So, for a while I’ve been thinking of rolling a Norn. Yet, somthing about there Totem Spirits bugs me.

What does it take to gain the power of transforming? Is it inherant? Can Norn just transform into a Snow Leopard one day then Raven the next? Or is there some kind of rite they have to do with a Shaman of that Spirit to gain the power?

When you make your character, you choose which animal spirit guided you. Then at Level 30, when you can get your first elite skill, the Norn racial elite skill is to transform into your animal spirit (the one you chose, so choose wisely!) The transformation lasts for 2 minutes if I’m not mistaken.

Unless I am mistaken, you can choose every totem transformation.

No, no. You misunderstand me. I know how the game mechanics works. But what does the Lore say? Can Norn in Lore change into any Animal Form, or are they stuck with the one they venerate. Bear Shaman may only become the bear, Raven Shaman may only become the raven, ect. Or can they change into any Animal Totem? Like: Somone Somthing Norn follows Bears Strength, but today decided to hunt like a Snow Leopard.

That is what I am asking, not Game Mechanics. Reason why this is in the Lore section.

Honestly I am not sure it is ever specified, it would seem a Norn can pray to any spirit for strength and thus receive it’s blessing. The only limitation seems to be if the Spirit judges you worthy or not of their blessing. For example, bear is highly unlikely to bless a son of svanir.

I think in Lore, you can only become one animal
You can take on facets of the other animals, like the cunning of raven when you honor the bear, but your wereform is only ever one totem

In Edge of Destiny, Eir transforms at least once into bear, but if I remember right her totem spirit is actually Wolf. The wolf makes sense for her, being the leader of a pack, but when she calls on the form of the bear, it is so that she can summon extra strength for whatever feat she is attempting to accomplish.

Yeah, I want to say that Eir has two different transformations in Edge of Destiny, but I may be wrong there – I’d have to look over the book again. Certainly Wolf makes sense as Eir’s main totem but I think the worship of the Spirits of the Wild would also support the idea of different spirits for different occasions – using their particular strengths.

In Eye of the North, when norn were first introduced, their transformation was called ‘becoming the bear’ and it was always bear. That was probably something which changed in the development of GW2, though, and I wouldn’t read too much into it.

They only ever became bear, but they also only called upon it when they were, again, in need for extra strength. I have a feeling that it was merely a lack of being able to create the other forms for the race on ArenaNet’s part, but it could be said that we only ever saw them in need of the bear form and no others. The other thought is that perhaps the Norn came to revere the forms of Wolf, Snow Leopard, and Raven more after their flight from the original homelands, thus making them see wisdom in taking the forms of these animal spirits as well.

the shapeshifting is part of the norn’s nature. make no mistake, they are not humans.

in fact, their “human” form is hinted at to be just something they’re more comfortable with.

the kodan believes the norns are descendant from a kodan tribe that was lost after they lost their Voice, and that their shapeshifting is a result of that “impurity”.
