On the GW2 wiki page I was reading some things on the ELona page and happened across this:

“Approximately fifty years ago, another wave of Elonian refugees came into Tyria, escaping the ravages of Palawa Joko. Access to Elona is barred off by way of the Desert Gate – the primary land route into the Crystal Desert – having been sealed under Queen Jennah’s order due to a dark presence in the desert. Only the Order of Whispers has knowledge of how to travel to Elona in modern times.” -

Either it’s worded weirdly, but it talks about how 50 years ago, which I assume is 50 years before the present time in game, about a wave of refugees, then goes right into about Queen Jennah sealed it off with the gate. So did she seal it 50 years ago as queen? How long has she been queen then? How old is she?

I have been researching the calendar and have found out about the 360 day years, with 4 seasons. But not much on how long a day is and things. So what do you people think? Cause this is confusing me, probably more than it should? How different does time work in Tyria compared to the real world we know?

I think it’s just worded weirdly.

The way I would read it is that refugees came to Tyria fifty years ago, and then some unspecified amount of time later Queen Jennah ordered the sealing. I think it just needed more of a transition than was written there, when it switches from past to more-or-less present. (Notice the switch to “is”/present tense.)

On a serious note, Jennah is said to be a young queen, so she’s likely in her twenties or early thirties. Anakita is most likely correct, in that the line could better read:

“Approximately fifty years ago, another wave of Elonian refugees came into Tyria, escaping the ravages of Palawa Joko. In recent times, access to Elona is barred off by way of the Desert Gate – the primary land route into the Crystal Desert – having been sealed under Queen Jennah’s order due to a dark presence in the desert. Only the Order of Whispers has knowledge of how to travel to Elona in modern times.”

Being the one who most likely wrote that bit – at two different points in time as the 50 years ago bit was from BWE, while the desert gate bit was post-release – I apologize!

The Desert Gate’s sealing has no date associated with it. They’re two separate (to our knowledge) bits of lore.

Thing is, we don’t know if Jennah is the one who had it first sealed – it’s just that currently it is sealed by her orders (so did she initialize the orders or is she just keeping the orders going?).

I think it meant the last refugees were from over 50 years ago. In recent times, since there are no more refugees flowing through it, the gate is closed.

I would think that the “dark presence” in the desert would be Kralkatorik and thus Jennah would have sealed the gate after he awoke a few years ago. Probably shortly after the Ogre Revolt and Kralkatorik’s passing. She was at Ebonhawk at the time to mandate the closing of the gate.

If it’s Kralkatorrik, it’d be weird to use the phrase ‘dark presence’. Jennah watched him fly past Ebonhawke. He’s not a mysterious darkness; they know what he is, what he looks like, what his name is. They’ve probably visited his Facebook page.

If you want to get technical, Jennah saw a mass of dark clouds with lightning and felt a mind in it and tried to delve into it only for a backlash and realizing it was an Elder Dragon. So she doesn’t necessarily know what he looks like – only Destiny’s Edge truly does.

Also, what the Desert Gate Guards says is this:

“This gate serves as a barrier against the Crystal Desert. Letting you through would be condemning you to death. Dark events have befallen the desert.”
What dark events?
“Truth be told, we don’t know, exactly. We’ve only heard whispers. We’ve been unable to contact Elona since its last refugees fled the desert to Divinity’s Reach.”

He doesn’t mention a dark presence, but dark events – events that he doesn’t know (though he uses the word “we” he gives no context for what we means – it could just mean him and the other guard at the gate, or it may mean public knowledge or overall knowledge of Tyrians – I doubt the last), and furthers to say that since the last refugees, no one has been able to contact Elona since. Of course, he’s wrong – the Order of Whispers are in contact with Elona.

I went and edited the wiki, since I was the one who made the poor wording before.

But if i remember correctly, Queen Jennah created an illusion of the dragon flying past Ebonhawk to fool the dragon’s minions and make them follow the illusion.
So… I don’t really thing you can recreate something you haven’t seen. Unless illusions shape into different forms depending on the thing/person that’s watching it.
Have any clarification on that?

Hmmm, good point.

Of course, it could be that since it was so briefly seen and so far away, it was just the basic shape of a very large Elder Dragon. I don’t think it’d take much to fool Branded creatures with a few second flyby of a large dragon, given they didn’t tell by the mere fact there was no mental connection (as all Elder Dragons seem to hold with their minions) coming from the illusion.

But I suppose that’s still evidence to show Jennah at least knows the general look of Kralkatorrik (just it being a dragon doesn’t mean it looks like Kralky, given how un-dragon like Zhaitan is).
