Scarlet is coming, let's analyze the poem
I find the “It’s almost time for time to stop” line to be quite interesting.
Would that point towards Aeatherblades actually being tied into time-travelling or time-magic in some way or form?

That’s a possibility but it could also mean that something devastating will happen that will, in the NPC’s minds anyways, make time feel like it has stopped. It could also be possible she hinting at chronomancy or time traveling technology to throw off people and in reality some deception or illusion will take place.
Chaos always finds a way, who you think Evil learned it from?
Where is this poem from?
Your world is built on fog and sand
Wonder if this is meant to be taken literally. Since this sounds like a terrorist threat basically, I doubt it. But “fog” = The Mists and “sand” = soil? World is built upon the Mists mixing with ground? I doubt that they’d put such a thing in but shrug.
On the twentieth day she’ll start her games
Ah, yet another example of ArenaNet screwing over old lore if this comes from an in-universe viewpoint. Even with the +5 days to the Mouvelian calendar Angel blatantly retconned in with no regards, the calendar still starts at the beginning of Spring (aka mid-May) and holds no months. Lets say that in comparison, Wintersday (aka new years for Tyria aka Spring Equinox) is always on our equivalent of March 20th, the Mouvelian calendar only has 90 day seasons (which is now screwy with no explanation for how the seasons divide thanks to the +5 days) so their Summer solstice would be our June 18th; 20 days into that being June 28, their Fall equinox would be our October 6th.
GGAnet, twentieth day of what. Certainly nothing on the calendar even after blatant retcons that you once despised doing to the point of Jeff Grubb explicitly telling us how something wasn’t a retcon on the forums (via Stephane Lo Presti mind you).

It feels more like saying “party time is almost over” than “we come from the future, to stop time” or anything.
It’s just a fancy way of saying “It’s almost time to stop,” basically, for the sake of rhythm.
Scarlet seems to me, from this, to be someone who hates seeing others enjoying themselves (screwing things up at Dragonbash and now here, perhaps having something to do with Canach getting those pollens which ruined the times of the vacationers in Southsun). But at the same time, someone who wants to have fun herself – in a sadistic way.

It was recently sent out as PR for the next patch.
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/news/1220-watch-out-for-scarlet-on-august-20th/
Edit: Also the “Almost time for time to stop” bit may have more significance than you stated, as a watch was sent with the poem, it must symbolize something. Perhaps just the whole watchwork aesthetic, but I’m not sure.
(edited by Zyphent.2967)
Uh Konig, by “20th day” it means August 20th as in the day of the patch lol.
So on the 20th Scarlet (or whoever) will put her plan in motion and hope that Kryta is burned to the ground.

When you consider it from that perspective, is it worth analysing the poem? It’s clearly a fun little out of game way to promote interest in the content. It’s possible there aren’t any actual clues in the words. It is interesting that a watch was packaged with the poem. Obviously the Watchknights are going haywire again. Do we know who created them? Who was the inventor?
Scarlett is just a goon of Balthek, duh!
“Tick tock goes the clock
It’s almost time for time to stop
Something you all must understand
Your world is built on fog and sand”
For me this means the mists. That either something is going to happen to connect something to the mists or that something is going to happen in the mists. All that talk of “time”, just hints at the mists for me.
“You’re out of time, your jig is done
It’s time for Scarlet to have her fun
She has some hard lessons to teach
To the people of Divinity’s Reach”
I guess this just means the current festivity is going to stop, and “Scarlet” is going to show up: what will happen when she shows I am now sure.
Third. “So mark the date in permanent ink
The hour is later than you think
On the twentieth day she’ll start her games
And warm her hands over Kryta’s flames!”
I think this is more of a message to the player base then anything ingame related: though the “warm her hands over Kryta’s flames!” bit does seem to hit at destruction happening. Also if you combine it with “To the people of Divinity’s Reach” from the second section, then I guess we know the target.
Overall just guessing, I think a big explosion is going to happen, that is some how going to be connected to the mists? Maybe connecting the Asura gate to the mists just like in LA, when they tried to get to Southsun?

Yes, I am very well aware of that. My point is this:
This poem is – supposedly – written in-universe, meaning by Scarlet herself most likely. There is no 20th day for this to be on in lore, but Anet is so intent on keeping their LS-RL sync going – to the point where they blatantly retcon the calendar. However, it doesn’t match up and the 20th day mention becomes inconsistent with the lore.
Now, if this is not written in-universe, then it works. But it seems to be written in-universe.

Maybe they’ll just blow something up that is dear to Queen Jennah. Like her precious new pavilion. Or I suppose they could do quite a bit of harm by loading one of their airships with explosives, and crashing it straight into the the royal palace. Then again, that may be a bit too similar to a certain real world event people would rather not be reminded of.

“Tick tock goes the clock

Is there a clocktower in Divinity’s Reach? Besides that, what some others have noted, maybe Watchknights going haywire some more or stopping altogether. On an off note, since this is the only thread I see discussing this, might mean swapping out Battle of Kyhlo for some other map over in PvP. It’d fit in with the last line fairly well.
If that’s not the case, then while I like the idea of it being related to the Mists and the world line seems to go with it…We should also remember what Kryta’s all about. Swamps and beaches. Kryta’s always been stuck amidst swamps and coasts. It’s fun to cast our gaze outward, but we should keep in mind that this part of the Living Story is focusing on events to do with Kryta.
You’re out of time, your jig is done
It’s time for Scarlet to have her fun
She has some hard lessons to teach
To the people of Divinity’s Reach
While this is out there and I don’t really expect it for the same reasons I don’t expect (or really want) the Infinity Ball storyline to have involvement here, I do see a slim possibility for Riot Alice to be involved. Red hair, anti-oligarchy, and so on. However, if the individual encountered in the Opening Ceremony of the Queen’s Jubilee is Scarlet, then that’s a quick nope.
Main reasons I thought of her were the lessons to teach part. Seemed like something Alice might want to do. The big question here is, is this just a fancy way of talking about attacking the populace or is there something more intended behind it, like trying to actually stir them to some realization. Very unclear about that.
So mark the date in permanent ink
The hour is later than you think
On the twentieth day she’ll start her games
And warm her hands over Kryta’s flames!"
The games part here is what throws me away from thinking there’s any major ideological realization bit going for the attacks. What’s more interesting to me here though is the word choice with the whole permanent ink part. I honestly think it’s just further emphasizing the other PR bits leading up to this event regarding the fact that this event will have permanent effect on the world.
Might be digging too much into it here, but he hour is later than you think line has me wondering if that’s straightforward, like they’re coming sooner than you think, or a jab at the populace, like things are worse out here than you realize. Which in itself would be a good shot at the nobility of Divinity’s Reach, but why they’d be trying to get them realizing that is beyond me. I’m betting on the obvious with most of these lines.

The poem reads a bit too crazy for me. It doesn’t really read like a work of a mastermind pulling strings from the background. It sounded more like the work of a anarchist lone wolf type.
As for my take on the poem itself…
Tick tock goes the clock
It’s almost time for time to stop
The time of something is about to end. Could be humans, way of life, civilizations, etc.
Something you all must understand
Your world is built on fog and sand
Our world is built on lies, deceptions, false truths, and illusions.
You’re out of time, your jig is done
It’s time for Scarlet to have her fun
Scarlet found out what’s going on, possibly who is doing it, and she is going to have “fun” revealing it.
She has some hard lessons to teach
To the people of Divinity’s Reach
Most likely going to reveal the “truth”, with force, to the humans of DR.
So mark the date in permanent ink
The hour is later than you think
I got a 12th hour reference here. This celebration is suppose to be about humanity’s strength and survival. Scarlet is going to show them that they are closer to destruction than they think.
On the twentieth day she’ll start her games
And warm her hands over Kryta’s flames!
20th of August. Her taking comfort and enjoyment from Kryta’s destruction.
She might be in a leadership position, but I still have doubts Scarlet is the one pulling all the strings. Though with all the clock references, it would be a nice surprise if she turned out to be a chronomancer, or maybe a nice tie in with the personal story; she turns out to be a sylvari from the other Pale Tree.
The letter is a terrorist thread against the government (Queen Jennah) and Kryta’s capital (Divinity’s Reach). The terrorist group concerned (Aetherblades) has a international reach. Their terrorist activities span across many lands as conveyed through airships attacks. All this co-insided with Divinity’s Reach own establishment of an Asura gates international transport system HUB as convened by Queen Jennah’s Jubilee. This hub is similar to LA’s asura gates hub. This system hub may or (may not) be made available to the general public for general use in the forth coming Queen’s speech on the 20th.
Conclusion: Aetherblades main focus in on Kryta and on Kryta’s politics/government.
Edit: In addition asura gates go into the mist (WvWvW) as well. This allso co-inside with forth coming new WvWvW maps. The new maps major change is the emptying out all the water from the central lake/s in the borderland/s. This would make the central area/s expose a lot of sandy lake bed regions. at ‘Your world is built on fog (the mist) and sand’.

Divinities Reach and Kryta. It speaks anarchism clearly. She seems bothered by the established rule in Kryta (both the Captains Council and the Queen), and she seems especially annoyed by the fun and games that Jennah is hosting in her new pavilion. And it is clear that she intends to disrupt the festivities with games of her own.
It almost screams that they’ll attack the pavilion. Maybe they’ll create a new Great Collapse where the old one was.

I think you guys are missing the point of the “fog and sand” bit. It makes no sense for that to be meant literally, but they are both symbols of impermanence, things that are wiped away as if they never were. Combine that with the “Kryta in flames” bit- either this is ANet overselling their release, or Scarlet has sufficient means to bring down an entire kingdom. Scary thought, and it means that we’ve been underestimating her.
Also, I doubt this was written from an in-universe perspective. Feels more like a deliberate tease targeting the player-base, and there’s nothing in it to suggest an in-universe author, with one aforementioned detail suggesting the opposite.
Kryta is in a fairly precarious political situation – in fact, it probably wouldn’t be unfair to compare it to a civil war being fought by proxy. It probably wouldn’t take much of a push, if that push is in the right spot – successfully assassinating Queen Jennah, for instance – to bring it down.
We also had the Molten Alliance presenting a credible threat to both the Black Citadel and Hoelbrak, if that was actually the result of Scarlet’s work. In all, she seems to be behaving as a kind of evil Master of Whispers – she doesn’t have an army capable of taking down a nation, but she knows how to apply leverage to the right spots to achieve her desired results.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
Still, if Scarlet wanted to kill Queen Jennah, announcing it in a cryptic poem would be a rather Batman-villain way of doing it. If I were in her position, and I seriously wanted to overthrow Queen Jennah’s rule, I would not give her any warning.
That is, unless I wanted to provoke Jennah to do something stupid. Like surrounding herself with her brand new army of Watchknights.
The mysterious stranger, who I assume to be Scarlet, had a perfect opportunity to assassinate Jennah and get away, but she didn’t. So, we can assume that’s not her plan – at least not yet.
True. Possibly more likely is that she’s planning to undermine Jennah, similar to how the White Mantle and the Ministry have done or tried to do. She’s proven to be a hard target to assassinate, but if you can show that the Queen is powerless to prevent you from causing havoc in Divinity’s Reach after you publicly warned her when the attack would take place…
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
Yes, that also confuses me. She’s like an old villain, twirling her Sylvari mustache at the audience, and then poofing away. She’s clearly more interested in drawing attention to herself, and making a statement, than assassinating the Queen.

@Konig, about the calendar. Btw why did they do that, To match their living story?
If yes, what’s about that a Tyrian day is 3 hours to us (where only 1 hour is the night cycle)? Doesn’t really match our calendar either. What does that 5 days change to Arenanet?
Fear The Crazy [Huns]
The connection between the Mouvelian calendar and our real-world calendar is a practical one. Thanks to your question, we had a big discussion here. The Mouvelian calendar was established way back when Guild Wars was first being created. At that time, we had no idea we’d ever be doing Living World content like we are now. We’ve decided that we’re going to change the Mouvelian calendar to a 365-day year. Here’s the official in-game asuran announcement:
“Friends and fellows. Due to recent (amazing!) reasoning by scholars of the Astronomagical Society, we are pleased to announce that we have added the five hidden days to our calendar year! That’s five extra days we’ve recognized for you to advance your work before the annual review. Gifts and gratitude are unnecessary. We merely acknowledged them officially; we did not create them. May all your projects be almost as successful as ours.” — Mikk

Problem Logan wouldn’t let her do something like that. It’ll be him, the Shining Blade, and Seraph.
It seems people are just being hopeful the queen will be killed than anything else. I think this Sylvari’s true objective is something on a larger scale. Perhaps a Shock and Awe tactic where the Aetherblades, perhaps utilizing new technology combining the aspects of the molten alliance and inquest, strike areas that are culturally important to the humans. This would be the ‘push’ needed to get the Ministry to try and overthrow the Queen, as they would most likely use the attack to declare her unfit to rule.
Or perhaps she won’t even attack Divinity’s Reach. Maybe it a feint to have all the players gather at the human capital while her and the Aetherblades strike Lion’s Arch once again. It seems the objective of the previous attack was to kill the Pirate’s Council completely not just a single member. Perhaps with the very ‘heroes’ that thwarted the plan previous at another location the aetherblades believe they’ll succeed. They might even rescue their imprison captain and Canach. It could be a plot not to harm but to strength humanity’s hold by giving a opportunity to the Queen to reclaim Lion’s Arch as human territory. I mean do we really interact with the pirate council in any personal story or quest? Will Lion’s Arch being under the Queen’s domain really alter anything for new players? She’ll most likely make it a neutral ground for the races to meet and thus it will still be the ‘melting pot’ of Tyria.

Totally pointless thing to do by Arenanet and I really really can’t see why they had to do this. And btw 5 Tyrian days = 15 hours.
So I want Halloween every 46 days, because 1 day to us is 8 days to Tyria.

This is a great idea. I’m not sure if GW’s writers are this smart, but it would make for a solid plan. Have everyone’s eyes focused on Divinity’s Reach, and then strike Lion’s Arch, freeing Mai Trin and killing the captain’s council.

And yet the Lionguard is still fully active in Lion’s Arch. It is also extremely unlikely that they have decided to slack on the security so soon after the attack, especially when the same group is still active and have made concrete threats.

To be fair, the aetherblades seem more numerous than the Lionguard. And the Lionguard did a poor job at keeping the Captain’s Council safe the last time. It was mostly due to the intervention of the players, that further casualties were prevented. But now with the festivities in Divinity’s Reach, all the players will be out of town.
Frankly I think it would be an awesome move if they literally invaded Lion’s Arch, while the players are off elsewhere.

A significant force supported perhaps a Inquest golem or even Aetherblade watchknights could apply the necessary pressure to break through the Lionguard’s defenses. Also how often do the Lionguard need adventurers help? It seems they always shorthanded even in the city itself. Perhaps that the weakness needed to successfully pull off such a plan?
And Mad Queen Malafide beat me to the explanation lol.

I don’t understand why a sylvari would go to all this trouble. A charr, asura, or human I could understand, but not a sylvari. It doesn’t seem to jive with lore. Why isn’t she part of the nightmare court, and if she is part of the nightmare court, why would she care about Jenna and Divinity’s reach. Why would any sylvari care about Jenna and Divinity’s Reach?

We no of one sylvari that isn’t from the pale tree. One that is apparently far away. If she isn’t from the pale tree, why would she travel all this way just to be mad at Jenna? I don’t think Scarlet is Sylvari. What is the possibility that Scarlett is associated with the Jungle Dragon?

That is just as farfetch as that Sylvari being from another tree. It is likely the Sylvari has been misidentified as Scarlet and she intentionally using the name to hide the motives of the real Scarlet. I mean there no reason for Scarlet to actually reveal herself after her minions failed her. It makes more sense to continue from manipulating from the shadows. Perhaps it a ploy to throw off the Order of Whispers as they also masters of stealth.

I think we could look at the phrase “Tick tock goes the clock. It’s almost time for time to stop.” and either say “for time to stop” meaning the end of kryta as we know it or it has something to do with the watchknights. If you look at a watchknight ingame you can clearly see that there is some clockwork mechanism in them. which leads to the question; when will the clock strike twelve? We can safely assume that another aetherblade attack will befall Divinity’s Reach. We know that Scarlet isn’t scared of attacking during public events so it’s clear they will strike at the queen’s speech and they know that there will be alot of seraph and possibly shining blade present. She must be certain she can either strike quickly and assassinate the queen while infiltrated in their ranks(Countess anise anyone? Red hair? Scarlet? It could also just be the watchknights though if you want to look at it in a boring way.) or have an overpowering amount of troops(Aetherblade+Watchknights) or have a weapon of some sort that can turn the tide of a battle. Or she might just be kittening crazy, that’s also a possibility. What do you guys think?
Also we must get on identifying E. It’s very unlikely that it’s Evon Gnashblade or Ellen Kiel.
Plot twist! Mr. E is Faren!
The truth of Kasmeer going to Southsun was to contact E, and that’s why she defended Faren when she calls him a pain.
We already know that Faren doesn’t like corruption in the Ministry, and he’d have good access to such information, unlike Kasmeer’s family that has fallen on hard times.

All this time talk has me thinking about the lost ‘chronomancer’ profession …
Not all non-nightmare sylvari are goody good two shoes, just look at Canach. The dream doesn’t control the sylvari, so nothing stops one from going power mad, crazy or Disney villain.
But there are reasons behind his actions. He’s sort of an unwitting villian. Scarlet, on the other had, seems to have an all out crush against Jenna and Divinity’s reach. She’s also had time to organize and gather resources. That’s an awful lot to accomplish even for a first born.
Also, Sylvari seem rather aloof to the affairs of others. Not really goody two shoes, for the most part they just don’t care if it doesn’t threaten them. Dragon’s threaten them, so they care.
I think, as that letter was sent in the real world to companies, that it’s kind of “a mix” of tyrian facts and real world dates. Like the character from inside the game warns the players from the real world, and that was used to rhyme the poem with that date.
Plot twist! Mr. E is Faren!

While it seems like just a joke… I personally think that it would be super awesome if Faren resulted being faking that he fakes to be skilled and corageous but actually being it with all the fake faking being his cover.
He is there for the Kasmeer presentation (and with her working as detective it makes sense that she was there investigating something) and the attack on the Pavillion.
He doesn’t strike me as the guy that is described on Marjory’s story as Mr.E (though that kind of fancy wordplay nickname could fit him, and it’s confirmed it’s a wordplay and not the name letter as for example in spanish he is Mr.Io for “misterio”), but if he is faking that he fakes (I’m loving saying that now :P) all his personallity and skills, it could be like that.
The only problem is that Marjory never sees Mr.E, so I don’t think she would know who Kasmeer should meet or even that he is a noble, and that if he covered his identity to Marjory, I don’t think he would present himself in the middle of the beach to Kasmeer.
(edited by Lokheit.7943)
While yes it was a joke, when I elaborated upon it, I realized that it would actually fit not only his position but his personality.
As to Kasmeer and Marjory knowing Faren is Mr. E – I don’t think that either would need to know – Faren would merely act as the contact between the two, since it seems neither know Mr. E’s true identity. He would merely be present acting as the “go between guy” when there really isn’t a “go between guy.”
Plus, Faren is a mesmer, so he’d be able to disguise himself, his voice, and/or his features.

Not exactly lore related, but does the scan and meter of the poem bug anyone else? The first couplet seems correct. After that, it’s just a jumble of syllables that happen to rhyme on the end.
This is a very interesting point. If that’s where the story goes, I’ll really like it.

When it gets to the “lessons to teach/Divinity’s Reach” part it throws off the rythm for me. The rest seems good, though. A fumble on the writer’s part or intentional hint at Scarlet being a calculating, but still crazy woman? Not sure.

Tick tock goes the clock
It’s almost time for time to stop
Something you all must understand
Your world is built on fog and sand
You’re out of time, your jig is done
It’s time for Scarlet to have her fun
She has some hard lessons to teach
To the people of Divinity’s Reach
So mark the date in permanent ink
The hour is later than you think
On the twentieth day she’ll start her games
And warm her hands over Kryta’s flames!
She’s a chronomancer!
