I recently looked up the meanings for the names Ceara and Scarlet. I know that most people consider Ceara to translate to “Black.” But here’s some additional information:

I’m not sure how the Scarlet meaning ties into our Scarlet, if at all.

Hey here is an utterly crazy crackpot theory. Ceara is Mr E. She is a split personality, a remanent of the original person still free of whatever entity is possessing Scarlet Briar’s mind trying that is attempting to self sabotage in the hopes we can stop her from unleashing what ever she is trying to dig up.

Utterly unlikely and someone else probably already thought of it. With the right lead in through it could have made an amazing plot twist.

the meaning of the scarlet name is obvious: she saw a red briar, she named herself after it. “red briar” isn’t as menacing as “scarlet briar” though.

I think Scarlet refers to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hibiscus_coccineus. It is relative to the well known flower Rose. Since a rose has spikes on it, it would fit the nightmare theme well.

There are probably a number of different themes woven into her choice of a name, which we may be able to identify with greater clarity soon. Nonetheless, the meaning suggested by Psynch does fit quite well given Ceara’s personality.
