If there was anyone right now that Scarlet would kill, given half the chance, its Queen Jennah. Strange, truly, that a mad salad would have it in for a human regent. I’m sure Queen Jennah hasn’t done anything to provoke this attention either. The bottom line is: Scarlet’s just got beef with her; Scarlet’s little list of naughty and nice says so and we all know that what mad people write, must be true.
Scarlet’s got tricks too, she intends to use to eliminate the naughty people on her list. They are, among others, porting, cloning and cloaking. They are, at first glance, the tool belt of skills from every engineer’s waist and, for that matter, every mesmer’s. And mesmer’s are the vilest of vile on Scarlet’s little list, because mesmers are elaborate liars.
There are lies one tells with the tongue and there are also lies that one lives.
Scarlet thought she saw something, but it was a lie. When asked, “What did you see?” she responded, “Everything”. But it was not to be – she didn’t notice that what she thought was just the Pale Tree might be something more; she didn’t notice that Mender Serimon’s face “soured” when he was ignored, suggesting the concealment of a deeper, darker identity. No, she didn’t notice any of these things. Neither, for that matter, do we…
But she does notice some things; she glimpses the faces of those whose secrets she now knows; those who whisper to her of spider webs and hidden knives, and her head rings with dark words: “Face the truth…the Dream is a Nightmare!”.
Caithe comes across as “aloof and distant” but is nothing more than a cold blooded killer…hiding behind a facade…
Queen Jennah hides too. Clones are her specialty – she lives in perpetual fear of betrayal yet outwardly looks calm and collected. Moreover, she commissioned the creation of robots capable of mesmer-like deception to continue the ruse…
Kasmeer, who ripped open the lie concealing the true nature of the Tower of Nightmares, is no more than a liar herself – and funnily enough a mesmer. She claims to be a parentless human noble, but is probably no more than a charlatan…
And last but by no means least, the Pale Tree herself: Even she embellishes her true form with an avatar (although she of all of these examples has no real reason to), concealing her identity. Her children, too, she embellishes, forming them after humans in an effort to ingratiate them to others.
Liars, they are all pretty little liars.
Oh yes, you can be sure that Scarlet’s got beef with mesmers.
A Very Merry Wintersday!
