Orr no go boom boom?
Abaddon’s explosion of magic is something unique unto gods – we’re told via the Apostate that a god’s power is indestructible, but the mantle can be passed on; based from Abaddon’s death if the god is killed and the mantle not passed on, that power seems to go critical.
The Thaumanova Reactor Fallout is a different situation entirely. It was a reactor powered by chaos magic that exploded.
Elder Dragons, unlike gods, do not contain indestructible magic, they simply consume and exude magic. Magic itself, even in large concentrations, is not explosive or volatile, though it can make the land mobile in the form of elementals, by all evidence. Also keep in mind that Zhaitan was being starved for who-knows-how-long, effectively reducing the amount of magic within him.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
replie of the year ^^

Or we just didn’t fully killed Zhaitan. Without a corpse, there’s no evidence.
Remember The order of whispers believes that the dragons cannot be truly killed.
And the order of whispers have amassed a good amount of information.
But the Order of Whispers is no where near infallible. In my mind, the idea of Zhaitan not being dead comes more from groups of people who just refuse to believe that a dungeon as “lame” as Arah was a fight against an epic Elder Dragon. That being said, we’ll know the truth when more land opens up and we get to see the rest of Orr. If Zhaitan’s body isn’t located somewhere in the rest of Orr, then I’ll definitely join the “He Ain’t Dead!” club.

I think Konig’s answer is the the most plausible. However, I’ll join that club if we don’t find at least some evidence of his passing.

What I believe is that we put him to slumber for other ~10 000 years. I believe that even if we destroy its body we cannot kill him. That the dragons are a natural consequence of the existence of magic and that they will form over time somewhere in Tyria. I don’t think we will fight Zhaitan again (unless we have some kind of time travel device that takes us ~10 000 years to the future) but I don’t think he’s dead. He’s just defeated with a ~10 000 years respawn.
Does this even sound logical?
What you are saying is we destroyed the physical form of Zhaitan, but his magical essence may still exist somewhere and reform. The only problem I have with this theory is that in the land of Tyria and even in the Mists, it seems that for magic of such large concentration to stay together it needs some sort of physical form. I mean technically Abaddon should have been able to still survive on some higher level as a being of pure magic, but instead the magic started to release violently. I think a similar situation is what is happening with Zhaitan, only on a much less violent level. The magic that made up Zhaitan is being released back into Tyria. I do have to wonder, though, if such a concentration of magic energy can go un-tampered with, or if it becomes inert, if it doesn’t leave some sort of blight on the land because of the malicious nature of it.

I’m saying something similar, but not exactly that.
What I’m saying is that the dragons are the aspects of magic itself. Meaning that their very bodies are magic, and a very stable state of it (like materia in FF7). Cutting a dragon in a half wouldn’t cause any explosion nor cataclysm. It would just create two big chunks of solidified magic.
I’m saying that magic tends to aggregate in some way through the millennia. And those are the dragons. You can destroy the aggregated aspect of magic. But it would aggregate again and it would awaken again.
This also means that we could see in the future some Zhaitan kittenelics with immense magical power ready to be tapped on.
Of course I have no lore to sustain this. But I just wanted to state my theory in a clear way.
