The most mysterious drawing in Scarlet's Lair
I thought it were connections between her thumpers at first… The red thorn vine is her symbol/signature. Perhaps her endgame will have something to do with growing a red thorn vine all across Tyria.
Mere speculation ofcourse.
Can anyone super-impose this on the map of Tyria from her lair? We might see some connection to the probes.
kitten . When I saw this I thought we’d be talking about this picture.
yeah, it’s rather odd. it looks like it should mean something, but i have no idea what. i can’t seem to make it look like anything distinguishable, the only thing i can think of is that it’s a drawing of the briar she saw. it’s similar to the briar she drew on that palm tree pale tree on another sketch.
On a serious note, I really don’t think it means anything. Everything in that hideyhole that us players weren’t supposed to recognize were just sheets with scribbles. A few of those scribbles got graffitied over, like this one. I don’t think they’ll go anywhere with it.

I did this but there was nothing to be seen so I didnt even save it.
It might be nothing but Ill still keep looking out for it.

… What if Scarlet plans to take over Tyria with an army of rocketpowerd Dolyaks?! Gasp
I think these are the paths of the leylines in Tyria (although likely not drawn to scale).
The ‘X’ on the left has me thinking about the Thaumanova reactor being at the intersection of leylines. In the past, I’ve described ‘otherworldly’ events as being indicators of potential leyline activity. The idea is that leylines prime the area with magic; then when portal magic is used in those locations, we get a full breach into an alternate reality (underworld, steam, etc). So then these portals (and other similar events) should give us a sense of the leylines.
To that end, I’ve been recording the locations of steam creatures during Scarlet’s invasions. Their locations are not random (i.e. when they appear, it’s always in the same spots). They are also likely not meaningless, since ALL of their locations in Lornar’s Pass immediately surround the area of their ‘core’ portal.
First, I want to be clear — I am not connecting the steam creatures to Scarlet’s plan or anything like that. The steam creatures are simply an event that marks the breaching of our reality’s fabric. The steam creatures could have been an underworld portal, or something similar. These events are incidental to the invasions.
When I saw this diagram in Scarlet’s lair, I immediately thought of these steam creature locations, so I roughly reconstructed it to see if it could account for these breaches in reality (attached). Of course, I took some liberties in the scaling of the lines, since I really don’t expect her diagrams to be the appropriate scale.
This diagram (in the way that reconstructed it) accounts for essentially all of the steam locations, except for a couple.
What drew me to this picture is that it’s all over her hideout. It’s probably the most repeated picture in there; she’s got a copy at almost every workstation. Clearly it’s important enough to her that she wanted it on hand at all times. Yet it’s devoid of any legend or markings.
Looking at it again the lines appear to have arrows on them? They seem to run in certain directions. Are these the leylines perhaps?
i really wish people would stop saying “leylines” every time something happens. it’s like nothing can be done without people assuming it’s tied to leylines. we don’t even know if it’s like a physical thing like a riverbed. and of course the X will intersect thaumanova if you make it so it intersects at thaumanova. what’s to say that the X isn’t actually a bit further down, or you got it upside down?

First of all — the leylines are a HUGE part of the lore of Tyria, and are likely going to be the focus of a most of our future content releases, given their relationship to dragons.
we don’t even know if it’s like a physical thing like a riverbed.
I didn’t say anything like this, so…? We do know that their network is formed by channels; whether that takes on a physical form is not important here.
and of course the X will intersect thaumanova if you make it so it intersects at thaumanova. what’s to say that the X isn’t actually a bit further down, or you got it upside down?
Yes, of course the X on that diagram could mean anything if we don’t assume anything about the diagram. I’m saying that IF this diagram represents the leylines, then the X HAS to be the thaumanova reactor. This diagram is posted all over Scarlet’s lair and they’re all in this orientation.
the only thing i can think of is that it’s a drawing of the briar she saw. it’s similar to the briar she drew on that palm tree pale tree on another sketch.
Okay, lets get this out of the way.

the only reason the leylines got brought up in the first place was because we voted for the thaumanova reactor fractal. if we had gotten the fall of abaddon instead, i don’t think we’d have ever found out that scarlet was researching that kind of stuff (or rather, it wouldn’t even be canon). so i disagree with the notion that it’s very likely to be a major focus of future story releases.
regarding the physical thing, it’s not directed at you, it’s directed at the people that think that the drill is going to be used to dig for leylines, or that the thumpers are looking for leylines, and that her objective is to open a hole in it so the dragon can suck on it like a bottle.
overall, it just annoys me that every single theory is based on something we heard on fractured, a release that could’ve given us no insight into scarlet at all if not for luck of the draw. it’s also kind of annoying that nothing can’t happen without people finding lines to overlay the tyrian map, or overlaying anything with the tyrian map for that matter. feels like some people are jumping the gun a bit.
the only thing i can think of is that it’s a drawing of the briar she saw. it’s similar to the briar she drew on that palm tree pale tree on another sketch.

well i don’t know about that. the nightmare tower didn’t look very palm tree-ish to me. i could see that as a valid thing, but we have very solid lore backing that says she’s obsessed with the briar that attacked the pale tree. the briar did attack the pale tree too, there’s no question about it:
“It was then Ceara saw the thorn vine. It emerged from the roots at the base of the tree and began to climb, wrapping itself around the trunk and scoring the bark with its dusty red barbs. Green-black ichor oozed from these wounds, and the great tree shuddered.
Then Ceara was the vine, squeezing the great tree’s trunk like a desperate lover. The tree struggled against her: she was meant to be part of it, to participate in its grand purpose. Instead, she was no more than an irritant, a provocation."
in the context of the story, the great tree being referred to is the pale tree, no question about it. and while a palm tree might look like an odd choice to represent the pale tree, it’s an even worse choice to represent an oversized stalk with no leaves.
i really wish people would stop saying “leylines” every time something happens. it’s like nothing can be done without people assuming it’s tied to leylines.

I’m sorry to break it for you, Bruno, but thanks to the amazing writing talent, ley lines will be trending now for years to come.

ok, i’ll admit, i laughed :P
I agree with Bruno, we’ve had like a few small mentions of leylines in game with no necessary indication that they are immeditately important, and while they might be it’s not something that is going to be solved by throwing the word leylines at every single new thing introduced into the game OR by stating outright that they are going to be the most important part of the lore for a long time….. Because there is nothing to indicate that there is truth to that statement (and nothing to indicate there is no truth to it).
well i don’t know about that. the nightmare tower didn’t look very palm tree-ish to me.
Look at the picture. It does look like the drawing. It looks a lot more like it than the Pale Tree does.

It’s reasonable to assume that Scarlet has been drawing her dreams, I agree. However, the resemblance between the drawing and the Tower of Nightmares is also uncanny. Could it be that Scarlet was trying to recreate something from her dreams? And BTW, the Tower of Nightmares did have leaves. You can see them clearly in the picture.

i don’t know, if anything putting the pale tree next to the drawing makes me spot far more similarities between the two than the drawing and the tower. the thick, large, expansive leaves and the really large base with a thin top are more akin to the tree than the tower.
the tower was a tool she used for… something. by the time we took it down she said she already had what she built it for, so i don’t think she was trying to recreate anything as much as developing an enviroment for something she needed. the spikes and planks are just because of the two groups involved in building it.
To the original OP. In the lair is a rather crude drawing of a tree surrounded by red vines – this is obviously the Pale Tree being choked by the red thorned vines she saw in her vision. This equally crude drawing is more frantic, and you can see black behind some of the red – much like the tree in the other one.
I think the picture talked about in the OP is just a more “crazy-fied” version of the tree-strangled-by-a-vine drawing. A show of Scarlet’s madness progression.
Alternatively, the black seems to “dangle” from the thorns – like hanging people. Perhaps it’s a hint to the image she saw when the being trying to enter her mind showed her images of “death, destruction, and destiny”. People hanging from the thorns (“branches”) of the red vine – which she views to be herself (hence why she took the name Scarlet Briar). All of Tyria will hang by her “thorns” – that could have been the message, hence how it can be about both death and destiny.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

Hi guys,
One of the posters stated that there are two dragons painted in Scarlet’s lair. Can we confirm this? If so can someone provide screenshots? Thanks heaps
Yeah that was kind of confusing, I see only one. Where is the other?

i think he was either thinking of a post where someone shopped the picture to make the dragon white (and thus easier to spot), or they’re assuming this black and white drawing is a dragon.
2 dragons, exact same image re-splattered
2 dragons, exact same image re-splattered
that doesn’t look like 2 dragons to me. and IIRC, the person that claimed 2 dragons said “a red one and a white one”.
well it’s the exact same image re-posted on the cave wall
if it’s not a dragon then neither is the enormous one over the monitor
i didn’t draw it
still one continuous body to me, even if that’s another dragon head (i’d have to get in game to see it properly, and i’m not about to do that this late at night).
the only thing i can think of is that it’s a drawing of the briar she saw. it’s similar to the briar she drew on that palm tree pale tree on another sketch.

Personally, I see that image from her lair (the “palm tree”) as being upside down. It’s actually the drill digging into and cracking the ground it is digging into by channeling the “weapon” energy in a spiral (drill) fashion into it.

You know to me the dragon painting looks like a skelleton of a dragon.
Has it already been established/theorized that red thorn vine = Scarlet Briar, and she is trying to recreate the epiphany she had?

i think it’s estabilished in lore that she changed her name to reflect the thing she saw.
