Q:
Might sound like a dumb question but…who named the elder dragons in Tyria?
I mean, it was like that as soon Mordremoth awakened, almost every NPC in the pact learned his name…and I don’t recall him coming to us and say: “Hey guys! My name is Mordremoth!”
The same could be said for the other dragons. The dragons got their own name but how the people of Tyria learned them if the dragons didn’t introduced themselves and aboe that there is very little knowledge about them from the past?

Basically it was never addressed in game. However in a semi-interview article back in July 22nd with an Arena Net Associate Director, Steven Waller it was kind of addressed with this:
“I asked Waller about a jarring detail in Entanglement that left a lot of players confused: How did our characters know Mordremoth’s name well enough to identify the dragon to Kasmeer? Waller said that the player characters have access to the Pact’s information and would have heard about all of the dragons while preparing to combat Zhaitan, but admittedly I found that explanation a little disappointing. Prior to Mordremoth’s reveal at the end of season one of the living world, the dragon’s existence had only been broadly hinted at; even the Durmand Priory seemed to have only vague confirmation that there were six dragons instead of five, and that was one of the biggest lore bombshells uncovered at GW2’s launch. Having Mordremoth’s existence and name assumed to be common knowledge is anticlimactic, although Waller did say that the writing could have better explained how the player character came by that knowledge. “
Mordremoth’s announcement was a mess and was never explained in game. Just the image. They formally apologized for it.
As for the rest. I do not know.

Apparently, the five we know all come from surviving texts in the next rise. As for how they know it… your idea of introductions might be the right one, actually. Lots of the dragon minions capable of speech tend to shout their master’s name, after all, although that might still leave Primordus as an odd lizard out.
Don’t the dragon names come from the text of the human gods or something? I thought that was one of the revlations in Echoes of the Past – there is a text recovered from Orr (scroll of the five true gods or something?) that has the Elder Dragon names on it. All of the known dragons are recorded there but the scroll is incomplete and the final dragon (name starting with “S”, known as he deep sea dragon) is unknown.
That’s one source. I know dwarvern texts have been mentioned as a source in the past as well.

Great point! And to elaborate on this, in the Priory base they stated they found the scroll of the gods? and various other scrolls… Anyways, it says the names of the six elder dragons, however it’s damaged where the DSD’s name is, and only reveals S. It also says their powers, such as Mordremoth being Plant and Mind. But Primordus actually came from dwarven texts in GW1 initially, a couple others may have as well.
Anyways, it’s not clear who named them, but they were named long ago, possibly by the five ancient races, seers, mursaat, forgotten, etc. Or possibly by the gods, or even more likely, possibly by Glint. But they’re VERY old, and one is even potentially lost, calling it bubbles… as we have… well it’s a good candidate for a new name if we never find it :P

I’ve always assumed it was linked to Dwarven texts because of the role of the dwarves in GW1 and in fighting Primordus.
