So is abaddon dead or alive? I keep getting told different things that kormir has his powers but his soul is imprisoned. That Kormir absorbed his powers and he is dead. That is his completely alive and just imprisoned. That he died and was resurrected in the mists. Can somone please explain it to me? I looked up the wiki but people in game keep saying its incorrect and I just don’t know what to believe.

Abaddon was the god of secrets and the depths. He was imprisoned in the Realm of Torment, and in time he went mad and became a menace. During the events of Nightfall Kormir, who was a sunspear general gained the blessing of the other 5 gods that effectively made her be able to take on his power.

Abaddon was defeated in the Realm of Torment, and his power kinda lashed out, threatening to destroy everything, but then Kormir basically ran in and absorbed the power and became the new goddess of truth. Abaddon’s will was broken and his power was taken. Supposedly its as good as dead.

Except that another example of a god being usurped similarly is Dhuum (former god of death very much against resurrection of any kind) being usurped by Grenth, and Dhuum as it turns out is very much alive and even has some power in the Underworld.
And now coming to Balthazar it seems a defeated god drained of its power can still very much be a threat. Why we havent heard about Abaddon’s comeback? Probably because that story is done and ANet wouldnt want to beat a dead horse and redo the same story over and over again.

“Being resurrected in the Mists”… I dont know where that option comes from. Kinda makes me think of Razah who was an unfinished creation of Abaddon created in the Realm of Torment (which is part of the Mists as every realm really), but I dont see what that has to do with Abaddon’s supposed resurrection.

It is important to point out the distinction that while Dhuum (and possibly Balthazaar) were “usurped” (i.e. their power was reduced and someone else became the god of their sphere), Abaddon was killed and then had his power absorbed.

By this logic, plus other speculation on my part, would it not be possible that Balthazar is not actually Balthazar, but Abaddon in disguise?

From the GW1 wiki it sounds like he was trying to coalesce his essence into form, hence his appearance as a disembodied head and hands. Maybe the bloodstone explosion provided energy to do something like this, generating an under-powered bodily form, especially in the context he was drained of power in his prior defeat. It might also explain why he had access to Lyssa’s mirror given what we now know regarding Siren’s landing, how he kept various relics from all the gods safe and had such an easy time accessing these vaults (or getting others to do so for him).

Earlier in the season there was also a letter that referred to Balthazar (supposedly?) as “master” … which struck me as an odd turn of phrase, but doesn’t mean much. I dunno why he would throw off the Lazarous disguise for a Balthazar one, though.

Considering other speculation I saw elsewhere regarding how Abaddon may have known about dragon magic, and utilized it, previously, could explain his willingness to hunt down and drain the dragons of power. Is there anything to suggest Balthazar, other than being a god, would be so fully capable in the realm of magic energy manipulation and the use of various relics not his own?

I’m not a lore hound, so this is just unsubstantiated ruminating for funzies!

Abaddon is dead. The devs have said such time and time again.

His soul was imprisoned, after the Exodus in Year 0, but in 1075 AE he began building a new body and invaded Tyria (world) during the events of Nightfall, at the end of which everything left of Abaddon – his power, will, and probably soul – was absorbed into Kormir.

At the end, neither Abaddon nor Kormir of old really exists anymore, and what’s in place is a combination of the two – Kormir’s body, knowledge, and will, Abaddon’s power and knowledge.

Abaddon “dying and resurrecting in the Mists” is 100% a fan fiction that has been debunked by ArenaNet. People tend to deny canon lore if it fits their fanon though.

The only god still imprisoned – to the best of our knowledge – is Dhuum. But hints indicate he broke free in the past 250 years.

Dhuum’s overthrow is a different matter from Abaddon’s, as his body was not destroyed and his will not absorbed. We don’t know why it’s different, presumably it’s because Grenth was a demi-god already or perhaps it’s because Dhuum was the god of death thus rules of death cannot apply to him even when he loses his divinity.

Balthazar is indeed Balthazar – ArenaNet even alluded to the idea of him being someone else in Draconis Mons. To paraphrase the NPC to the best of my memory: “Someone pretending to be a god pretending to be a mursaat? That’s just ridiculous.” And Kasmeer even confirmed that he had no illusion left on him when he revealed himself. So if that isn’t Balthazar, then it needs to be someone who can physically disguise himself as the god of war and fire, and can physically use fire without any aid of objects. Which seems highly unlikely (maybe Menzies, but he was always about darkness and suffocation of fire, rather than about fire).

As to “Abaddon may have known about dragon magic” we know for a fact that all six gods knew about the Elder Dragons. This got confirmed and referenced multiple times in Season 2. A third of what Tyrians know of the Elder Dragons come from the “Tome of the Five True Gods”, in fact (the other two thirds coming from jotun and dwarven texts).

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

It is unknown. We “destroyed” Abaddon at the conclusion of Nightfall. Then again, we “killed” Shiro earlier in the story, only to see him return twice.

I personally expect to learn that Abbadon is back or attempting to be back.

In fantasy, there is a big difference between “destroyed” and “killed”, especially when there is necromancy in the setting.

Schrodinger’s God. He’s not dead or alive until we check on him.
Interesting note, though, I noticed one of the traits in the upcoming scourge mentioned being able to temporarily step into the Realm of Torment. Not the Realm of secrets, or whatever Kormir is claiming these days. It’s good to see Kormir kept Abaddon’s room just the way he left it, but do you think there might be a reason for it?

Edit: searched Reddit for a related image. It wasn’t a trait. It was the scourge Elite skill. Either way : https://i.redd.it/uwg4kdtj7cdz.jpg

This isn’t the first time we got referenced to the Realm of Torment in modern times as opposed to the Redeemed Realm. There is no lore as to why it didn’t change despite the not-entirely-canon dat description that we got Redeemed Realm from.
