s depressing that they changed the model with NF’s release -_-
They were certainly not black and white. Not sure of striped but they were brown primarily.
