The Profession problem
I’m actually not generally in favour of new professions, but in order to act as Dervish’s Advocate:
+: We know that existing professions, particularly the guardian, have influence from Elona (SoS and a post-announcement interview, now lost to the internet). Plus, the (re)appearance of the Dervish could come with the opening up of Elona.
+: The only thing that really ties dervishes to the human gods are the avatars, and that could simply be explained as the dervishes happening to be the first to discover what was actually a human racial ability. Apart from the avatars, there’s nothing to say that other races can’t learn to use the same style of magic except for a few skills being named after deities (and such naming does not necessarily mean that the power behind those skills comes from the god in question).
+: Flails were raised as a dervish weapon in ArenaNet’s brainstorming. Other settings have associated curved swords such as scimitars with dervishes. Really, any weapon that can be used in a spinning fashion would probably work. For ranged… dervishes are a magical profession, so sceptre, focus, staff.
+: Necromancers, just as an obvious start – and you only need two.
+: This has been explained in interview. Basically, to give a martial arts analogy – all of the teachers were either in Elona or were caught in Lion’s Arch when it flooded. Those that were left were competent fighters, but didn’t have the full breadth of the traditions required to maintain them into future generations, so the style got absorbed into other professions instead (I’m looking at you, Whirling Wrath).
+: Since they got taught how to do it.
+: Because, because, because.
As a general observation: Arenanet did try to cover every playstyle (at least that fits into their greater idea of the game) on release, albeit not necessarily exactly the same aesthetic. The more I think about it, though, the more I think they’ve failed – they’ve covered the Paragon style fairly well, but there’s not really anything in GW2 that matches the ramping synergy-building of the ritualist or the enchant-strip mechanic of the dervish. There are things that have the same general idea, but they’re just not the same.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
