I’m thinking of changing my Norn character’s name to "Havroun of " …. haven’t picked what animal/spirit yet. I wanted to know the origin of the word “Havroun” first, however.

I know the wiki defines them as “uncommon Norn Shaman” but I’m trying to just know the history of the word itself. For all my google searches, I’ve found only that it means “wild oat” in Old Norse?

Anybody, ideas?

My best guess is from the root “haver” which is ‘friend’ in Jewish and Arabic. So may refer to being the chosen ‘friend’ of a particular Spirit of the Wild since each SotW only has one havroune.

Makes sense. I’ve made the toon, maybe something will come up along the way.

As a norn junkie I have to speak up incase you aren’t aware…. but in the norn there is only one havroun per spirit. It also seems the more norn-sympathetic spirits are the ones who choose havrouns. I’ll admit I’m not 100%, but I doubt one of the “wild” spirits like hare or, hell, let’s say gorilla, would choose a havroun. But hey, we aren’t given much lore in some of these areas so if you make it work…

I’m merely posting this incase this is something you are looking to really get into, like RP or something, it would be kind of “off”. Though if you don’t care too much that it might not fit into the true game world, have at it! Its your character after all, I just wanted to shed some light on the matter.

@Lindelle: All of the Spirits of the Wild (except possibly the “far flung” ones like Gorilla and possibly Otter; Hare is another spirit unlikely to have a havroun). However, Ox, Minotaur, Wurm, etc. should all have havrouns.

In the game, we meet the havrouns for the four main spirits, and we know that Owl hasn’t had a havroun since her death.

For RP purposes, you cannot really do the four major spirits unless you’re RP’ing a post-Grechen’s death and go as the Bear Havroun. BUt you can as a self-proclaimed havroun of the much lesser spirits like Otter, Gorilla, and Hare. Could go with the lesser spirits (Wolverine, Ox, Eagle, Wurm, Minotaur) – though I think those who fought Jormag (Wolverine, Ox, and Eagle) as well as Minotaur are said to have not had a havroun in a few generations – havrouns for the lesser spirits is rarer, iirc.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Notwithstanding the above lore and RP arguments, wouldn’t naming a character as “Havroun of” be quite borderline according to the few naming rules that are upon us? It would be the same for “Eirsson” or “Voice of the Wolfborn”, e.g., wouldn’kitten

I was unable to retrieve this rule under the Naming policy but the “be influenced, but don’t mess with GW2 lore (past, present and future)”, I’m pretty sure to have read it somewhere. Or maybe did I have over-interpreted the policy. ^^

Oh please, get “n_’_t__it” out of the filter!!
