I just finished watching a youtube video about some of the lore in GW2, and something grabbed my attention and I needed to research further. In the video they state that in lore the Black Citadel was built on top of the ruins of the city Ascalon. But when looking at the maps from around the time of the searing, and comparing it to the map of today, Ascalon was to the east of where Black Citadel is today. In fact the plains of ashford map has the city ruins marked to the east.

So is the lore wrong? Are the charr telling a tall tale? Or is Mr Woodenpotatoes sadly mistaken?

IIRC it’s built atop Rin which was a major city in Ascalon.

WP makes a lot of mistakes, so him having a mis-speak isn’t unlikely. But as Techstriker and Killul said, the Black Citadel was built over Rin, the second capital of Ascalon (after Drascir fell, Rin became the capital until its fall). You can even find an area in the Black Citadel to the south dubbed “Ruins of Rin” – the ruin placement is actually pretty accurate to their placement in GW1.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

It’d be off the map just above Blazeridge Steppes – the only Ascalonian city struck by the Dragonbrand, ironically enough. If my placement deduction’s right, at least.

ok, maybe I mis-understood.

It’s a little bit confusing because most people (understandably) think that Ascalon City was the past capital of Ascalon, but actually Rin was.

Sort of like almost everyone thinks the capital of New York State is New York City, but it’s not – it’s Albany.

So you were correct that the Black Citadel was built over the old Ascalonian capital city… that just isn’t Ascalon City.
