Okay, this might be too trivial for others, but I was wondering what is the purpose of those giant pulleys in each sector of the pavilion?

My theory:
The whole Crown Pavilion is hanging above the “endless” depths of the Great Collapse.

And it indicates the question in me:
Why is hanging a huge arena, like the pavilion easier, safer and cheaper than just putting some solid beams under and building the remaining stuff over them?

I can accept that the currently used method is better than others, I’m just curious. What do you think?

I had a friend look at this, and he said they were suspending the arenas where you fight the Queen’s Gauntlet.

I looked at this the other day as well after Konig mentioned it, and it seems there are two systems in play, the ones holding the Queen’s Gauntlet arenas up, as well as the ones holding the entire Crown Pavilion up. I suspect the reasoning behind this system may have something to do with the sheer depth of the chasm that formed after whatever happened to the arts district (whether it was a sinkhole or something else).

Unless I looked at it the wrong way, that’s how it seemed to be.

I share views with Leon. I think that it’s hanging just simply due to the depth of t he hole…

Which makes me really want to see the Pavilion (not the gauntlet part though) have its chains break and just tumble on downward, stuffed full of haywire Watchknights and watch it go spinning down like a falling enlarged coin until CRAkitten lands, diagonally and viewable, on the ground below.

Alternatively, it may be that having supports underneath that are strong and large enough is just far more expensive and wouldn’t show off the human’s tenacity of “we’re still kicking!” that the Pavilion celebration is meant to show. Still want to see the kitten fall though. I am no fan of the Pavilion. And then cover the hole with a Canthan district, one that goes down in a spiral along the sides of the Great Collapse, with the Gauntlet hanging mid-air admist other arts district fitting things – like stages and circus shows!

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I want to see the pavilion fall as well. And then we find ourselves in a brand new underground dungeon, full of old Canthan buildings, that Anet tried to cover up. It’s a conspiracy!

ok after reading this I checked this more cautiously.
and as for me it look like some kind of elevator system – when You need to shut down the pawilon as such You just use that mechanist to pull this up and hiding under those “ringy” walls upthere.
differences in high makes it more difficult to calculate but it seems that when pully pulled up that central “isle” with thier “walls” fils that big gap seen from the up.
that’s why that “walls” are primarily gets narrower and then after some point there are getting wider.
