It’s too early to give details, and there is a Living World forum thread mentioning the new Current Event, but if you go to the Caudecus Manor entrance in Beetletun there is a new poster to read that opens a trail of posters throughout Kryta.

The information in them could be pure propaganda, or another point of view on the lore of what happened in GW1 as well as what’s going on now.

Well its more like he put in some truth into the messages mixed with a lot of propaganda and lies.

Also there are quite a few interesting letters you can find on the Bandit Crates ( where the bosses are ) and these letters are then going to your inventory so you can read them no matter where you are. He also contradicts himself on the letters which I find quite nice.

Someone’s been drawing inspiration from real-world happenings. Still, did I spy a sneaky end to Evennia’s story in there?

Clearly, the sorty about Caudecus is not over and ArenaNet has not forgotten him. Who knows what will happen next anyway but yeah, it is some subjective vision about the truth that happened back in GW1.

Lies have a part of truth in it, that’s why people trust them

While it’s not a definitive confirmation, I’d say that from these propagandistic papers we finally found out what Lazarus’s “virtuous pursuits” are: standing to what Caudecus wrote, the reborn mursaat definitely intends to confront the remaining Elder Dragons.

My research has found a thread between magic and the mind. The two are linked.

I’ve transcribed all the posters and notes from this round. As I’m rather sleepy and not at all confident I can successfully spoiler-redact them in this forum (every time I try the full text is entirely visible), I won’t post them just yet. Possibly they are already on the wiki in a spoiler tag for all I know anyway But if you guys want them in this thread, I can try to edit them into the OP in the near future.

I noticed that apparent reference to Evennia, too, but how much trust can we place in anything Caudecus says, given his other distortions of the history we know? Look at the other jaw-dropping fabrications in the same letter. “Revisionist” is too mild a description.

All right, time to see if this spoiler tech works for me for once … here’s a transcription of the posters and notes. Posters first, due to length of post.

First the five signed posters, then the unsigned notes in the bandit champion supply crates (the game UI includes “the author of this note seems (emotion).”

1 – By CM – People of Kryta, it is I, your faithful servant, Lord Minister Caudecus Beetlestone. I know the queen has said terrible, nasty things about me, and I must assure you: I am here to return Kryta to its former glory! It is true, I am the supreme leader of the White Mantle. What is not true are the lies and slander the royal family and their lackeys have spread about our noble organization. I intend to set the records straight! – Lord Caudecus Beetlestone

2 – On bandit house near pumping station, Shaemoor – See how the Shining Blade hunts down all who question their false queen? See how they hold you with no trial, with no shred of justice? While I was legate minister, Kryta was a land of laws! It saddens me greatly to watch the tyranny of Queen Jenna from afar! It is clear I have no choice but to liberate Kryta from the royal bloodline who fails Kryta from one generation to the next! Fear not, Kryta, for your day of salvation is imminent! Blood will be shed, and for that, I weep. But we shall return Kryta to the honorable, just, and lawful rule of the White Mantle, with me as your supreme leader! Soon, your suffering will end, and together we will return Kryta, nay, all of Tyria to the glory days! – Lord Caudecus Beetlestone

3 – By Ascalon Settlement east gate – My brothers and sisters from Ascalon, you know my history. I fought with you against the charr! I bled with you, I wept with you as the once-great country was consumed by the ravenous beasts. And this is not the first time the White Mantle aided Ascalon in their fight with the charr. Generations ago, Zain the Merciful brought food and clothing for your countrymen. What did the Shining Blade send? Assassins, who your king had hanged from Ascalon City! Join me, and the White Mantle will reclaim your home from the charr, and we shall form a grand human empire the likes of which has never been seen before! – Lord Caudecus Beetlestone

4 – By the south gate of Seraph’s Landing (Harathi) – My fellow humans, do you remember the tales of the Titans? The false gods of the charr, who ravaged Tyria centuries ago? What the Shining Blade refused to tell you is that it was we, the White Mantle, who kept the beasts at bay, and it was agents of the Shining Blade who released them! The refugees from Ascalon, still weakened and tired from their trek across the Shiverpeaks but beginning to enjoy life under the wise and just leadership of the White Mantle, nearly burned due to the Shining Blade’s psychotic decision to open the Door of Komalie! The history you know is false! Join me, and I will protect you from all those who would harm you! – Lord Caudecus Beetleston

5 – By the Triskell Quay docks – Generations ago, it was the White Mantle who protected Kryta from the charr. Your queen wishes to sell you out to them! Is that the sort of leadership you want? Someone whose weak policies on the charr have opened our streets to their kind? Think of your families! Join me, join the White Mantle, and together we will close the borders to those beasts, and all other nonhumans! We will make Kryta strong; we will make humanity strong! We shall return to the glory days when man, not beast, not floppy-eared pseudointellectuals or plant beasts or brainless giants, ruled Tyria! – Lord Caudecus Beetlestone

It worked, hurrah! Here are the notes from the crates.

Bandit Crate 1 (angry) – Faithful members of the White Mantle, hear the words of your wise and true Confessor: This supposed god is false! He is not who he says he is! He is an imposter and has led you astray! For those who return to my graces, I will be merciful. For those who do not, my wrath will be unforgiving, and my pursuit unending.

Bandit Crate 2 (frustrated) – My brothers and sisters, ask yourself: Why would Lazarus forsake our countrymen? Why would he leave them to suffer under the tyranny of an incompetent queen, as weak and cowardly as her bloodline has proven to be for generations? I say again, he is false! There is no other explanation! Return to me, and together we will liberate Kryta, and usher in a new age of prosperity not seen since the days following Saul D’Alessio’s supreme sacrifice!

Bandit Crate 3 (determined) – It was a noble effort to bring the Unseen Ones back, as they aided our supreme hero Saul D’Alessio on the faithful (sic fateful?) day he sacrificed himself to save Kryta. But it was the White Mantle, not the Unseen Ones, who truly won that day! It was the White Mantle, not these “mursaat,” who ruled for the most prosperous time Kryta has ever seen! We must be the change we wish to see in Kryta! The Unseen Ones are gone; they have forsaken us as the old gods have forsaken the heretics. But fear not, for I will shoulder the burden of leadership!

Bandit Crate 4 (desperate) – More of our brothers and sisters have returned to our fold – disenfranchised with the supposed “noble pursuits” of this false god who calls himself Lazarus! He wished to use them as pawns against Dragons, have them throw their lives away while their families at home suffer at the hands of weak leadership. I promise you wealth, titles, and land for your service in returning the crown of Kryta to where it belongs – on the head of the Confessor of (the) White Mantle! So what will it be: Throw your life away at the feet of a dragon like the foolhardy Pact? Or return to my good graces, and be rewarded with wealth and power?

Bandit Crate 5 (vengeful) – Many of our brothers and sisters still follow the false Lazarus, willing to throw their lives away for his schemes. This saddens me! My offer of forgiveness can only extend for so long, as our day of reckoning is nearly upon us! Return to me, your one true leader, and you guarantee your family’s place at the table for the new ruling class of Kryta! Refuse, and they stand trial in your stead for your heresy. My patience has ended. Return now, or suffer the consequences!

Honestly, most of the things Caudecus distorts were pretty well documented at the time by contemporary historians (Durmand in particular). Many of those storys seem to have survived quite well and are widely known, based on conversations such as Marjory talking about pretending to be Chosen and putting on plays for her parents. What a barrel of road apples. Moral of the story: Don’t try making your own propaganda at home, kids! Hire an expert.

I think he’s banking on the fact that these are so well-known. What he says is, technically, correct, at least where the history is concerned. It just differs in interpretation and what they do and don’t leave out. It’s an effort to make people question whether the ‘official’ history is biased, or glossing over unsavory facts. He doesn’t need to win converts right now (at least not from the Krytan populace), just spread doubt.

Whether people will buy it depends on how much ground he’s lost. If there are still communities that think of him as ‘Caudecus the Wise’, the advocate of the common Krytan, or if there are more people like Riot Alice than we know of that are suspicious of the queen and the Shining Blade, he’s got a very good chance. If years of cloistering in the capital, and possibly months of the public linking him to bogeymen out of children’s stories, have been enough to discredit him, it’s probably too late.

While I find my plain-text version more readable when one merely wants to know what Caudecus wrote, the wonderful wiki folks have as usual come through with a breakdown of the text as it appears in game, along with dialogue options. (Probably even before I posted my transcription in this thread — I link this here for Lorist’s convenience).

I think so.

If not for Rurik, Zain would have been killed by the Royal Army.
