If you listen to the Sylvari NPC’s just northeast of the Hamlet of Annwen Waypoint. There are 2 Annwen Citizens talking. The male says the below phrases. Kind of eerie. What do you think?

“Do you get a weird vibe around the other races?”

“I don’t know, when I go near the Haven I start craving meat.”

This is an isolated case, so it’s unlikely to be a case of all sylvari. It’s most likely that the sylvari is smelling cooking and that’s making it hungry.

Being sylvari, their way of phrasing and the reason for their feelings are still fairly new so poorly explained and said, left for many misinterpretations – this is not the only such line.

It’s either that, or some of them actually want to eat the other “meatier” races (Norns… beware around Sylvari). I mean, humans eat vegetables right? >_<

I would just take that to mean that sylvari normally have a vegetarian diet at home, which makes sense given their plant-based “technology” which makes it easy to produce fruit and vegetables. When they visit other races territory they’re exposed to alien cuisine – I know more than one vegetarian in real life who admits to being tempted by the smell of bacon.

I wonder how a sylvari would react to visiting the charr Meatoberfest?

There is a sylvari discussion in the Grove about a fantastic rabbit stew one of them cooked. They certainly enjoy meat even at home.

Yeah, there’s a part in one of the novels – Caithe in Edge of Destiny? – where a sylvari is eating moa. Meat eating seems fairly normal among sylvari.

My hypothesis would be that the particular NPC the OP mentions gets a sort of flashback of the Dream around that Haven, some scrap of memory associating the Lionguard/foreigners and eating meat. Something about that place might spark a half-buried Dream memory from another sylvari’s life. That’s just a guess, though!

Sylvari lack roots despite being plantlike, so everything that a normal plant would get from the soil, they’d need to get from eating (similar to carnivorous plants augmenting the poor soil they normally live in by eating insects and other animals).

They do photosynthesise, but not enough to fulfill their energy requirements as a mobile life form – they need to eat to sustain their lifestyle. Mind you, it is possible that a sylvari could survive in hibernation for very long periods if they lie somewhere with good sunlight, until they begin to suffer from mineral deprivation.

Though there’s also a scene in Edge of Destiny where Caithe eats food.

There’s an actual conversation that my charr had with a sylvari. The sylvari mentioned eating something and my charr said something to the extent of, “I always figured the sylvari at whatever other crops ate.” She then went on to say that she knew enough to know being called a crop was a derogatory term, and also that she would never eat manure, unless it was made just right. Then my charr said, “I’m just going to pretend you were joking about that last part.”

Thanks Konig, I had a 50/50 chance there and somehow knew I’d get the wrong sylvari. I just couldn’t remember the broader context >.<

Sylvari also have strong empathy compared to the other races. They can’t read minds or pinpoint emotions, but they’re able to pick up on “vibes” fairly easily.
