Disclaimer: this is just an idea but that wouldnt fit in the title so I said semi theory. It is not a theory because it is complete speculation and no points are proven!

So I am very interested in the Steam Creatures and I am sure I am not the only one. I was hoping for a long time that the Living Story would explain more about them. I also made that other post with the connect the dots thing that came out to be not true but the ley line thing was at least correct. The idea posted here will have kind of the same consequence story wise. While this isnt a complete nonsense idea I got what might be going on, it is a stretch. I just thought I should let you guys see it before I get my head into this too much as it has been bothering me and I want to know what you think.

Now we know Scarlets connection to the Steam Creatures isnt completely random and a coincidence since Vorpp mentiones something about the Steam Creatures and that all this going on is the first clue to their origins. We also dont know what the entity is that Scarlet is talking to and that is talking to Scarlet. Now the crazy idea: I think the entity might be the hyperintelligent Steam Mechabrain (pun intended) that controls all Steam creatures. If you have played Starcraft think of it like the Overmind was for the Zerg-race. This Mechabrain is talking to Scarlet and is planning to take over our Tyria. The biggest point against this is that it is said that Omadd’s device only opened Scarlet’s thought process thus the entity was in her mind all allong, just shielded off. So it must have some presence in The Dream. The Steam Mechbrain in The Dream wouldnt make sense right? Well I thought that too but I am still posting this here because we have way to less knowledge of the Dream to conclude this is false. I see it as some form of the Mists artificially generated in some way. I see the Steam Universe as some sort of Underworld like in Guild Wars 1. I can’t really bring it good to words. It seems to me that these two can be linked with eachother and therefore I think we should give this idea a chance so please post your thought. Be critic.

This leaves the question what the Probe in Lions Arch found. I think it found the ley line (duh) but with the help of the energy of the ley line she will make a ginat Steam Portal and Steam Creatures pour out of it and kill everything.

the only connection between scarlet and the steam creatures is that she tore one open and learned how to control it. which is probably the same thing the watchknights’ engineers did.

There’s another, more likely than OP, possibility. She’s said to have “left her mark” on various blueprints in the Rata Sum archives – never explained what that “mark” was but one of them may have been the Infinity Ball schematics. And through that, she got the steam creatures eventually.

A recent thought was the possibility that she was being influenced by the future version of the PC – if one were to twist the Grand High Sovereign’s mention of inventing the Steam creatures as “I manipulated others into making them for me, but I designed them” then it’d fit perfectly well. Would make for a more interesting story.

If we accepting the possible existence of one alternative timeline/reality then it is possible that infinite number of alternative timelines/realities also exist. One Grand High Sovereign was killed, but that doesn’t rule out another has become aware of our timeline/reality’s existence.

Nor would it prevent a younger or alternate Grand High Sovereign from the same possible future from being the culprit – before his death. And modified to be if any race rather than just asuran (as no matter what you’re some super special figure with a omg so whiney mentor from Destiny’s Edge).

I see the Dead End investigations as an attempt by the story writers to draw a line under the earlier story chapters. Everything Scarlet has been doing was explained away and if we don’t know something now then we probably never will. Under that assumption, we’ll probably not get any more information about the steam creatures beyond Scarlet’s excuse for controlling them. There’s so much information missing, such as who copied the steam mechanics to invent watchknights and what they’re doing now, that it seems unlikely to be at the center of anything new.

While I get your point, I cant help but point out that this entity tgat controlls Scarlet in some way wasnt tge center of attention either until 1 patch ago. Given this fact, Steam Creatures are a possibility to be at the center of everything.
