Arena.net already struggle at providing content for the five existing races.

Sylvaris have the best. Humans inherit from GW1 and benefits the huge amount of players sticking to them. Asuras, Charrs, and Norns needs some love.
We can hope for balance through further content, but we’re only at the beginning of HoT and we could wait 2/3 years before going onto an other dragon.

What about Charr/Human negociations?

What about Norns/Svanirs cohabitation?

After everything that happened in Caudecus’ Manor, did he get in trouble?

What evolutions for Inquest/Flame Legion/Separatists/Svanirs ?
We see them but do not get any insight on their leaders and plans.

How is evolving Human/Centaur war ?

And thousands of others questions !

I’m a lore nerd and I’d take playable Tengu over new lore for existing races any day. Those polar bear dudes would be cool too.

This game is a game, not a book. Gimme more play options and I’ll fill in the lore / RP bits myself.

an all polar bear race- sounds kind of dull with no character diversity other than names like ‘glittering ocean wave’, ‘harrowing sound’ or ‘walks in starlight’ and plus doesn’t wow already have a bear race? but hey go figure!

It’s unclear. There are indications in Nightfall that the Margonites may have massacred the Tyrian Forgotten – with a couple of exceptions – during Nightfall. There’s also (minor spoiler ahead) a set of plinths in Tarir that are a speech to the Exalted by “the Last Forgotten” which really strongly implies that the speaker really is the last Forgotten before the species becomes extinct.

On the other hand, we do still have all of the Forgotten in the Realm of Torment, and it’s possible that the “Last Forgotten” wasn’t aware that a viable population of Forgotten remained in the Mists. On the other hand, it’s possible that what was left in the Realm of Torment wasn’t a viable population and the Forgotten have essentially become like the dwarves (some still around, but the race will never recover without a miracle), or that the Forgotten of the Mists joined the gods on some war somewhere else in the Mists and that finished them off. Either way, I’d love to see more – the Forgotten are one of my favourite pieces of GW lore.

Back on topic, in principle I’d like to see the tengu become playable. In practise, though, I’m not sure at this point I’d play one unless there was a new profession to play as. Getting a character fully developed is becoming an increasingly large investment even when you consider the availability of scrolls and tomes, so I’m not sure about doubling up on characters of the same profession.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Considering how the story is told in Heart of Thorns? Nope.
If they can’t give us substantial lore about the Exalted, the Hylek, and the specialisations, I don’t like the idea of having a new race pop up without a single shred of good story to back it all up.

That would be one of the biggest dissapoint in the whole game.

As much as I want to play as a Tengu, I don’t think it will ever happen. In HoT, the only Tengu we see are hostile and all Tengu in general are distant, story-wise, with no real intention of narrative focus, save the single master crafter in the original PS (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Izu_Steelshrike).

A new race is coming, ANET has hinted at it before during pre release HoT hype, it being Tengu or not is another story entirely but would make sense, Tengu home town/home instance is created and exists, it was scrapped in favor of Sylvari, but assets of it still exist somewhere so they can easily add it as a playable race, just takes time and if ANET finds it worthy to do so/demand high enough.

That is not true. They said something along the lines of: “At this moment the benefits of adding a race do not outweigh the costs of adding a race”. It is a big leap from that statement to a hint at a new race.

it being Tengu or not is another story entirely but would make sense, Tengu home town/home instance is created and exists, it was scrapped in favor of Sylvari, but assets of it still exist somewhere so they can easily add it as a playable race, just takes time and if ANET finds it worthy to do so/demand high enough.

This is also not true. Sylvari were planned to be playable since EotN. There were originally going to be 6 races though; the ones we have now plus the Tengu.

Asura are pretty well responsible for everything ever. They’re used as justification for any bit of technology that might be needed. I’d argue the Charr are in a worse spot, since nobody seems to use their impressive technology outside of the Pact. Large swathes of Season 1 and 2 heavily relied on Asura, whether through their technology or through Asura NPCs. You deal more with Phlunt than you do any other national leader in Season 2.

I agree, however, that the Sylvari have a lot of love. They’re kinda Tyria’s elves.

As for the Norn, they crop up all over the place, but little emphasis is placed on their culture or struggles. They tend to be an excuse to have a big guy speaking rumbly at you. So I’d say Charr and Norn are the ones in need of a little representation, but I also understand that the story right now just happened to focus elsewhere.

What about Charr/Human negociations?

What about them? During the World Summit, it’s implied that Kryta’s still going through it. It’s a long, hard-fought battle to negotiate what they need and Caudecus is clearly still undermining her, as seen in Season 2.

What about Norns/Svanirs cohabitation?

That’s the nature of Norn society and I’m sure it’ll crop up if Jormag ever gets near the spotlight.

After everything that happened in Caudecus’ Manor, did he get in trouble?

He’s kept very close to the Queen for his own “protection”. As a “reward” for “helping rescue” her.

What evolutions for Inquest/Flame Legion/Separatists/Svanirs ?
We see them but do not get any insight on their leaders and plans.

Well we know the leaders and plans for the Inquest and Flame Legion, at least, through the story mode dungeons, though we kinda killed them and/or disrupted their plans heavily. We know that the Inquest thirst for knowledge and burn out talent like a fantasy hypercorporation and that the Flame Legion wants to be back on top of the totem pole. They’re simple motivations that suffice for what are, for now, background elements.

How is evolving Human/Centaur war ?

They’ve been at war since time immemorial. I’m not sure it’s really in a position to evolve overmuch, but it’d be interesting to see if the fall of Fort Salma has any repercussions as far as that conflict goes. I’m sure that might touch on it in Season 3 if there’s any relevant business to do out in Kryta.

I think it’d be interesting to have Tengu since they’re kinda the more seen of all the none player races that have a major city which has been shrouded in mystery and through some idle dialogue between two tengu in Caledon it’s hinted at that they are ordering an asura’s gate in their city (or at least talking about it).

However I think it’d also be neat for the community to also be able to play as centaurs to give more emphasis on them and their relations with the humans especially with the introduction of the peaceful Maguuman centaurs in Dry Top and how they go about their stuff, or even as the mysterious largos who are deep-sea dwellers that we don’t know a whole bunch about and they can take their story into any direction pretty much and maybe even improve upon underwater combat with them.

As for me personally I’d also give an honorable mention to the kodan, hylek and quaggan, but not many people find them interesting/likable.

We asked this at an interview back in 2013. Basically, the death of the Ulgoth put the centaurs on the back hoof, and it was pretty much confirmed that the centaurs were only having the success they were having because of Caudecus playing Palpatine (not in those words, but that was the gist). The centaur forts in Kryta have been holding out, but they’re not threatening to attack Shaemoor any more.

On the other hand… we’ve also been told they can’t go anywhere else. The Maguuma Wastes can’t support their population, and apparently they can’t return north towards the Verdant Cascades region for reasons that have not really been explained, so their survival basically requires either seizing food and arable land from Kryta, or negotiating a peace so they can trade for what they need… and the Modniir at least aren’t willing to talk peace. There used to be a centaur refugee in Lion’s Arch who was forced out for speaking an unpleasant truth – that an alliance between Divinity’s Reach and the Black Citadel would basically spell annihilation for the centaurs if they didn’t sue a peace. I’m not sure where he is at the moment – he was moved to one of the refugee camps during Scarlet’s invasion, but I haven’t seen him since. (To be fair, though, I haven’t actually looked. Maybe when my revenant gets to those areas.)

It’s great that they give that info in interviews, but it’d be great if there was more info laying around the game that gave any real indication to this state of affairs. I tend to fall into the camp of “If it’s not in the game, it doesn’t exist.” except that I also take books into account. This is largely because interviews have been such an unreliable source of information when it comes to what is and is not canon.

I’m pretty sure the Tengu are the strongest contender for a new race at this point – if there ever will be a new race released. Now they’ve got the professions covered with 3 × 3 different armor classes, so a new race in the next full expansion wouldn’t be that far-fetched actually.

I just hope we don’t have to wait another 3 years for that to happen…

My guess is that now that Anet has idea of what they want to do with the game and has various expandable systems in place (such as masteries, raids, guild halls, elite specs) we will see expansions coming out somewhat more often, as in every 2 years or so. That said, in the past year in an interview about HoT Anet has said about races that the amount of gameplay they add is limited and that ‘currently they won’t spent resources on them’ or something. And while I agree that they will probably not add any more professions, they will still add more elite specs.

We’ll see. I’m still hoping for Tengu and I agree that they are by far the most likely contender.

Agreed. I can understand not changing the existing zones just to reflect this, but they’ve had opportunities. For instance, the party in S2C4 could have had some discussion about the state of the war. The role of the Ministry obviously isn’t common knowledge, but there could have been lines like “the centaurs have lost a lot of momentum since the counterattack from Seraph’s Landing, but there are still raids from centaur holdouts in the hills”. Avoids being too spoilery for people who haven’t done the Ulgoth meta, but those who have will know what’s being referred to and that it’s had an effect on the world.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
