Lore: Where did ascended gear come from?
There’s no real comparison to original ascended gear other than it’s protection against very severe and unique damage. I think I’ve read some weird theories about the mursaat dwelling within the fractals or that it’s their plane that they dip out to, but there’s nothing to back that up other than mursaat fanboyism. I’d just leave it alone and hope it doesn’t take a-net 5 years to comment on it.
Ascended gear themselves are all tied to lore in some means and can be figured by their names (and for amulets, their little blurbs).
But the tier “Ascended” as well as the Infusion slot is just names chosen for rather unknown purposes – probably just a nod to GW1’s “elite armor” and infusion runs.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
I’m guessing if there’s any explanation it’s that the Ascended gear is from the Mists. I can back that conjecture up with a few things:
- A large part of these are evocative of heroes from the past. And Koss.
- Ones which are found, or were found, are in the Fractals of the Mists. (Laurel Merchants are probably reselling the stuff vendored by experienced explorers )
- To create them in the Mystic Forge you need essences from the Mists.
Ergo, it’s simple to draw a conclusion that Ascended gear is a manifestation of an object from the Mists and stable enough to be used outside of it.
You don’t create anything within the Mystic Forge. You’re just bartering with Zommorros.

I yield to the semantics.
. . . and Zommorros is a bit of a . . . how do I put this nicely . . . no, don’t think I can, so I’ll just shake my head and shrug.
It mostly just appears to be a GW1 reference. The agony representing spectral agony and infusion being seer protection. Ascention was just something to do in GW1 to allow you to gain more attribute points and go into UW and FoW : P.

Actually . . . you still had to go quest for those points And they had lore-based consequences.

I know about the quests and any consequences means more content which is a good bonus. Also it was a joke.
