Q:
Why is Kessex Hills called like that?
A:
I believe that any suffixes in – sex usually refer to the Saxon lands (example: Wessex = Western Saxon land).
In England, yes. We’re in Tyria, for all we know Kessex meant something in Old Krytan. (Or it’s just a made up word)
Well, what’s now called Kessex Hills was previously (in GW1) Kessex Peak, Tears of the Fallen (now that centaur camp/mudbay digs), and the northern parts of Stingray Strand, and Twin Serpent Lakes (the swamp), with some of the unexplored area.
I don’t think there was any lore given behind the name of Kessex Hills, though we do know that during Thorn’s reign there was a Sorceress of Kessex but we don’t really know anything about her.

Why do we call places Sanctum Cay, or Stingray Strand, or Black Curtain, or Lion’s Arch. We are honestly unlikely to get origins to a lot of names.
I’m pretty sure we do have the origins to the Black Curtain’s name. Something dealing with why Temple of the Ages was built there – if memory serves me correctly, ToA originally began with a shrine to Grenth because the swamp nearby was close to the Underworld or some such; it had dark energies or close to death to Krytans or some other such.

Unless we get an answer from the game designers, it seems likely that it is nothing but a coincidence.
Cheers guys.
Well that’s new to me Konig, lol. All I remember hearing was that the ToA was seen as being a holy location long before the shrines were placed there.
“This temple is as old as Kryta itself. Even before the tribes were united into a single kingdom, it was known to all that these swamps were sacred, a final resting place for the dead. Grenth was the first god to have a statue here, but the others were erected soon after.”

On a quick search, that’s all I found. I think some of the info I remember – if I’m not just misremembering – comes from the Art of Guild Wars (unlike the Factions and Nightfall artbooks, the Prophecies one had some lore put into it – including the Krytan burial rites).
