Q:
The nature of magic and bloodstones
A:
First thing to note is that a lot of the History of Tyria document from Prophecies has been retconned in one way or another. Most importantly: the gods did not create magic.
- The theory is that the Maguuma Bloodstone was Preservation, though it’s never proven, in large due to the Maguuma’s water’s healing properties. But based on S3, the crazed-ness is due to the immense amount of magic, rather than the type. Though it could go either way.
- The ley lines are from magic seeped out of the Elder Dragons and the Bloodstones – they were not perfect containers, per the journals.
- The Bloodstone’s magic has largely been reduced in terms of their restrictions, due to the magic released by the Elder Dragons. So the schools don’t fit much anymore, except as the immediate magic, maybe?
- The theory is that Preservation = Monk/Paragon, thus Guardian; Aggression=Necromancer; Denial=Mesmer/Assassin, thus Thief; Destruction=Elementalist (possibly Dervish). Only the Elementalist’s tie to school of magic was confirmed.
- Yes, there are problems… whole storyline of the game. As for how they can consume magic… Lazarus used some fancy ritual, the dragons naturally eat magic. Gods’ involvement is irrelevant there in that part.
- Since the professions no longer derive solely from bloodstones, and removing a profession (if theory is right, guardian) would be a tough move to do and probably would annoy too many players, I doubt we’d see a change of things mechanically.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
Thank you for your answer.
It’s clearer to me now.
There’s also that theory that’s been floating around that various changes in magic and the Maguuma region (Preservation losing powerful healing and resurrection; expanded healing for other professions; drying out of parts of the Maguuma) could have been the result of previous tampering with the bloodstone, possibly under Lazarus’ direction. If that’s the case, it’s possible that guardians were already disconnected from the bloodstone by the present.
It will be interesting to see if anything happens with the water in Auric Basin as a result. HoT seemed to be implying that was actually related to the druids, not necessarily to the bloodstone, so it’s possible that it will just continue on as it has been. Due to the ‘freezing’ of maps, it’s unlikely that we’ll see a change in the open world, but it might be commented on or come up in future instances.
It’s also worth noting that the Exalted mention that they use preservation magic (the context being that the preservation magic they use is anathema to Mordrem, I think, but don’t quote me on that), so they may be affected by the Bloodstone’s destruction. Alternatively, they could simply be talking about the magic the Forgotten used to prevent dragon corruption.
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.
