So, I’ve been spending hours upon hours on THIS particular part of the forums. I absolutely love the lore, and want to clear a few things up. Although I’m not ENTIRELY sure about the lore, I did play GW1 but most of it was spent trying to get money…and pvp :P soo, if you can please explain some of these to me it would help tremendously.

1. I know there are some new gods, so who is new? I think, for one of them, Grenth sealed Dhuum into the underworld and now Grenth is the god of uh…death? I’m not entirely sure

2. A lot of people say that the gods have abandoned humans. Does this mean in GW1 they were PHYSICALLY roaming the lands of Tyria?

3. According to what has been said, the dragons know the other one exists, but they don’t bother each other? So they’re neither allies nor enemies unless one tries to overtake the other?

4. What is the story behind the Pale Tree? From what I’ve gathered, a human (I forget his name) planted the seed and took care of the Pale Tree? Then someone else made the Ventari tablet? Which, for some reason, I keep thinking its a centaur

5. Whatever happened to Kormir?

6. How do Sylvari keep being reproduced? I’m confused as to the whole “the dream” thing and how none of them have children. Can they even shag one another?

7. The dragon that you see in the Sylvari dream when you first create a Sylvari toon, is that the same dragon you fight in Lions Arch?

8. What is the story of Orr? I don’t exactly remember this in GW1, or if it was even mentioned. Was it a place filled with just humans?

9. People say the charr don’t worship gods, yet they have something called “Titans”? I’m not familiar with this

I think that’s it for now. I had other questions, but a lot of threads have cleared them up for me. Thanks in advance

1. Grenth was made a god before Guild Wars. Kormir was made a god at the end of Nightfall

2. Nope. But they did answer our prayers if you did kneel at one of their statues (an avatar would spawn that would sell you buffs). In GW2 they are completely absent.

3. They probably would fight each other if they got in each others way.

4. Indeed, Ronan did find a seed in a cave and planted it. The tablet is made by a Centaur named Vetari yes, which are more or less the laws of the sylvari.

5. She became a god and took the place of Abaddon after the players defeated him at the end of Nightfall.

6. They are made by the Pale tree. They can (and do) have sex however, but they can’t reproduce that way.

7. No idea, there are rumors that it might be an image of Mordremoth a currently rumored Elder Dragon.

8. Orr was the city of the Gods. The first place where Humans entered Tyria with the help of the Gods. It was sunken before Guild Wars takes place by Vizier Khilbron.

9. Titans were seen as gods by the Flame Legion (evil charr) during Guild Wars. The players destroyed them during a side story after the main campaign in Prophecies

Let’s see I’ll answer what I know, but my knowledge is spotty at best.

1. I think kormir was the last to enter the human god pantheon, before that grenth, a half god, overtook dhuum and became the fully fledged god of death.

2. Yes the gods physically inhabited tyria, they lived in orr besides the humans. They even had their houses in orr wich were considered sacred by the orrians. At the time of GW1 though they had already left but still had a hand in the world. Now they’re shwoing no sign of presense anymore.

3. The dragons’ only purpose is to consume magic, I assume so long as they do not intervene with one another they tolerate each other.

4. The pale tree is a mystery, it grew from a magical seed discovered by Ronin who planted it on what was left of his home and family after it was raided by bandits. Ventari was a peaceful centaur who tired of war and strife and lives to his own made code, etched in his tablets.

5. Kormir probably left Tyria alongside the other human gods

6. Sylvari have all the parts necesary for ntercourse but cannot reproduce, all sylvari are born of the tree.

7. No, that’s probably one of zhaitan’s minions

8. Orr was one of the human civilizations, one that was heavily based on magic and worship of their gods who lived with them for some time. It was sunk as a desperate measure to protect it from the charr invasion.

9. The titans were minions of the old human god of knowledge and secrets his name escapes me. He wanted revenge on the world because the other human gods banished him after he refused to take away magic from the world as per Doric’s request (I’m probably wrong here). The charr were pawns in his scheme to dominate the world.

I’ll answer best I can:
1. Grenth and Kormir are both recent arrivals.
2. Yes, from what I can tell, the Gods used to live in Arah (Big city in Orr, Endgame Dungeon)
3. I’m not really sure. An alliance between the Dragons may be an interesting basis for an expansion though (Branded invading the Shiverpeak? Charr dealing with Destroyers?). Most likely, they just tolerate each other until one interferes.
4. The Pale Tree was planted by a human named Ronan. Ventari was, indeed, a Centaur. He and Ronan seemed to be allies tired of warring with each other. Ventari wrote the Tablet after Ronan died, I think.
5. I’m a little hazy on this as I didn’t play GW1, but from what I understand, she becomes the goddess of justice after you help her.
6. The Sylvari have all the same organs as a Human, but only because they were designed to mimic them. They cannot actually reproduce.
7. If you mean the one in Claw Island, the Plaguebearer, no. The Plaguebearer was a minion of Zhaitan.
8. After triggering the Searing in Ascalon, the Charr advanced on Kryta and Orr. They were driven back from Kryta (presumably by force of arms) but Orr was outmatched. To keep it out of enemy hands, Vizer Khilbron (misspelled?) destroyed and sunk Orr in what is known as the Cataclysm. It fell on top of Zhaitan, and when he woke up and rose to the surface, he took it with him.
9. Again, didn’t play GW1, but from what I can understand, The Flame Legion (something of a priest caste) worshipped the Titans to try and get an edge over the Humans. They eventually went renegade.

Q1. I know there are some new gods, so who is new? I think, for one of them, Grenth sealed Dhuum into the underworld and now Grenth is the god of uh…death? I’m not entirely sure

A1. Dhuum was the god of death and doom. He didn’t let anyone resurrect. Grenth, son of Dwayna and arguably a human sculptor, defeated him and took his place as the god of death, ice and justice.
Abbadon was the god of magic and secrets, Kormir took his place as the goddess of truth.
The first time Balthazar appeared he had his father head on his hand. It’s been theorized that he took his father was the former god of war.

Q2. A lot of people say that the gods have abandoned humans. Does this mean in GW1 they were PHYSICALLY roaming the lands of Tyria?

A1. The years in tyrian history are marked by the day the gods stopped roaming the lands of tyria. It’s been 1300 years more or less since the gods left tyria. But their avatars had helped humanity through the ages. Maybe because they were afraid of what Abbadon was capable of or maybe for other reasons. The thing is that their avatars are gone now too.

Q3. According to what has been said, the dragons know the other one exists, but they don’t bother each other? So they’re neither allies nor enemies unless one tries to overtake the other?

A3. I don’t know the answer for that question

Q4. What is the story behind the Pale Tree? From what I’ve gathered, a human (I forget his name) planted the seed and took care of the Pale Tree? Then someone else made the Ventari tablet? Which, for some reason, I keep thinking its a centaur.

A4. Ronon got a special seed from the druids and planted it, the druids were some kind of avatar spirits of melandru that roamed the land. Ronon retired from war and befrended a centaur called Ventari, that eventually outlived him and wrote the ventari tablets as a testament of the centaur-human peace.

Q5. Whatever happened to Kormir?

A5. She was captured while fighting Varesh Ossa and a demon ate her eyes, later she defeated Abbadon and took his power away, becoming a goddess

Q6. How do Sylvari keep being reproduced? I’m confused as to the whole “the dream” thing and how none of them have children. Can they even shag one another?

A6. They do not sexually reproduce, they just sprout from the pale tree. They can adopt younglings and paternize them but they do not get pregnant.

Q7. The dragon that you see in the Sylvari dream when you first create a Sylvari toon, is that the same dragon you fight in Lions Arch?

A7. It migth be a representation of it. It might be a dreammy way to say that you’ll need to fight dragons in your outer life or It might be an actual viny dragon champion from the viny dragon that’s theorized that should exist but that we’ve never heard about.

Q8. What is the story of Orr? I don’t exactly remember this in GW1, or if it was even mentioned. Was it a place filled with just humans?

A8. Orr was mentioned in the GW1 game manual mostly, and in the prophecies story-line. It was one of the 3 human kingdoms, along with Kryta and Ascalon. It was where the gods were living until they left. When the charr invaded Ascalon, they went through the crystal desert and invaded Orr too. The vizier Kel’bron opened a forbiden book of magic that defeated the charr, turned all orrians into undead and sunk the peninsula. 200 years later, when Zhaitan awoke, he raised the peninsula again, creating huge tidal waves that destroyed the former city of Lion’s Arch among others.

Q9. People say the charr don’t worship gods, yet they have something called “Titans”? I’m not familiar with this

A9. The charr where roflstomped by the humans and their gods, in an act of desperation they seek power everywhere. They, found the titans (idk how) and the titans offered them power and gave them a cauldron that made them able to destroy most of Ascalon in the event known as the searing. Later on, the heroes from Ascalon destroyed the titans, rendering the charr powerless again. The char embraced the destroyers as gods and as their new source of magic which were vanquished too. The charr started despising the term god from that repeated experience.

The glory of my ancestors shall be restored.

just a correction on #7

that dragon, as far as we know, is just an imagery of your wyld hunt, which may or may not have been caused by the nightmare court attempting to corrupt the dream. but your hunt, according to your dream, is to bring down the elder dragons. that plant dragon is not necessarily an actual dragon, and no it is not the one you fight in claw island (that’s one of zhaitan’s champions. there’s another one of them in sparkfly fen and like a dozen of them flying over orr)

Others have already given great answers, especially Ludovicus. I’ll try to provide as much background lore as I can on each question as my contribution.

1. I know there are some new gods, so who is new? I think, for one of them, Grenth sealed Dhuum into the underworld and now Grenth is the god of uh…death? I’m not entirely sure

Kormir is the youngest (human) God, becoming a God at the end of Nightfall, replacing Abaddon. Grenth is the second youngest God, and the first God to attain Godhood on Tyria rather than coming to it fully-fledged. He replaced Dhuum, the fallen God of death, who presumably still sleeps in the Underworld, and was fought in GW1.

Orrian History scrolls name Melandru as the oldest, though Dwayna was the first to come to Tyria.

2. A lot of people say that the gods have abandoned humans. Does this mean in GW1 they were PHYSICALLY roaming the lands of Tyria?

The Gods once physically inhabited Tyria, living in the Orrian capital of Arah. However, by the time of Guild Wars 1, they had long since left. GW Prophecies takes place about 1070 years after the Exodus of the Gods, which marks Year 0 on the Tyrian (or ‘Mouvelian’) calendar.

3. According to what has been said, the dragons know the other one exists, but they don’t bother each other? So they’re neither allies nor enemies unless one tries to overtake the other?

The dragons have been described as forces of nature, and don’t seem to be particularly interested in eachother’s existence… yet. We know little about their motivations, if they have them. It’s possible that Zhaitan’s death may have some effect on the others.

4. What is the story behind the Pale Tree? From what I’ve gathered, a human (I forget his name) planted the seed and took care of the Pale Tree? Then someone else made the Ventari tablet? Which, for some reason, I keep thinking its a centaur

The Centaur, Ventari, was a pacifist who exiled himself from his people, and briefly met the heroes in Guild Wars Prophecies. The Human, Ronan, was a Shining Blade. The Seed that became the Pale Tree came from a mysterious cave that contained many other seeds, and when Ventari left behind the ‘Ventari Tablet’ containing his pacifist teachings, it eventually influenced the newborn Sylvari when they emerged two centuries later. We don’t know much about the cave, other than it contained other seeds as well.

5. Whatever happened to Kormir?

Kormir was the Spearmarshal of the Sunspears, an elite military order of Istan in Elona. During Guild Wars Nightfall, she went to war with Kourna, after uncovering a conspiracy between the Kournan leaders Warmarshal Varesh Ossa and General Kahyet, who were working with demonic servants of Abaddon and Corsair pirates.

In the first attack, on Gandara, the Kournan “Moon Fortress”, Spearmarshal Kormir was attacked by The Hunger, a demon of Abaddon. Her eyes were eaten and she was missing for a long time.

Eventually she is revealed to be still alive, and is freed by the hero from Gandara. She accompanies the player character into Vabbi, where the Kournans also go to war, and eventually into the Desolation and into Abaddon’s Realm of Torment. Once Abaddon was defeated, Kormir absorbs his power and ascends to Godhood as the Goddess of Knowledge (Abaddon had been the God of Secrets).

By Guild Wars 2, Kormir, along with the other human Gods, seems to have severed contact with Tyria.

6. How do Sylvari keep being reproduced? I’m confused as to the whole “the dream” thing and how none of them have children. Can they even shag one another?

Sylvari are continually produced by the Pale Tree, and are born adult, and innately curious. Though Sylvari do not reproduce, they do feel romantic attraction and form partnerships, and since reproduction plays no part, Sylvari more often form gay relationships than the other races, in general. Whether they have their own form of ‘sex’, purely for fun, I don’t know.

7. The dragon that you see in the Sylvari dream when you first create a Sylvari toon, is that the same dragon you fight in Lions Arch?

The dragon you fight at Claw Island is Blightgast the Plaguebringer, an undead Dragon champion of Zhaitan. It is not the same dragon as was seen in the dream. The dragon in the Sylvari dream seems to either be a byproduct of the dragon’s corruption, or possibly the Nightmare. Another interpretation would be that the dragon in the dream is a representation of the danger the dragon’s present, shown to you by the Pale Tree to give you your ‘calling’ in life.

8. What is the story of Orr? I don’t exactly remember this in GW1, or if it was even mentioned. Was it a place filled with just humans?

Orr was the first Human kingdom in Tyria, from where Humanity spread to Ascalon and Kryta in the distant past. Humans had, however, existed in Cantha for almost 800 years prior. In Orr was Arah, the capital, the city of the Gods, where Gods walked among humans long ago (see above).

According to Orrian history scrolls, Orr was also a kingdom in which magic was extremely commonplace, used more for everyday tasks than anywhere else in Tyria.

9. People say the charr don’t worship gods, yet they have something called “Titans”? I’m not familiar with this

The Titans were extremely powerful elemental creatures worshipped by the Charr as Gods, revealed in Guild Wars 1 to have granted them the destructive technology they needed for the Searing. They were trapped behind the Door of Khomalie, a magical seal in the volcano Abaddon’s Mouth, and are freed by Vizier Khilbron (Undead Lich) at the end of Guild Wars Prophecies. They were sealed behind the door once again with Khilbron’s second death, atop the bloodstone.

In Guild Wars Nightfall, in the Domain of Anguish, it was revealed that the Titans are servants of Abaddon, created from tortured souls in the Foundry of Failed Creations. The Door of Khomalie, as it turns out, was not a locked door but a sealed portal to the Foundry, from where the Titans had planned their attack and manipulated the Charr who worshipped them.

In Guild Wars: Eye of the North, the Charr have renounced the Titans, since the Titans had been defeated by the humans at the end of Prophecies. The Flame Legion, under Hierophant Burntsoul, ruled over the Charr and instituted a new religion of Destroyer-Worship. When Burntsoul is confronted, he releases the Destroyers, who proceed to attack both Human and Charr alike. Finally, when the Flame Legion are overthrown, the Charr have had enough of Gods, since every supposed “God” they have followed has turned out to be both mortal and evil.

Thanks everyone for responding but there’s a few things that still are a bit confusing.

Do we know as to why the gods left? Seems strange to just up and go like that

Do we also know how the dragons came to be? I’ve read people saying dragons were here long before the gods even arrived

Both good questions…
The Kormir says something like “We’re not needed here anymore, we’re causing problems so we’ll let humans deal with their stuff for a while” when she ascends. There’s no real explanation as to why they left, but everyone’s dragon crazy so theories abound relating to Dragons
And for the origin of Dragons, they just sorta always were on Tyria. Last speculated time they were awake was 10000 BE, which is like…a good 8 or 9 thousand years before the gods set foot on Tyria
Someone else might want to correct that, I’m horrible with dates

What about asurans and sylvari? I don’t ever really hear them talk about gods or higher power. I know the norn believe in the spirits of the wild, charr don’t believe in gods (some), and humans of course have their gods.

The asura have something called the Eternal Alchemy, which you could compare to quantum physics with magic. The sylvari are very new to the world, and their only ‘god’ could be their mother, the Pale Tree.

Sylvari and Asura have more of creedos than religion. Sylvari live by the tenets of the Sylvari Tablet (which I think you can read on the top floor of the Grove) and Asura have Eternal Alchemy, like Jamica said. This thread might be more than you need/want to know, but they explain it pretty well

I want to point out, the charr aren’t blind. They know the human gods exist, they saw the power, they felt the pain when the humans tore the land from their hands because of the backing of their gods. But the difference is that the charr don’t NEED the gods. The charr do things their way, they overcome every obstacle with their brute force and cunning. In the charr mind, humanity clinging to the gods is a sign of weakness, needing something other than yourself to achieve your goals.
