Are we ever given a reason why there are some events where we aid Skritt and help them, but most others, we are killing them and smashing their stuff?

It’s for the same reason as why we are killing some asura and helping others, or killing some humans and helping others, or killing some norn and helping others, or killing some charr and helping others, or killing some sylvari and helping others etc.

Some skritt are mean. Some are not. Simple as that, really.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

You notice that the ones we aid aren’t stealing stuff (from us) and making trouble. I don’t think the “bad” Skritt are any different in temperament from the “good” Skritt.

The “bad” Skritt just have goals that conflict with ours and are in the way.

This is not like the Hylek, where different tribes seem to have fundamentally different natures.

Some Hylek tribes appear to be innately more aggressive and territorial than others (with tribes on the red spectrum being more hostile). That isn’t to say they can’t be made into allies though, as some events in Sparkfly Fen prove.

The ones we are friendly with are generally from a large group of skritt while enemies are from smaller groups.

Skritt are kind of a hivemind. Basically they’re dumb in small-medium groups and unable to keep treaties and deals and such with the other races but in a city of skritt they will have enough there to rival Asura in intelligence and have no problem keeping deals with the greater races.

Not necessarily. Off the top of my head I can think of two very small friendly communities in Brisban, one rather large hostile group in Harathi, and a group in Timberline that is half hostile and half friendly. I’m not sure there’s even a correlation there to work with.

Skritt just seem the most random of the friendly/aggressive tribes. Hylek are easily addressed, as are centaurs (Maguuma vs others) and most obviously Inquest Asura. They all have some kind of logic behind their player reaction. Even friendly Skritt have things in their areas that were clearly stolen from elsewhere. Maybe the ones we catch in the act are the evil ones :p

It’s not a big deal or anything I’m just interested in what makes developers in an MMO motivate different temperance amongst similar races. Why is the player interested in helping Skritt kill harpies, but then kill the Skritt in the next map. Or even, why isn’t there a faction of harpy that we are helping somewhere? It would be cool to get insight from the writers as to how this decision process is carried out.

Well, keep in mind that the skritt attack us, not the other way around (the difference between red and yellow mobs). Personally, I always marked it down as any given scratch’s consensus over rather attacking strangers is justifiable for shiny loot, but a degree of territoriality probably also comes into play- they’re comparatively more vulnerable than other races, and I think it’s likely telling that the only region in which there are no friendly skritt is also the only region where the powers that be treat them as vermin.

Either way though, a degree of randomness is to be expected- they’re the only race without the ability to maintain overarching ethical norms, since those would have to be reestablished after every time the community breaks into units too small to comprehend them.

To be fair, I haven’t figured out the logic behind the grawl or ogres aggressiveness, either. I suppose the more southern the ogre tribe, the more likely they are to attack, but that’s hardly logical. The grawl, I guess, is purely based on what their latest totem is, but I start to wonder if the various tribes talk to each other.

As for the skritt, I suppose I can understand why they are so inconsistent. After all, a single skritt can barely function on its own, while a small patch of skritt might rival asuran wisdom. It also depends on what the skritt are trying to salvage. One group of skritt in Metrica Province has them stealing golem parts from the Inquest (which we like), while another is gathering up chaotic waste and stuffing it all together (which we try to convince them not to do). However, when the skritt are trying to steal from our camps, or if their burrowing interferes with local business like that mine in Lornar’s Pass, then we have to kill them. I suppose it all comes down to what the skritt are trying to do.

For the grawl, we have this . Ogres, I think, are just inherently aggressive- they consider pets family, but essentially beat them into compliance, and that doesn’t say good things about how they treat anyone else. All the tribes that are friendly to us are either pushed to the point where they’re struggling to survive, usually due to branded, or, in one case, because the chief owed us for reestablishing his rule. In other words, it only happens in extraordinary circumstances. (Same thing goes with the grawl, but at least there you’ve also got a possibility of a ‘god’ making them play nice.)
