I’m curious if there is anything offical, because during/around the battle updates (escape and battle combined when I say that) I heard something like “50k population of LA before the attack, 15k people escaped.” But I don’t recall a source.

Ingame recently I saw the end of the lionguard patrol dialogues, which had the Asura mention “We lost hundreds… maybe thousands!” when confronting a Sylvari.

So it made me think about that… is the numbers she mentioned talking about purely lionguard causalities, or overall population?

Not sure if we have any reliable stats but we can estimate (with the help of google).

Given that Tyria is for the most part in a dark-age/renaissance level of technology (charr seem to be around industrial revolution and asura are kinda hard to put into any known reference) the population can’t be that large.
The estimated world population in and around 1300s was about 450 million, given that the dragons have directly or indirectly cut of a lot of world travel there’s not a lot of migration going on, so Tyria is only a part of the greater world and Lion’s Arch is only a city in Tyria.

I guess we can use Europe as an analogue, so around 1300s Europe was around 70 mil. Paris in the middle ages was the largest city in Europe (actually the world so maybe not a good analogue) with a populations of about 250,000 – 300,000. Ok so Paris was the biggest city so lets look at a couple of other around the same time, in fact there’s a nice list here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_urban_community_sizes .
So from that it wasn’t uncommon for large cities during a roughly equivalent technological period to have populations around 100,000 or less. And remember none of those cities had literally dragons in far off lands reducing their population through a number of calamities and corrupted armies.

Now without having any accurate indications about the size of LA or the economic landscape (it seems most citizens are traders or working to enable trade, so a smaller population does seem likely because how many people do you really need to load and unload ships or sell stuff) its hard to say.

So maybe 50K isn’t an unreasonable figure for the entire population (unless someone else has a official number). Highly doubt LA required hundreds or thousands of lionguard to maintain security, so then most likely she’s referring to entire population lost.

I assumed 50k included day to day travelers (merchants, adventerers, people using the city to reach another by gate), and 15k was total escaped civilian and lionguard.

I’ve heard the lionguard tasked to retake the traders forum numbered between 20+ to 100+, and most of them died in the battle.

There was never any statistic on population ever really given. Only population statistic we have is “Nightmare Courtiers make up about 15% of all sylvari from the Pale Tree”.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.
