Living story and personal story spoilers ahead

Hi folks,
Given the recent hints of dragons being involved in the living story, as well as the DO NOT TOUCH thumpers, among other things, I wanted to put together a theory that would at least entertain the notion that Primordus is involved. (I made this video before all of these neat hints today).

More than that, I argue there that Primordus is planning a campaign against Tyria and has actually recruited Scarlet as his champion/lieutenant/general. Through this framework, Scarlet’s actions make a lot more sense and seem to have an overarching motive: produce a new, powerful minion army for Primordus.

Why?

In the personal story (The Hatchery), we see that Primordus is actually experimenting with alternative forms of corruption; that is, corruption from birth and through incubation (hatching eggs). This is a revelation that we may not have paid much attention to (with our focus on Zhaitan) but all of the Orders agents agree that this is a uniquely new form of corruption. However, this technique proves to be insufficient as the minions that are hatched are too weak to do anything of value and we vanquish them fairly easily. So, Primordus has the corruption-from-birth angle right, but he needs a way to birth minions that are actually powerful.

Enter Scarlet (or Ceara) – in her experiment with Omadd, Ceara attempted to plunge into the eternal alchemy. However, if we think about the Thaumanova Reactor – mixing chaos magic (portals, gateways, synergetics in general) with dragon magic, we produce volatile and dangerous results. Given Rata Sum’s history (and present day problems) with Primordus and Destroyers, it’s very possible that the area in general sits atop a draconic leyline (as the Thaumanova Reactor did). And in this case, Primordus’ leyline. So when Omadd fires up the machine, mixing the chaos magic powering the machine with the dragon magic in the area, Ceara doesn’t completely plunge into the eternal alchemy; instead she becomes saturated in Primordus’ magic. But why didn’t she access the eternal alchemy? Honestly, I think it was a power supply issue.

We actually experience something like this ourselves in the Asura Infinity Ball personal story. When we supercharge our infinity ball, it produces steam creatures – creatures from an alternative world. THIS is the power that Omadd and Ceara were trying to harness; the power to traverse space and time. But what happens when the infinity ball is NOT supercharged? Well, when we activate it, a bunch of Destroyers come out! Dragon minions, and Primordus’ minions, no less. It may be the case that, when mixing chaos and dragon magic, there is a spectrum of energy input that either taps you into the draconic magic in the area, but if you are able to provide enough energy to the device, that can take you into the eternal alchemy (I know, that sounds awkward). This graph kind of captures how I conceptualize this : (http://i.imgur.com/uHyLz6d.png)

In this volatile mixture of chaos and dragon magic, Scarlet is disconnected from the dream and becomes uniquely vulnerable to Primordus’ influence and possible corruption (I provide more details in the video for those that are wary of this explanation).

After being recruited by Primordus, Scarlet must build the infrastructure for such a monumental task of engineering a powerful dragon minion army. This is the purpose for the alliances (among other things). Each alliance contributes their own… contributions. We see a lot of the reasoning for each alliance in the Nightmare Tower abandoned lab puzzle.

Ultimately these alliances are a means to an end: the Toxic Hybrid, the first (or one of the first) iteration of this new Primordus minion. One that is produced through incubation and is born extremely powerful. The only thing missing is Primordus’ corruption. I think this will be part of the next update, and we’ll probably see some form of Destroyer Hybrid or something like that. And Scarlet will now be mass producing these creatures in her factory somewhere (the ‘islands’?) and finally unleashing them on Tyria.

She is amassing a new, super army – a combination of the alliances, the new corrupted minions she’s created, and also by drumming up all of the destroyers still underground (via the Mysterious Probes).

And that’s just the summary!

You can hear all of the details in the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLD5F1mAhIA

I’ve also included my detailed notes (basically the script for the video) in case some of you want to read through those: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B9Urj9xEO1lOVDlCc1JoTVZkWm8/edit?usp=sharing

Interesting…….so in your opinion where does the newly talked about “Death Star” come into play? maybe the factory is in the sky instead of “the islands” or it’s considered a island in the sky?

Thanks for your take it was interesting.

Didnt have the time to listen to the whole video yet as I am quite busy studying, but I can see you are really convinced about this and that you have put in a lot of work into forming this theory. I will probably comment again when I watch it whole but there are a few things I need to get off my chest.

- Although I havent watched the video yet, I’ll say now that I still think Scarlet is trying to exploit the dragons power. She is IMO not a leuitenant. She might be trying to get into the picture of Primordus. It seems to me too though that Primordus would probably be the most likely dragon. If she was a champion she should be able to infuse the hybrids she made with destroyer energy herself. Maybe she saw in her vision that Primordus would be the way of solving something, something that bothers her. No idea what at this point.

- Completely off topic but I am desperate for a response on this for some reason. The Lion Statue in LA is facing another way I noticed today. I dont know for how long now. It was facing towards the Mount Maelstrom area and now it is more facing towards the Grove. Please tell me I havent gone insane and tell me your thoughts on it :P I thought it was weird because you dont simply turn a statue, unless it is some special type, but then it is weird that I only notice it now.

I know I do sound quite convinced of the theory, but I’m actually quite cynical of it myself. I propose the most reasonable thread that I can think of to tie everything together while including Primordus. However, I really had to ‘stretch’ the lore in many ways, which has me feeling pretty ambivalent about it. But for all of the people who are arguing that the corruption of a Sylvari is such a fragile idea (it is), they themselves don’t see how similarly fragile the ‘rule’ is that Sylvari can’t be corrupted. There’s no basis for it that we know of yet. And do people really think that when we finally understand the Sylvari resilience to dragon corruption that there won’t be some loophole or weakness that can be exploited? Anyway, I think the theory a neat explanation, but I would be content with any other outcome.

Oh man, I don’t know anything about the lion. Very interesting indeed! How fast does it move? In a day can you see the difference?

This is a revelation that we may not have paid much attention to (with our focus on Zhaitan) but all of the Orders agents agree that this is a uniquely new form of corruption. However, this technique proves to be insufficient as the minions that are hatched are too weak to do anything of value and we vanquish them fairly easily. So, Primordus has the corruption-from-birth angle right, but he needs a way to birth minions that are actually powerful.

Well, I’m glad you’re not saying that that storyline shows Primordus corrupting a living being… cuz I’d have to point our you’d be wrong there and I’ve done that so many times. Thank you for saving me the trouble.

Anyways, you’re wrong about those destroyers hatched from the eggs to be too weak – as there are standard destroyers hatching from some of the eggs too. The chances with the crablings are that we disturbed them before they could fully “mature” (so to speak) while within those “eggs” – only the crabs have a “weak” form among the destroyer minions so instead of making new minions they likely went with just mainly featuring crablings.

Given Rata Sum’s history (and present day problems) with Primordus and Destroyers, it’s very possible that the area in general sits atop a draconic leyline (as the Thaumanova Reactor did). And in this case, Primordus’ leyline.

I don’t see why you think that the Elder Dragons get their own leylines. Leylines by nature are the ways in which magic flows through the world itself – living beings may tap into them, but they do not get designated leylines all to themselves. I don’t see why Elder Dragons would be any different, as they would likely be consuming the leylines.

And why are you saying Omadd’s machine was powered by dragon and chaos magic? The Thaumanova Reactor and Omadd’s machines are two different things. There is nothing to link Omadd to the Inquest anyways. Why didn’t Scarlet access the Eternal Alchemy? Because the machine was merely a sensory deprivation machine – in other words all the thing did was make her blind, deaf, mute, unable to smell, and unable to feel (touch sensation, not emotions though she doesn’t feel that way either :P).

You can slap the lack of Eternal Alchemy (if that’s what Scott meant by “not seeing what she thought she saw”) to flawed asuran theory. However, I would like to point out the Pale Tree’s recent dialogue about Scarlet. She confirms warning Scarlet – possibly referring to that ‘vision’ of Scarlet’s; though that wouldn’t be too odd, doesn’t mean she saw Eternal Alchemy but instead the connection between sylvari, Dream, and Pale Tree (possibly Nightmare too).

That makes no sense. You’d note that the first time the Infinity Ball was powered up – with the least amount of power of all three attempts – Steam Creatures came out.

Each time the Infinity Ball showed different possible futures – a total of two or three possible futures (or even one, really). The need for ever-greater power sources in the storyline was just to keep the Infinity Ball “portal” open longer so that actual results rather than random creatures pouring out could be obtained.

The amount of power did not affect what the Infinity Ball did, just how long it was open and how viable to results were. Similarly, the amount of power wouldn’t have effected Omadd’s machine in that kind of way you claim because it was simply depriving Ceara of her five senses; he mentions previous patients dying – this is likely due to shock of losing said senses.

Why I can see why Anet would do that (they are crazy like that), it makes no sense to me that the fire dragon would use a plant person as a champion… like less than 0 sense.

It would make much much more sense for her to be the champion of the jungle dragon imo. Especially because we know one of his champions was already in the dream based on the plant starting area.

How do you get Primordus’ minions out of the Toxic Hybrid? If you observe the body of the Toxic Hybrid you will note that it holds all the same designs as the sylvari body. It is literally a krait-shaped sylvari. It has the little “sprouting from” central area in the lower back (you’ll note that sylvari underwear comes from here as well as most sylvari cultural armor flowing from this spot).

The Toxic Hybrid is literally no more than a fast-evolving giant krait-shaped sylvari. The “incubation” process is no different than a sylvari in the “golden fruit” of the Pale Tree.

Besides, if Primordus or any other Elder Dragon tried to corrupt Scarlet – or any other sylvari – said sylvari will literally drop dead. That’s their “immunity” to dragon corruption. And if the Toxic Hybrid is anything like that, then it too would just drop dead once touched by Primordus’ corruption. Even the Mordremoth-corrupting-the-Nightmare-Court theory that I have is hindered by this fact.

So Scarlet cannot be a minion of any Elder Dragon.

She’s anti-establishment though, and said herself that she doesn’t want her destiny to be controlled by the Dream, the Nightmare, or the Dragons, thus making her a champion of a dragon highly improbable. Queen Jennah is more likely to be the new champion of Kralkatorrik than Scarlet is to be the champion of any dragon, IMO.

I had an interesting thought today, I was discussing Primordus with a friend and he wanted to know the origin story, as it were. So as I started off the explanation, I told about how Primordus was in the Central Transfer Chamber, or at least a room off of it, I can’t remember exact details, but he was close, if not in, the Central Transfer Chamber, which housed a lot of Asura Gates.

I was showing him a mysterious probe as well, and explaining how I thought that the word “probe” kinda seems to me like they’re probing for something underground.

And then after watching the trailer today for the Living World recap, at the end when it shows the broken Asura Gates, I went back to my explanation of Primordus and how he was by (or in) the Central Transfer Chamber, which also had Asura Gates…. Is this final scene in the trailer hinting that we are going to be dealing with something Primordus related?

Just a random thought.

Another issue with linking Scarlet to any dragon is that in an interview – I think this one – Scott pretty much stated that Scarlet’s plot is a filler arc to separate two ED-focused storylines. The chances of scarlet being tied to a dragon is immensely slim because of this.

Scarlet is not a champ, as Konig Des Todes said it ‘is a filler arc to separate two ED-focussed storylines’

If you want likely Dragonchamps, think like Urgoz on steroids for Mordremoth (assumed name for the Jungle Dragon) or the Sylvari starter personal quest dragon.

The Great Destroyer, defeated exchamp of Primordus in GW1 also was dragonshaped, just like the Claw of Jormag and The Shatterer are shaped like dragons.

No, a sylvari becoming a champion doesn’t make sense. Neither being a minion, she is just way to narcissistic to follow anyone or anything.

Well, dragon champions don’t have to be dragon-shaped. In fact, Great Destroyer looked more like a tennis ball, but whatever, not my point :p

In the novel “The Edge of Destiny” we can read that our überteam are on the hillarious cheese “killing spree” with Dragon Champions, killing one after one, with merely a tea-break.
However, those minions don’t look like dragons at all. The Icy guy , champion of Jormag looks like some variation of Icebrood from what I remember, Destroyer of Life, the Primo buddy is just a destroyer and Zhaitan’s thingy is undead pirate.
It can be that this novel is just poorly written (worst of all three novels, Jeff Grub rocks) and shouldn’t be treaten as any part of serious lore besides making buddy-buddy Edge of Destiny and then breaking it on Kralkatorrik’s fight, but dunno…

Erm… Not all dragon champions are dragon-shaped. Despite the title “dragon champion” all that such means is a very powerful minion of the Elder Dragons.

Eye of Zhaitan, Mouth of Zhaitan, Morgus Lethe (a risen norn), Svanir (aka nornbear(pig)), and so forth are all dragon champions. Kudu even turned himself into a mutli-dragon dragon champion.

Despite this though, Scarlet being a sylvari prevents the whole “being a dragon minion” let alone “being a dragon champion” given their immunity – until it is proven that they can be corrupted for new reasons that was previously impossible (different means or something… though we only got mention of them being immune to Zhaitan’s corruption in-game, an old interview mentioned their immunity in a general sense a long time ago).

the novel “The Edge of Destiny” we can read that our überteam are on the hillarious cheese “killing spree” with Dragon Champions, killing one after one, with merely a tea-break.

Just want to note two things:

You said the Dragonspawn was an icebrood not a dragon… well, yes, it’d be an icebrood because all of Jormag’s minions are icebrood, this would include the Claw of Jormag. Same comment to your mention of Primordus’ champion (Destroyer of Life) being “just a destroyer”.

And EoD, while poor in quality, is heavy in lore and it is to be taken as serious lore – except possibly the description of locations, since the said descriptions are based on pre-redesign early beta designs (like Hoelbrak and Lion’s Arch).

There’s a secret deep below to find

Sometimes to change you must destroy

A fire is rising you cannot contain

Primordius would not need assistance to get out of the earth. He should be quite capable of getting himself out considering he has numerous destroyers at his disposal, can manipulate lava/fire/rock and is a big a** dragon.

I don’t think destroyer spawns will tell you a lot. We know that Primordius has a vast network of caverns underneath Tyria and it’s probable that he can create more, so realistically the Destroyers can pop up anywhere. Also not really sure why you have circles over Divinity’s Reach? The only situation I can think of there being destroyers was when the Watchknights were transforming into enemies that we had fought previously?

Legendary Pyroxis (Destroyer) is one of the six possible Legendary bosses that can be encountered in The Crown Pavilion during the Queen’s Jubilee.

jeah I wanted to connect the circles from scarlets monitor with something. But there are much more circles in scarlets monitor.

That’s what Foxx meant. None of the enemies in the Crown Pavillion were real- they were just watchknights covered over with illusions.

What’s the circle in Fireheart? And one you missed- in Dredgehaunt, one of the tombs you need to use a key on has destroyers in it.

Maybe so, but there is one thing that strikes me- Primordus awoke beneath the eastern edge of the Shiverpeaks, and yet east of the Shiverpeaks is the only region we don’t see destroyers in GW2.
