Steam creatures behind Fire&Ice?
Well there is an Asura personal story plotline that deals directly with them…
However spoilers on that aside, I find it unlikely simply due to where they are and where the events are taking place.
The steam creatures are largely an above ground menace, we haven’t had any dealings with them undeground as far as I’m aware. The problems we are seeing are hinted not only far north of Lornar’s Pass (the only in game area with Steam Creatures) which puts them at a long distance from where the events are taking place, but the threat appears to be coming from underground. As you yourself said, the steam vents are opening up from fissures in the ground and are releasing a great deal of heat.
The majority of the trouble, if I had to place a bet, seems to emminate from slightly north of Wayfarer’s Foothills and Diessa Plateau Waypoint. Both maps have a stream of refugee’s coming from there, meaning that the threat is existing a little further north than that effecting Norn and Charr a like. I think the biggest culprits right now will likely be Dredge or Destroyers until we get more info.
In one of the Asura storylines….
…..it is explained that the steam creatures come from an alternate dimension where you (the asura) is an evil overlord who invented them, or something along the lines of that.
I’m not sure if they’d be related to the events much because of that.
In the event where you fight them one of the npcs said they came from another realm which I guess would be another universe. One where a robot uprising took place mabey?

^It’s the universe where the Asura PC goes crazy and dominates Tyria with an army of steam creatures…
Could it be an uprising of volcanic activity (most likely activated by an elder dragon)? The steam vents are a logical result of that.
(However, I didn’t play the living story content (yet), so it might be misinterpretation).
The Knights Temple [TKT] — Aurora Glade
I think its an elder dragon ( Maybe the one who chased the asura above ground (if it wasnt yormag who did that tough not sure)). Because so far we have only seen two elder dragons and Arenanet spoke of many more. Aand this whole fire & ice event seems like its going to be quite a big deal. So yeah, why not reveal another Elder dragon now?
We’ve only SEEN one, but we know of 5, with a possible sixth…
Primordus drove the Asura above ground.
the asura where chased above ground by the minions of primordus. The main reason was that they where using primordus to power their gate network and so their central transfer chamber was on top of him. his champion took quick care off them then and forced them up.
unless they come with totally new entity’s I see two possible combinations to explain flame and ice.
1: jormag against the flame legion
2: jormag against primordus.
somehow I think the already weakend flamelegion doesnt stand a change against jormag, so I suspect and am hoping on a struggle for power between jormag and primordus. off course not between themself but between their minions.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Just a thought, but maybe it’s possible the steam creatures are behind Fire&Ice?
I found it very peculiar that there were vents of steam. It could have been the dredge, but I suspect Steam Creatures because there’s not much lore behind them.
Despite their name, the steam creatures have little to do with steam. They just have some exhaust.
Steam creatures are, effectively, mostly mechanical cyborgs (an NPC notes there is an organic center) that are sent from a possible future. Think Terminator 2. They appear too far to the southeast for them to be an issue underground in the north.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for Primordus and Jormag.
Imagine a three way fight between Us, Destroyers, and Icebrood.
After all, the dragons dont work together…right?
My original thoughts were that it is an alliance between the Charr enemy (Flame legion) and the Norn enemy (Sons of Svanir), mostly because one is flame and the other is frost.
Plus it happens in Charr/Norn lands.
But I dont think the steam rupturing from underground is likely to be caused by them, seems too technological for either.
Its the Dredge. At least for now.
The mountain with all the permanent vents in the Wayfarer Hills zone is the same mountain that is a huge drege hang-out on the Charr side of the zone boundry. All the refugees radiate out from that mass.
The dead merchant you find just down slope from the vents has blood running from his ears and burns.
Now, it’s possible the Dredge stired up a fresh surge of Destroyers accounting for the burns and the heat being vented, but the blood from ears is a pretty clear pointer to their sonic weaponry. They are definitely involved if not the overarching threat.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”
- Jareth, King of Goblins.
The blood running from the ears could just be caused by the concussive force of an explosion. However we know there are merchants (as in several) going missing in the area from a bodyguard in the tent next to the heart just south of the portal into Diessa.
Take heed, I haven’t taken leave of my senses…
…I suspect Titans.

Yeah, for this reason I think it would be almost impossible for the writers to come up with a reasonably coherent one-size-fits all plot for them.
My Asura Necromancer not only knows what the steam creatures are and where they came from, but she knows that (trying to avoid too much spoilage) they are inextricably linked to her own potential and her choices.
To my human Ranger, they’re just one more weird monster in a landscape of various weird monsters.
I don’t see how a story about them could possibly be tailored to fit both of those characters. If we learn more about the steam creatures, I would expect to see it in personal story rather than as a worldwide plotline.
Just throwing this out there: As part of helping the refugees I travelled along the path through Diessa Plateau, it was my first time playing in this area. Near the path, I thought I saw a single steam minotaur running around. As it was my first time here I didnt think much of it and figured they must be here as well as Lornars Pass. However, people in this thread and the GW2 wiki say they only appear in Lornars Pass.
Now I’m doubting what I saw, but I was so sure at the time that it was a steam minotaur.
I’m confused, are the refugees coming from North of current explorable areas? If so, I don’t see how the Steam creatures are up there unless other rifts exist. If anything, it sounds like double meanings to destroyers and icebrood.

Probably a player with a tonic.

So, if Anet is rolling out a chapter every month, and there are 4 chapters, the finale will be April… we can only hope that this is an epic setup for Corporal Bane to appear in GW2.
Except there’s no defined timeline, so your entire basis of ‘chapter per month’ is really just pulling numbers out of thin air to try and create a timeline where there is none.
Where was it said that there are 4 chapters?
We’ve only been told that Jan-March will be related to the Flame/Frost content

Look on the front page and click on the feb update. It says its a 4 part series.

“In Flame and Frost: The Gathering Storm, the second installment in this four-part series”
Says it pretty clear here that there will be 4 chapters
My bad, skimmed the post it seems
But, it still stands that unless they mention april, I think it’ll still end in March sometime

August: Release
September: <Saw a nameless large update, as well as the most smaller updates (both size and amount)>
October: Shadow of the Mad King
November: The Lost Shores
December: Wintersday
January: Frost and Flame: Prelude
February: Frost and Flame: The Gathering Shore
March: Frost and Flame: <insert part 3 title>
April: (Supposedly) Frost and Flame: <insert part 4 title>
September holding no content update is not surprising given how the game released late August. Anet would need time to observe the game when it handles millions of players, rather than hundreds of testers (possibly thousands, but I find that unlikely). And even then, they stilled had a large update that month. Currently, empirical evidence points to a large (content) update every month. This makes sense, as it’ll also contain non-emergency patches, bug fixes, and skill balancing. A monthly schedule overall makes the most sense, and seems to be Anet’s route.

Unlikely, if part 1 is Janruary, and part 2 is February.

Actually it looks like a weekly schedule, with a major update monthly.
Also some new NPC have appeared that give new hint on who or what is behind this all.

More likely, the dredge and flame legion of join forces, if you talk to some of the refugee npcs in the town, they say it been the work of those two.
the norn also stated that the dredge had used fire, which they never did before.
