Lyssa was easy prey for Zhaitan (Lyssa event)
The usual theory is that the priestess of Lyssa was lying (something she’d be used to doing in life as a priestess of the goddess of trickery, no doubt). Zhaitan and the Risen in general seem to really like their psychological warfare – this looks to me like just another example.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
The High Priestess in Arah also mentions that Lyssa was killed by Zhaitan, but the Risen are very well known (or should be) for their psychological warfare, consisting of lies, trickery, and empty promises.
We do know that the Elder Dragons can reach into the Mists, btw. Jormag does with his minions, and it’s possible that Kralkatorrik is as well what with two portals to the Mists in the Dragonbrand (Tomb of Drascir and Tomb of the Primeval Kings). Zhaitan may too, given the Door of Komalie’s unknown state.
As for the gods’ location – what is known is that they are not on the world Tyria, nor in the Mists directly. This indicates that – if they even still exist – that they are on another world.
In the end, though possible, it is unlikely that the Lyssa priestesses (High and temple) are telling the truth. It would be a neat twist to see that the priestesses are telling the truth, imo, however on the flip side this means that Zhaitan was killed after absorbing a god’s power which is pretty much impossible because 1) too weak for being an Elder Dragon backed by a god’s power and 2) a god’s power cannot be destroyed and thus, when Zhaitan was killed, if he had a god’s power consumed then that power would have manifested and threaten to destroy everything like what happened when Abaddon was killed at the end of Nightfall – without a container, a god’s power goes rampant and effectively becomes a very powerful nuke.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Unless Zhaitan isn’t dead! O.O
Or one of his Champions(perhaps a lieutenant like The Shatterer) has Lyssa’s power(in which case we have a huge threat on the Ring of Fire Isles which is ruled by Risen and the God Champion ruling over them) .
Unless Zhaitan isn’t dead! O.O
The Zhaitan we killed turned out to be a powerful illusion, and when he fell into the fog/mist below; that was when it shattered. It would be horrible story writing, but I would still laugh pretty hard, if that was the case.
It is a lie, as discussed in this thread:

And my post analizing the perversion of the priests’ mentality:

Very wrong. Farnax only says that Zhaitan eats gods, nothing definite. And as I brought up in the thread linked above:
Thalador.4218Then, Priestess Farnax in Arah uses the same psychological warfare again, but she mentions nothing about Lyssa getting devoured, only that Zhaitan eats gods. Which is actually true to a certain degree, as Zhaitan consumed almost all of the divine power they left behind, including Abaddon’s. Just look at their colossal, corrupted statues. Those were indeed mere prey for Zhaitan.
A fantasy of sci-fi cyborg implants grafted into the desiccated flesh of Guild Wars’ corpse.

As others said it’s just mind tricking to hinder your morale. She also mentions that ALL gods were victims of the dragon. She was the high priestess of the godess of illusions so she tries to plan the illusion of despair (she even screams “despair!” when she says those things) in your mind. Other risen priests also use twisted versions of their gods wisdom and gifts when fighting you as Thalador said.

Like the part about how gods can’t be killed only sealed away like Abaddon, however I’d like to ascertain that they do exist, whether it be as gods or powerful beings. All races admit their existence, there’s evidence of existence (Malchor in Malchor’s leap, his ghost and him seeing the gods and trying to sculpt driving him to insanity blah blah blah) and then the avatars in GW1…as in at the shrines. I like how you put in there that they could be on another world, as in the lore there is some suggestion that they brought humans to Tyria (the world) from somewhere else, thus the gods must also be able to travel to other worlds.
So in all, the fact that the world didn’t get obliterated by god-magic is proof that Lyssa wasn’t consumed by Zhaitan since we are forced to kill him in the story. Unless there is something like, he consumed Lyssa, but Lyssa was still alive and killing him the whole time which would reason as to why he was so weak.
Another possible outcome is that the priestess was telling the truth. Her truth of what she saw/experienced. Lyssa is the goddess of deception, it wouldn’t be too hard for her to trick a priestess and an elder dragon that the dragon in question had consumed her. Thus, the priestess is telling the truth of what she knows, but the truth is not the ultimate truth, as truth can be and is very abstract as it shifts based on perception. In fact, consumed Lyssa may not be meant in a literal stance, and may just mean her temple or her influence on Tyria.
