Sea fights
I think it would work nicely if we were going to sail to a location like the fire islands and on the way you get attacked by monsters and pirates and maybe awesome scenes where the boat rocks heavily in the big oceans to make it really dynamic.
The fight scenes would be monsters climbing on board from the sea and you fight them off and another could be when pirates attack you have to board their ship and fight them but keep a few people behind to defend against the enemy pirates boarding your vessel and then you can loot their ships for good loot when you win.
Also they make the fights really hard and server wide like the tequatl fight so theres huge numbers and if you fail you have to return back to LA and try again.
Sorry back to the topic i would think that it could be best used as a journey feature when we sail to other parts of Tyria, maybe we may even go to Cantha?
It would be really nice if they could put that in game. The first thing they could do was improve the Zaitan fight. So until Zaitan is sorted any thought of nautical combat can wait.
I could be wrong, but I believe I remember reading somewhere that the reason they don’t is the difficulty of making moving terrain, especially in any remotely smooth manner. With my own personal experiences of a myriad of problems with the airship portions of Arah, I can believe it.
Difficult? – Yes.
Impossible? – No.
Would we bear with their mistakes while they improve this feat? – Yes.
Would players like it? – Probably. I would.
Could ANet earn some extra money with this? – Yes. On style.
Where on the map would we sail? What would quests look like? What would be story behind this? How many types of ship would exist, how many could be owned by single player? How many players could sail on a small trade ship? How many on war galley? Will they finally give us raid group? Will there be contested areas for pvp/gvg pvp? – This, my fellow gamers, i ask you.
Would we bear with their mistakes while they improve this feat? – Yes.
Only if they fixed it so using a moving waypoint has no chance of you falling out of the back of the ship.

Currently I am not aware of any tech in the game that provides structure deformation (WvW fortified positions are rather simple if you look at the implementation of it – each wall is a single entity that is damaged/destroyed as as whole). Source: from watching the PvP livestreams where the map editor is demonstrated and watching how things actually work in the game. Ship combat comes with tricky territory – blowing holes in your enemies’ ships is a pretty important mechanic and sadly I don’t think the GW tech supports this. My gut feel (having dealt with mesh deformation/soft body physics before) is that this wouldn’t be cheap to implement at all.
Ships are invulnerable with mounted cannons and players can fire upon each other
- Difficult: no.
- Would this live up to your expectations: definitely not.
- Would players like it: from a sPvP perspective, maybe.
Ships are made up of hundreds of entities each with their own health, enough entities destroyed means your ship sinks
- Possible: yes.
- Difficult: maybe. Depends on how expensive the damage/AOE checks currently are.
- Would this live up to your expectations: the community would probably be quite divided.
- Would players like it: maybe. They may enjoy it more if it was presented as a temporary LS map. Keeping it permanent would eventually expose the fact that it’s a hacked up solution.
As the book describes it
- Possible: yes. Battlefield 4 does it with their buildings (conceptually there is no difference between a building and a ship).
- Expensive: very very very expensive in terms of both time and money.
- Qualifies as a complete game concept on it’s own: yes.
- GW2 timeframe: extremely unlikely.
- Recommendation: play Arche Age.
Bit of a strange discussion to have in the Lore forum, seems more like a suggestion.
Epistemic.8013: Guys this is bullkitten a sentient plant creature is hitting these
wooden doors with fireballs and it’s working.
Well, it started with asking about lore that could be used if this feat ever becomes available. But we strayed a bit from topic there.
(also, i think suggestion sub forum is closed for posting)
Idea for this didn’t came from ArcheAge. To be honest i learned of that game just days ago. It came from Allods Online, an mmorpg game that had ship fights since 2009. Since i’m not sure how much we can talk about other games on forum, if you want to hear how they put it together, i’ll gladly send you PM.
It is my belief that we have enough lore to justify having ship fights in game. Also, i am sure they are capable enough to make this happen if they decide to. Will they do it? I don’t know. Surely they have their assessment team for ideas like this one.
What we can talk about is if we would like to see it in game, and how it could be connected to the current story.
