Hylek vs Krait
Karl Marx: “Go away! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!”
Hylek being hylek, my guess is that she is talking about her tribe, not her race. The hylek tribes of northern Caledon seem to be loosely tied together by the Sun’s great beasts, and they are spaced out around the bay, so it’s possible that her tribe had no real foreign enemies until the krait moved in.
The krait moved in en-masse due to the rise of the dragons, but they were around beforehand. In Guild Wars 1, the krait lived in the jungles and swamps, albeit a far less-evolved and more animalistic form of krait.
Yeah, 200 years is enough to make a group your “oldest enemies”. I mean yeah humanity went to war and took over charr lands, but humans probably didn’t look at them as true enemies until they started taking things back over. That would make them the most bitter of enemies in a very short time-period. As a professor of mine once said, “Rivalries slowly disappear on the winning side, but the hold tight on the side that loses”
Sorry about the bump, but I just successfully completed the defense event following the one mentioned in the OP. The distrustful chief opens up a little, and he mentions that the interactions between his tribe and the krait are recent, and that, as I speculated earlier, his tribe had no enemies before then.
