Soo horses...
There was a long debate about this on the GW Guru forums a while back. It’s assumed that horses do, or at least did exist. The Canthans have a celestial horse (even though in the game it’s just a re-skinned Kirin) and one of the emperors was supposedly killed when his horse threw him. Nobody’s ever really bothered explaining why we don’t see horses. My guess is since we only hear of them in historic accounts and see them as long dead skeletons, they somehow went extinct.
There is concept art with horses in it. So it is known that there is a possibility of horses. They are probably wild and in regions that are not yet open to us… shrug I’m not sure. But I love horses and would enjoy seeing them.
Here’s the concept piece. Upon further research, I find that the arches are Human, likely from Ascalon, which we know is in ruins, now Charr territory. Maybe the Charr did eat them. ;(
weren’t Horses trained in Orr? but I didn’t see any GW2,tho
An NPC I ran across (can’t remember where, maybe the Harathi Hinterlands?) Explains how to differentiate centaur tribes, and references how they look like different breeds of horse. So while they may be extinct, people in the current age certainly know a lot about them it seems.
Horses are non existent on the planet Tyria. Horses are exclusive on planet Earth. It is not the dolphins as some people say, it is the horses. Even Tyria have dolphins.
Charr ate them all. True story.
And they were delicious!
Charr ate them all. True story.
And they were delicious!
I can’t refute that logic.
Charr ate them all. True story.
If you made them non-tameable, people might get freaked out by getting a slab of red meat from a horse.
If you made them pets, everyone would want to ride them and GW2 is noticeably devoid of mounts.
I don’t recall a non-centaur horse in GW1, but I probably wasn’t looking. Any concrete examples?
Speaking of centaurs, how did humans end up in a war with the centaurs when things looked so promising when Mizra helped out in GW1?
Well, Mirza was in Elona. Friendly centaurs are almost an impossibility in Tyria, at least for now.
If you accept the idea that the game play you are experiencing is not literally what is happening but say… a story that is being told of your life, if you never really interacted with horses, horses would never enter into the story.
There are definitely horses in Tyria, and the NPCs mention them both in GW1 and GW2.
They existed at the time of Orr, since there were undead horsemen in GW1. The imagery of knights on horseback persists even to the present day Tyria (check out the pictures of the festival in DR, for example), and two of the guild symbols it is available is that of unicorns.

There are also horses mentioned in Edge of Destiny, page 97:
In Edge of Destiny a herd of wild horses is seen through an asura gate when Logan, Rytlock, and Caithe flee from the Destroyer horde in the Dwarven ruins.
“Visions. Beautiful visions… a grassy plain where wild horses ran… a deep lagoon encircled by leaning palms…”
There’s horses in the concept art:
This lore bit here also mentions skilled horsemen:
And here’s a dude in original GW that mentions riding horses:

Hey, hey you! I was riding my horse to the other side of town and I ran out of hey to feed him to get there. Spare a few gold so I can feed him and be on my way?
So there are definitely horses in the lore, all over the place.
The better question is, why don’t we SEE any horses in Tyria?
You were disappointed that you got a pet??
You people are unbelievable!
Charr ate them all. True story.
Okay, okay! I admit it! My people ate them all! We kept saying one more couldn’t hurt, and then they were gone! We’re sorry!

So yes, horses exist. They weren’t extinct by GW1’s time at least, or by Edge of Destiny’s time (which was only 5 years before GW2, and I doubt they’d go extinct in 5 year’s time, though it’s possible). So the question truly is: where the hell are they?
Some were in Orr, some were in Cantha. Some are… somewhere in the world accessible by an asura gate, seemingly in the middle of no where.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

They could just be incredibly rare in the world of Tyria & thus either all be wild or exclusively owned/used by the rich/nobles.
If horses were in the game we would have countless players asking why they can’t have mounts.
Anet: “There are no mounts planned in GW2”
Player: “But I see horses all over the place, why can’t i ride them?!”

I’m likely necroing an old thread, but with the advent of the Halloween event, I think it’s worth mentioning that one of the ghosts from the first part of the Mad Memories quest met her demise when her horse trampled her:

They’re not in game because Anet doesn’t want people whining about mounts.
didn’t work…they still do

that was 500 years ago though.
charr totally ate them all.
charr totally ate them all.
A guy I work with claims to have actually eaten horse (he was in Mongolia at the time, it’s a pretty common food source there). He says it was quite tasty.
^ that only proves the theory of “charr ate them to extinction” even more.
not that it’s a serious theory.
Clearly it was not the Charr but Sylvari that ate the horses! We know from the books that they are meat eaters!
It was probably a matter of survival, eat the horses, before the horses ate them!
Either that or a mad asura scientist, while trying to make an asura horse hybrid to combat centuars, accidentally killed them all!
It could totally happen!
What do you think happened to Gargoyles?
^ i’m pretty sure horses were long gone by the time asuras and sylvaris popped up.
As Alaundria mentioned, one of the Halloween ghosts, Serene, was killed by her horse.
There’s also a GW1 Halloween quest added this year about helping locate the Mad King’s invisible steed, a pony named Gum Drops. What’s noteworthy about that – since the Mad King could potentially have an animal no one else had – is that the Emissary makes clear during that quest that the PC should reasonably know what a pony looks like. (The line of conversation makes sense in context.)
So while there may not be horses now, there would have been at one time, and they would seemingly have been sufficiently prevalent that the average person would know the basics about them.
One other thing of import, to add to the presence of horses in game…
Go to Divinity’s Reach, by the gates. You’ll actually find a collection of carriages. And they don’t seem to be the type to be pulled by oxen or dolyak.
I forgot to add that some of the Seraph refer to the centaurs derogatorily as “ponies” if you listen to their dialog, which also indicates that they have a clear concept of what horses are.
(As an explanation for those who aren’t horse people: although there are exceptions for some breeds, in general the difference between a horse and a pony is a height cutoff. In most cases they’re the same type of animal, which is why I’m referring to horses and ponies interchangeably in my posts.)

i know this is slightly off topic, but as a non-horse person, i do have to ask:
i always thought ponies were just baby horses, is that not the case?

Ponies are technically small horses, usually 12-14.3 hands high. Of course, lots of people use the term pony to replace the term ‘foal’ or ‘filly’ when referring to baby horses.

Alright, thanks for that.
Hopefully we’ll see a horse at some point, or maybe a ghost of a horse or whatever lol.
PS – Lack of horses doesn’t mean people won’t inquire about mounts. Hard to believe, I know, but there are other mountable options.
Yes, but having horses in the game would bring up major speculation about the possibility of mounts, as well as major complaints about not being able to ride them.
But those speculations and complaints are already present. Without horses.
But those speculations and complaints are already present. Without horses.
And about horses too.
We don’t see any horses because like the Mad King’s pony, they’re invisible! All Tyrian horses are invisible creatures.
except their skeletons which are visible under the necrid horsemen of GW1
well obviously, it’s only their skin that’s invisible, so when the skin rots, the visible skeleton appears.
LIEK, TOTALLY.

I like this theory
I like the idea of Anet adding roaming horse’s to the grassland area’s have them non tamable and possibly non kill-able, I have seen packs of other animals and flocks*? of Moa running around like this.
Well, we have no clue what lives in the large areas north of Kryta, it could be that horses live there. The other option is that horses, being only visible around nobility and/or Orrians, are native to another continent that we have not yet been to.
well its obvious that the charr ate them all and turned their hooves into glue, sold the glue to asuras so the asurans could do arts and crafts that could possible blow up countries…
This rise of the elder dragons coincides with the disappearance of horses.
Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Thank you for gathering all of this. It was a common belief that horses were extinct. However, with all these gathered facts, I like the ideas I’m seeing above:
Horses are extremely rare. Even if they were added in game, it would probably be a heard here or there. The fact that we’ve only really seen nobles talking about them likely means they’re VERY expensive – due to being hard to get.
This means (RPers) that it is very unlikely your character will have a horse (seeing by the sounds of it they’re only for the rich and extremely hard to find.)
Someone found out that killing a horse was worth 5xp. Now they’re extinct.
