As fellow adventurers, I am sure you are aware of the fact that many a monster drops blood, claws, skins, etc. But do you ever wonder where these items go when you kill an enemy and find he has nothing? How can these monsters function without blood, bones, claws, skin, and a whole lot of stuff? And even when the things do pop up, how can an animal live with just one porous bone, or a claw? What were you thinking Melandru?

I’d write it off as a matter of quality. All their good bones were cracked or broken during the fight, no bones for me. All their blood is gushing out and staining the ground, too late to get a sizable sample. Their teeth and claws were already in poor condition before I smashed them, guess I’ll keep hoping to find one with better hygiene.

But as the others pointed out, even that’s a flimsy excuse.

If Anet wanted to take the more realistic approach, they could have made the requirements for recipes higher, like needing 50 vials of blood instead of one to craft something… But then again, is it realistic to have different kinds of blood, some more potent than other? Blood is made out of the same cells, is it not?

Who says they don’t have blood or bones? Maybe you broke all their bones so they’re unusable – or they’re too brittle. Maybe the blood got all drained in combat.

But then again, is it realistic to have different kinds of blood, some more potent than other? Blood is made out of the same cells, is it not?

Blood from one animal will hold different qualities than another animal. Some blood will be healthier, some unhealthy. Some species’ blood would be usable for some things while another species blood wouldn’t be usable for the same thing.

The same thing is actually true in reality. Blood of certain animals may be used to mix in with sauces for seasoning.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

But it is not just animals, look at the humanoid enemies. How come I don’t get a pistol from a pistol wielding bandit? Or how about the fact that I killed a bear, using nothing but mace to maul it, and get no fur from it, despite the fact its fur should have been unharmed. I should have at least gotten a low quality fur, but I do not get anything. I agree with the fact that the blood might have escaped, or the items are not high of a quality enough, but I should have at least gotten scrap, etc. So what do you say to that?

making the hide worthless and damaged before the bear ever dies :P

This was actually a huge factor that lead me to love Marrowind. You could even retrive your arrows from what you killed and scavnge the gear of NPC’s.

Yeah the whole idea of monsters dropping loot is far from realistic, but if you do wanna nitpick it, look at it as you beat them to such an unrecognizable pulp, there wasn’t anything left to salvage, or maybe in the process of you trying to remove it, you botched it up and it wasn’t worth saving. While I applaud your attention to detail, take it all with a grain of salt, you’ll drive yourself crazy if you worry over it too much lol.

As far as bones/blood, I always just figured when they don’t drop it, it’s because I have destroyed it in the process of killing the mob. Or maybe they had a bad diet and the bones were bad quality?

How can I kill fifteen monoblos in Monster Hunter and not one of them apparently had a heart?

But yeah, as others have said, the most reasonable assumption (and the one I console myself with in Monster Hunter) is that such things are usually damaged beyond use in a fight, and we can only occasionally salvage them in an appropriate state to use. Even if it is a little odd that I somehow broke every claw on that animal…

Or it could be magic! Tyria is a very magical place after all but that’s just what I think in a very optimistic view.

Going to the realistic one, the bones and blood could have been taken by the player already (The loot) thus the blood and bones dissapeared!

Give a man fire, he will be warm, set a man on fire, he will be warm forever! …or dead…

At some point, you have to take a step away from realism.

You’d say just because you bludgeoned a bear to death with a mace, why not get some type of fur/hide? Well, do you think your character should also spend 10-15min skinning the creature, wrapping the hide properly so it doesn’t get contaminated or mess up any other valuables in your inventory sacks? You don’t want the bloody fur getting your food and other equipment dirty, after all.

Yeah, I’m just going to say RPG loot is loot. No need to try and RP the details.

Maybe they want to avoid having to deal with something like Skyrim.

I mean, you don’t want a backpack filled with 15 dented breastplates, 21 torn leather boots, 43 broken sword hilts, 153 brooms and a partridge in a pear tree, all with a combined value of three copper… do you?

That does make sense, but then so does the question “why can’t I collect fangs/claws/bones all the time”? The only real answer is “video game logic”.

Maybe crafters/buyers are exceedingly fussy and only want a bone/claw/fang that looks EXACTLY like the object depicted in the icon? (And in a world where monsters magically respawn 2 mins after their death, that actually does kinda make sense.)

Oozes, in a general RPG setting, have almost always, from the early primitive days of RPG’s, had remnants of their victims inside them that they dropped (well when RPG’s started having drops, the super early ones didn’t do that, you had to roll for random chance to recover a specific item…ect ect…it was a mess). King’s Quest, if anyone remembers that, had a few dungeons full of them and every single one had bones in it. Just go look at any Baldur’s Gate game, they were infested with oozes in half of the dungeons, and nearly every one of them had some kind of bone or other very solid material you wouldn’t expect in them.

I remember King’s Quest games but anything earlier than 4 is kind of blurry. Mostly . . . well, mostly because I was too young and my position in playing them was taking notes on where things were when we would (inevitably) need to backtrack.

. . . I don’t recall oozes/slimes involved . . . I do recall gelatinous cubes. (Those sons of . . . )

Still could fall under the “indigestibles” theory of ooze diets. It’s more bizarre to have creatures like wolves dropping a human-sized breastplate. (How did they even carry that??)
