I just started to RP here on Tarnished Coast, and I was wondering how much Lore I have to know in order to start RPing here. Do I have to know all of the events of Guild wars 1 (I already know a bit of the summary, watched WoodenPotatoes Videos on it), and every detail on what happened? Or would just a simple summary be enough for me to get started RPing. And, what would be a good place for me to learn the lore nessesary to RP?

Thanks in advance.

This is probably a better question to ask on http://guildwars2roleplayers.com/ than here in the lore forums.

I’m not a big rp’er, but I’d say “enough to make your character work without breaking canon” – everything else could simply be a case of your character not knowing about it.

A word of the wise: WoodenPotatoes videos (especially the discussion videos rather than the ones animated with unique art) are not the best source. In fact, I’d hardly call them a source at all. They’re a decent introduction and people (not me) seem to like his voice, but he mixes and melds theories and speculations with fact quite often (especially in his old videos at least), without any real differentiating of them in any way or form. And on top of that, I’ve seen something said completely wrong in almost every video of his I’ve watched – minor or major. They’re good, but not something to rely on solely.

As for a good place to learn lore? GWW has articles that are full and up-to-date as of GW1’s perspective of lore (some articles also including GW2’s perspective, but those are rare and few). Keep in mind that some things from GW1 has been proven “false legends” by GW2. Sadly, GW2W is severly lacking in lore articles, and some are also incorrect, but the blog posts that were put up and the language articles are worth reading.

There are other articles, but they’re probably best read at a personal interest search or the like. If there’s a topic you want to know for help developing your character, feel free to ask.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

The links Konig provided are good. And since your character doesn’t need to be a world history scholar, you have a bit of wiggle room. I’d sat concentrate your search into the lore of your own race, also on the wiki. That way you won’t constantly get corrected by being a half norn or anything the devs already said is impossible. Once you have that, you might like to post your character bio in the lore forum here or the forum of your chosen race and invite critiques. You may here a lot about the tendancies of any race but keep in mind you don’t have to be a carbon copy quintiscential poster child of your race. Also, you don’t have to be the million in one exception either. Whichever way you lean, have fun

Keep in mind that GW1 lore was created 250 years ago and ask yourself wich moment in history you know that happened round 1750 AD?? Do you think it is important to know the details bout the 1763 Treaty of Paris?? or that there was a treaty??

Some historical facts do matter but you dont have to know details.

I haven’t had a chance to RP yet in GW2 but from what I see if your a newbie one thing you should do to start out in be a human and RP from there and try to learn as you go. The game tells you what happened to the human kingdom in the opening and the humans are really the only common thing in place of this world. Also if you where picking a class try to keep your character’s story in line with that class.

Just don’t skip the cinematics from your character creation and your personal story.
And listen to the scouts as you complete the maps.
You don’t need more lore than that.

The glory of my ancestors shall be restored.
