of course it ends on an empty void. the maps in the game aren’t physically next to each other like you see on the map. they are isolated files, and you get transported from one into the other through the portals.
You don’t have to explain the technical side to me darling, haha. But I know people were hoping that perhaps something special would be behind the blockade. Alas, it is just an empty path ending in a void… for now.

Well I’m in the same boat as most here, I really want Tengu to be playable I’m holding both a Tengu name and holding back on the decision as to if its Thief or Guardian, when they are eventually released even if its a long time away.
Im not gonna lie I really don’t want them to do Gangnam style though XD it would damage the race for me, they are too indifferent from the comedy nature of it to have it IMO and to me the dance wouldn’t be right. Naturally its a matter of opinion but I know others would put me off with the nature of the dance anyway :P
If anything when it comes to playable Tengu, Anet has the awkward decision of deciding where in the timeline they fit in when we create one. Are we a Tengu observer or spy that’s sent to see how the other races fair against Zaitan in order to help our nation decide to join them or does our story begin after his fall?
Better yet do we have ourselves in a situation where we the Tengu are forced to accept help from the other races due to the destroyers. To me the books just too open to speculate. For all we know when the Tengu finally open the gates it could simply be to reveal a plan to use one Elder Dragon as a tool ie to take out another ED or for some greater purpose to the Tengu.
Do the Tengu operate in the background for the tale of the first Dragon’s fall for example? We know Tengu are about outside the dominion even if its in small numbers. Its nice to wonder if we decide when our story starts simply during character creation. I end up with more questions than anything when I think about the Tengu!
Gah I want to play a Tengu so badly! Birds are cool, Samurai are cool, and Samurai Birds are super cool! However, I want 2 things if Tengu becomes playable: Don’t make them re-skinned Charr, give them custom animations pleeassse. AND don’t give them the Gangnam Style dance, give them the Monk dance form GW1.
If the Tengu do end up as a race id like to see the rit class come back with them as with them being from cantha they should be able to still use it. And it would be interesting to see what they would do with rit’s to balance them out for GW2, as for people who played GW1 will possibly agree they was over powered.
It could actually make for one of the more compelling conflicts. Imagine a fight where the other side wasn’t outright evil, but just violently disagreed with yours. The Tengu decide to join with the other great races, to help them against the dragons. One of the houses goes rogue and refuses. This leads to dissent, and inevitably in a bushido-driven culture, to duels and bloodshed. This spirals out of control, and both sides find themselves grimly determined to fight the other, even where they would rather not, because their honor demands that they not back down from the insults of the opposing side.
Four houses does push somewhat into the idea of one of the houses going rogue in some fashion – if choice of house is a personal story defining choice (rather than simply one that influences some NPC reactions and appearances, like choice of cycle as a sylvari) than unless they break the normal pattern we can probably expect to see one of the houses being unplayable (and, by extension, unfriendly).
Unwillingness to let go of old hatreds seems something that’s been done before, though – in the form of the Renegades and Separatists. I’d rather it be in the form of a house that’s dishonoured itself in the eyes of another, such as through being involved in organised crime or through getting caught engaging itself in political advancement through assassination (similar to the Scorpion Clan in Legend of the Five Rings).

Well, there were 4 clans of Tengu in the beginning right? I’m thinking the Angchu, Sensali, Caromi, and Quetzal. Well, I think we can rightly assume that these 4 clans became the 4 winds. So I get the feeling that whatever wind the Sensali are will be reflected as the rogue faction for them. The reason I believe this is the fact that the Sensali not only felt betrayed by the humans during the Tengu Accords, but they felt betrayed by their fellow Tengu, the Angchu.
I was wondering OP, where did you find that picture of the Tengu wearing the baggy pants?

You mean this one? http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/4225/tengu2f.jpg I found it in the GW2 Guru forums, it’s part of a video but I cannot find it. http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/30857-video-showing-the-tengu-in-gw2/
they need to show us what female tengu look like soon

Probably duller-colored Tengu given how birds are

There was the Avicara in the Shiverpeaks as well, and some of the things that GW2 Tengu have said imply that the tengu were more widespread than we saw in GW1. It’s possible that it’ll turn out that the houses refer to which direction they come from – for instance, Angchu and Sensali might be combined into South, Caromi in North, Quetzal in West, and Avicara in East, along with other clans we don’t currently know.
Certainly, though, I expect the Caromi will turn out to be (in) one of the good factions, since they’re the ones we seem to interact with most in GW2. Unless the reason we interact with them most is that they’re the ones enforcing the isolation.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.

Well the Caromi enforcing the isolation may not be a sign that they are evil, only that they, perhaps, are following their orders like good soldiers (blood legion).

Well, what if the tengu tribes are no longer the same as we knew? Unified into just “the tengu”? That’s an interesting thought.
Well I think there is a lot of truth to that statement, but they have segregated themselves somewhat. We know it to be true that they have 4 class distinctions, the four winds. What this means for them we do not know. It could be similar to the human class distinctions having to do with wealth and power, but it could also be class distinction based on where they came from. Sadly we as a group will not know until they become released.
I’m curious maybe they will do like what they did with male and female charr… where the female are a bit more domesticated looking and the males more wild and beastly looking.

The females are more domesticated looking? Really, cause the only difference I see is a vaguely lower amount of bulk and the fluffier tail.
I did say above, if they stand by things then they’ll probably have male tengu be more strikingly colored but the females duller and less vibrant.

Well by more domesticated looking i meant less bestially and more cat like… most of the female charr faces are similar to domestic cats…. aren’t female tengu also suppose to be taller and bigger. maybe female tengu will have more of a song bird look while males are more birds of prey looking.

interesting but we have to remember this a fantasy game so they might go with a more obvious difference in the face as well as feathers… also remember that concept art of tengus one was like a peafowl tengu I wan i want i want
I think the difference will definitely be more than just color. I only say this because player characters will be able to make their tengu whatever coloring they want.
I’m actually kind of disappointed in the GW2 Tengu design. I really liked them better when their eyes face forwards and they stood up right. However, we’ve only seen the same Tengu skin re-skinned for all the NPCs. I’m hoping that we get an option to make them stand straight again and I hope we get an Owl face option so the eyes can face forwards.
unlike the charr they do look like they are in a permanent attack mode

Even better if, like the Scorpion Clan, they’re not entirely black-hat. Makes for much more interesting villains.

Really, REALLY want them as a playable race.
Especially if they /dance Gangnam style.

This is what the making of GW2 book says about the subject:
I imagine that, like most birds, male Tengu will be slightly larger than females. They will have a larger plumage and more colourful feathers than females, but otherwise both genders conform to the same general build.
Just as the risen are attached to Zaithan and the icebrood are tied to Jormag, the destroyers seem to be tied to Primordus. This could mean….
Dominion of Wind = Tengu starting zone
Destroyers + Primordus = content expansion
Ring of Fire islands = level 80 content zones attached to Primordus
Here’s a thought: maybe the player faction would be the rogue faction of the Tengu. Thus the player has to convince the Tengu to seek help against the destroyers rather then staying locked inside their city, while the four houses are too scared or honor bound to admit that they’re in over their heads.
It would certainly help the Tengu story feel more unique if your character starts out as the outcast instead of being a part of the main faction.
idk i was thinking the rouge tengu faction would be a group of tengu who don’t believe they should be even talking to outsiders let alone letting them in their cities…

According to the Factions Manuscripts: “Females are generally larger than the males of their species, though their plumage is plainer, even drab.”
@Narcemus: Something like that was actually what I considered more likely. The Caromi at the DoW’s borders don’t seem to be particularly hostile, just doing their job. Thus, while it’s possible they’re just putting on a nice face for the rest of teh world while zealously keeping all other tengu on the inside, I think it’s more likely that the Caromi are included among the ‘good’ tengu.

Oooh, didn’t know that. Even better then! That would make female Tengu unique among playable races for having females that are bigger than the males. I love variety.

What a buzzkill. I really hope they consider these birds for a future expansion, hopefully the “Return to Cantha” expansion. It’s a shame they built them up with Winds of Change only to abandon them in GW2.

doubtful they would included in the cantha expansion seeing as they are already in tyria… but hopefully the add them soon

I agree, the chances of them being released with Cantha are low. The best chance we have for them being playable is when we focus on Primordus.
i wonder what bio questions will work for them
Probably which tengu heritage they come from (Caromi, Avicara, Quetzal, Angchu or Sensali, which determine their starting headgear), which Wind order they follow (North, South, East, West), and a personal issue for the character (which will determine their level 1 – 20 personal quests).
i like that they have already considered making diffrent bird variaties in the potential playable versions.
From playing Guild Wars 1, not really a qualification but oh well, I’m surprised that the Tengu have just so little of Tyria, which to me suggests that perhaps there’s an asura gate that leads to Cantha. Now according to lore, all or most races were expelled but Cantha is very mountainous (especially in the southern region, where a DLC mission takes place). It is very interesting to see the involvement of the Tengu and also the Kodan…two rces I hope become playable.. I’m just a fan of beast races and by saying that I’m stating I have a charr.
Main: Endeavorr
It’s a shame they built them up with Winds of Change only to abandon them in GW2.
WoC would have been chronologically after the GW2 races were set, but there still is Factions in general. The whole thing reads a lot more like a “not now” than a “never”, especially considering the questions it would raise – why is the Dominion of Winds shut off in the first place – why is it that large, even – if there are no big plans for it?
Stormbluff Isle ( http://www.stormbluffisle.com )
maybe when the path is clear to cantha we will find out the empire is currupt and praising the DSD or something.
Another thing
I remember a quote of a charr saying to another that there are charr cubs starving in Cantha. Strange, never knew charr were in Cantha. May have happened in the 100 years after gw1 that we actually still had contact. Maybe the other races that did go to cantha are slaves for the Human master race empire and we have to get the tengus help because there are still tengu there being enslaved aswell.
Just some ideas I thought of. Prob sound crazy :P
Maguuma Server
I’m pretty sure the quote about the charr talking about cubs starving in Cantha is part of the whole “Children starving in India” quote things. I doubt it has any hold on the game when it comes to lore.
Just popping in to say there is a Tengu taking part in the Wintersday snowball fights. That makes me so happy.

I squealed with glee when I saw that and took multiple pictures of it, speaking of which, I should update the gallery.

Tengu: Face me!
Me: Okay!

I would like to have an Tengu ^^
Like most people here i would like to see Tengu playable. As for where they would start and where they show up in campaign for the dragon(s), depending on if/when they are released, they could do what was done in GW1, where if you did a mission in the story line that took place before your character’s arrival then it would give you a message telling you that, or they could be happening at the same time. The other thing that could be done is just cut them out from all events story wise, and all story mode dungeon runs would give you the “this takes place before your characters arrival” message. As for where they would be the could have there starting area in an expansion, like Shing Jea island and they work out some story line for Tengu coming back to Cantha. If A-net is doing it’s research into how other MMOs solve problems like this then they can find away to fit Tengu on Tyria or in other continents.
They could always do what blizzard did with Death Knights and make it a Time Laps starting area.
Two more pictures added to the album!
