What professions make sense for sylvari? Can they be necromancers, elementalists, guardians, etc.

I’m sort of new to guild wars lore, ive played guild wars 1 but never got too far, i sort of understood the lore but never got it all. I’m having a hard time understanding how the sylvari can get away with being half the professions they are. For a people that are 25 years old max how have they discovered the complexities of the elements or discovered the art of necromancy and used it with such skill. what race/profession combinations actually make sense for a sylvari? Convince me :P

I think they all make sense.
Remember the sylvari start learning before they’re ‘born’, they emerge into the world effectively as adults, not just physically but mentally. I don’t think we’re told how long each one spends in the Dream (or physically growing) but when they emerge they’re supposed to have all the skills they need to start their life, including at least the basics of the professions.
Originally they would have had to learn it from the other races, but as I understand it even the Firstborn came into the world with a rudimentary knowledge of most things having picked it up from the Pale Tree.
Also there’s plenty of human elementalists who aren’t that old so it can’t take that long to learn. I imagine it’s a bit like a lot of real life skills – inventing new spells takes a lot of time, but learning to use ones other people have invented is a lot quicker.

every class makes sense for every race.
for the record, one of the main characters in the game is a sylvari necro.

From the perspective of lore, Danikat is correct. They do emerge with a basic understanding of who they are. From a gameplay perspective, I would recommend playing whichever profession best suits your play style.

I believe there was a Sylvari necro in Ghosts of Ascalon as well.

^ correct.
caithe is a thief, and you meet some warriors and guardians part of the wardens. there are also rangers, since sylvan hounds are an obvious sylvari pet.
but yeah, any class will do. if you look enough, you’ll find one NPC of each class in each race.

Sylvari necromancer in Ghosts of Ascalon was Killeen.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Killeen [Book spoilers]
She was actually questioned in the book about why she practices necromancy. I don’t have the book on me to quote directly, but the gist of it is that death fascinated her since the Sylvari did not have extensive knowledge in that area. So she was mostly studying death, rather than “worshipping” it as necromancy is occasionally depicted.
In Guild Wars 2 scope, necromancers in general are seen to just study “death magic”, rather than it being an art on its own. Asura treat it as just another type of magic.

Dream is sort of like the matix.. sort of . You develope an identity while growing up in dream, living through the collective memory of the sylvari before you and everything the pale tree herself has experienced.

best analogy i’ve seen so far, you just forgot to mention that once you leave that matrix (and you will leave it), you start your life anew, from scratch, and can only remember a few fuzzy details from it.
and you can’t come back, obviously.

Before they are “born” Silvary share a hive mind dream. While no details are retained they “know” things like speaking, reading, etc from all the experiences of all the Silvary before them.

What’s nice about the sylvari is that any profession makes sense for them. They’re curious beings, that don’t mind trying out things completely new to them. So whether you make one Elementalist, Necromancer, Engineer or Guardian or anything else, it’ll make sense.
