The Insect/Arachnid gods Theory
Karl Marx: “Go away! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!”
First problem – you’re going off things that were in the GW1.dat and were never actually mentioned in game thus we can’t treat them as canon.
Second problem – Guild Wars 2 is a separate game to Guild Wars 1 and there have been changes made to the lore, or at least ‘revelations’ on how things that were previously thought fact were wrong.
Third problem – You’re dealing with things found inside the Realm of Torment, which is of course separate to Tyria itself. There are most likely tons of things that exist within realms within the mist that will never have any bearing whatsoever on the GW universe or lore. The Realm of Torment was initially Abaddons prison before his influence spread through it – so yeah maybe once there were spider gods that ruled the Realm of Torment – but I’m not really sure what relevance they would hold over GW2?
1) Yes they were in the dat but they were actually landmarks ingame as well, if I remember correctly the spiders heart landmarked pulsed or glowed red in an area when you got near to it. so it could still have some effect on GW2.
2) Yes that is a possibility
3) “The Realm of Torment was initially Abaddons prison before his influence spread through it”, but it seems that this statement “It has become a place where individuals of twisted evil or corruption are banished to spend eternity in torment” seems to say otherwise, I believe they are both from the Nightfall manuscript, but I’m unsure. The thing that I was supposing I guess would be if the dragons in GW2 are a force that lies dormant until they awaken and feed off of magic in the physical world of Tyria, what if something similar was needed in a way to regulate magic in the mists, and what if these Insect/Arachnid creatures are the being that consume magic in the mists (I know its a gigantic leap).
Karl Marx: “Go away! Last words are for fools who haven’t said enough!”
The area believed to be the Spider’s Heart was just a spot of brighter land and was blue, not red. The red spot looked more like a mouth of sorts and was the entryway into the Gate of Secrets atop the upsidedown spider like plateau which was believed to be Arachnia Plateau.
The Realm of Torment was originally Abaddon’s realm – like the Underworld was Dhuum’s then Grenth’s. It became Abaddon’s prison and afterwards, presumably, became Kormir’s realm.
As to the supposed Arachnia and the “gods of insectoid beings” being akin to the Elder Dragons in function – there’s no reason to believe such. Elder Dragons and gods are vastly different things, as “god” in definition of the GWverse in terms of the known physical gods hold indestructible magic – whether this is true for any god outside the Six Gods is unknown, but then again it is unknown if there even are gods outside of the Six Gods. Besides this, Arachnia and these other gods of insectoid beings are said to be long-dead, their corpses being within the Realm of Torment.
Besides, the Mists does not seem to hold magic. Or rather, it may but the Mists themselves are just protomatter and holds chunks of reality made from said protomatter; magic would be made from said protomatter too. There would be no need to regulate magic because it would be constantly made and, since magic is not infinite, used. Unlike on Tyria where we have no knowledge of it being renewable or being used fast enough.
Perhaps the underuse of magic in the Mists is what causes those chunks of reality to form, thus a regulation of magic would in fact make the Mists less of what they are. But it is pure theorycrafting and you might as well say that Balthazar was wearing a tutu while he decapitated his father – you have equal chances of being right in either case.
As to Fyonna – I see no relation, honestly. And I don’t think she simply transformed into a spider. I think the point was that a spider ate her or burst forth from within her (as it is said she stored her spider “babies” within her body). Sadly I never got a fight with her which wasn’t “pull her into the tunnel and stack on her!” so I could never see animations for it well.
To Fyonna trying to “wake” deities – again, I’d point to the fact that everything about these gods of insectoid beings is that they are dead. Not sleeping like the Elder Dragons nor imprisoned like Abaddon, but dead. And that pretty much says “no” to your theory like a giant brick wall.
And that’s even asuming Arachnia and the insectoid beings’ gods (nothing really says the gods are insectoid themselves, btw – or that the spider goddess Arachnia and the gods of insectoid beings are related) are canon.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
@ Konig
Fyonna simply transforms into the spider, and can switch back to her normal form again, and then again to spider form. So she’s probably just using transformation magic to attain such form at will.
Well, I think seeing some big kitten Spider God or such would be approved by players imo, with good mechanics, for some better fight.
But honestly, we’re at the point when any true content with actual new stuff would be welcomed by players…

I’m glad I see this thread, I once saw the topic and recently I found myself wondering about the gods. Since I barely played gw1, I never experienced this up close.
Even though there isn’t a large chance these deities will come to life again, I’d love to see anet going back to this, even it was only a little hint that got us back on the edge of our chairs. An abandoned altar in the crystal desert or a small mention in the durmand priory… I’d be as exited to see this as to see what’s inside the wizards tower.
Btw: when I was reading the original post, I thought of: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Risen_Spider_Lord
But yeah, Konig has you by the balls again, like he does with everything on this forum

Wuh? Buh? Er… Sorry, but my boat does not float that way.
