Something I find odd
With the Asura gates, we have instantaneous long-distance travel. I assume the gates can even open portals to anywhere close by, which would explain how we can teleport to them but not to a spot without one. While this is obviously a technology far beyond what we have today, there is no way to instantly communicate over long distances. This is evident in the personal story missions where we have to journey back to prior locations just to talk to particular npcs. Does anyone else find this odd?
Not really.
The asura aren’t known for sharing the secrets of their technology, after all. Use of it? Sure, for a fee. How it works? Not so much.
Plus, teleporting physical, solid, matter is different than sending electricity that captured and transmits sound wavelengths.
Though short-distance communications is possible, as is short-distance video output/input, but not long distance as far as we know.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

That’s the thing. Teleporting physical matter is a lot more complex than teleporting energy. Considering how valuable information is during wartimes, you would think any entrepreneurial asurans would be all over communication arrays. It’s a gold mine!
Those carrier pigeons seem to be pretty darn “instant.” Too bad the player can’t address NPCs that way.
Idk I’m wondering how you recieve communication within FotM, also there is a mail service which appears to serve the purpose. However I do think it is a good question but I think that the dredge might be the most advanced in terms of sound technology.
True, Fractals is one of the cases of voice communication. It could be some reason like sound transmission is more of a complex thing than material transportation in the gw universe. If they’re advanced in some things, they could be bad at others
It may just be a case of the type of technology. Player races don’t seem to have much advancement in electronics.
There’s a heart quest in Metrica Province where you communicate with the female asura via her golem, kinda like a big walking phonebox.
Aren’t we all forgetting that Oola had a voice-messenging system in her lab 250 years ago? Asura have been keeping that method of transmission secret.
Asura gates have to be paired. Each one in LA points to a twin in the relevant city and so on. The waypoints are a different story, and as best i can tell there are no explanation for them in game outside of the starting area scouts pointing out their practical uses. Hell, one of the opening asura stories are all about non-gate teleporting magitech. It is short range and barely working.

There is not much need for it, because of magic. charr seems to be the furthest ahead in non-magical tech, and they focus mostly on heavy mechanical machinery in the form of steam and internal combustion, while the asura has basically replaced electrical and electronic systems with crystal magitech.

snaff (i think his name was) developped a portable gate that you can plop anywhere and travel anywhere (i think so anyways) it was in edge of destiny
Kiel Replacement Movement

Yes, but it wasn’t really made in bulk.
Though it could be the basing of waypoint systems, lorewise. If so, then only adventurers have them – if not, then it’s a one-of-a-kind thing. And you can’t travel anywhere, but rather somewhere you’ve been before.

Right. My point is that our RL tech alows us to more easily transport sound over matter becasue we use electrical advancement. The playable races do not, however so there’s no reason to assume it will be just as easy for them as it is for us becasue we can see the asura magitech is not a 1:1 replacement of our own RL technology.
