A couple of days ago I read a thread in this forum regarding the validity of norn thieves. This, sparked a conversation between my gf and I, regarding races and professions. We both agree that any race has a number of valid IC reasons to be any profession, but some races just “click” better with certain professions. We decided to pick 2 professions for each race (with a third as runner up), then pick 2+1 races for each profession. Our list is the following:
Race and Professions:
Profession and Races:
The choices above were based on feel, mood, theme and lore. I’m very curious to see how you guys match the Races and Professions
Well in my opinion, any profession really fits a human, and that is because well, we are humans and professions are made with us in mind, lol. That being said I definitely agree that certain things, like warrior asura seem more like a joke than anything else, but at the same time they are obviously necessary to protect the people (when their golems go crazy and try to kill everyone :P)
In the end I think I’ll go with what doesn’t make sense for races (in the lightest meaning possible).
Humans – All professions honestly make sense.
Charr – Necromancers, Guardians, and Mesmers make little sense to me. I can see Elementalists having uses in seige instances, but they are iffy at best.
Norn – Elementalists, Guardians, Mesmers, and Engineers do not make sense for the norn to me. Warriors, rangers, theives, and necromancers do to me because of their animal spirits, reverence for the wild, and hunts for glory.
Sylvari – Honestly I’m going to put Sylvari in the same zone as the humans in saying that everything makes sense to me, just because of the fact that they are more goal driven, and everything that will help them towards their goals they will take into account. Although I found plants making engineering devices a bit weird.
Asura – They are a very magical race, so in my mind warrior and guardian don’t make as much sense as any of the others. I do see theives as useful for stealing others research (lol) and engineers as just asura that are intrigued about other types of technology.
Norn make perfect mesmers – most raven shamans are, in fact, mesmers. And elementalist makes sense for them since they live in harsh elements – kind of feels like commanding the elements would be hand-in-hand for learning how to survive. Guardians are warriors with magic and faith, so that makes sense for me with norn too. Only engineers are really questionable with norn, tbh.
And your saying guardian doesn’t fit asura doesn’t make sense – you say they’re a magical race, so a magical profession doesn’t make sense? TBH, I only don’t see warriors as making sense for asura, but there were plenty of such in GW1 among the NPCs (it was the most common asuran profession in fact!).
Mesmer to me is most connected to humans. The human queen is mesmer and because there is a kinda nobility feel about the mesmer and humans really are the only ones with a nobility mesmer is a human profession for me. That said mesmer would also be awesome for sylvari, less for asura imo, but still fits.
Guardian is also a humanesque profession mostly… being knightly and all.
Ranger works for all, although perhaps a bit less for asura who are more magically inclined.
Necromancer works beautyfully with asura and sylvari. Sylvari because rather than fear of death, it intriques them, they are curious and want to know how everything works. Asura have that Oola quote and somehow it just goes quite well with mad genious for me.
Elementalist is a kinda fits all. Charr is the only one where elementalist can be less looked well upon, what with the flame legion and all. Elementalist works beautyfully for everyone else though.
Warrior is another kinda fits all. Again with asura being the least likely warrior.
Thief is also a kinda fits all, cannot see it not fitting any of them although they may use it differently.
Engineer is a charr mostly profession. Simply because lorewise they invented the profession. It is based on charr tech more than asura tech and those 2 are vastly different. However it takes well to any other race too.
By not making sense, I am not saying that it is not possible or that it is just plain wrong. It is merely that in my mind those professions don’t feel quite as at home with those races as others do, and nothing more.
I’m a bit iffy about Asura Engineers because virtually anything the Engineer profession can create seems… primitive… compared to the Stargate-esque technology Asura in general have access to. I’m not saying an Asura couldn’t or wouldn’t tinker with stuff like steampunk turrets, flintlock guns, flamethrowers, grenades, etc, but I halfway expect an Asura Engineer at some point to just go “kitten this!” and pull out a Zat’nik’tel. :P
Norn engineer as main here. I do see why people think it’s odd, with the norn probably the least technological advanced race, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t certain individuals interested in technology. And since they are location wise the closest to the charr, it only makes sense they get their hands on charr technology.
I agree though that they are the least likely engineers.
granted, the charr and human (to a lesser extent) steampunk-ish technology of an engineer is relatively primitive compared to asuran magitech, i find that it suits the asura however, simply due to their racial/cultural predisposition for tinkering with stuff
Well, I do remember that there are some asura in Brisban Wildlands that are finding ways to harvest the natural world’s energy, through photosynthesis and steam. Also remember that Charr technology isn’t steam powered just yet, it just looks steampunk.
